We all have mental wellbeing. Imagine the possibilities for your life if you knew how to harness your inner resources to support positive mental wellbeing. Would you like to feel less stressed, less anxious, less overwhelmed and more confident, calm and in control of your life? In this episode I asked our Unlocking Possibilities students what their favourite NLP techniques are to support their mental wellbeing. 1. Anchoring is a technique that you can use to harness a powerful resourceful state such as confidence, calm or motivation. We all have off days where we struggle to get motivated, be productive or feel good. NLP states that 'we all have the resources we need or we can create them. Anchoring is a powerful tool for change. 2. Reframing is a way of thinking about things form a different perspective so that you have more choice in how you think, feel and respond to a situation. It's like looking through the world with a different lense and seeing things in a different way, to help you solve problems, navigate challenges, and change the way you behave. 3. Managing your state - Sometimes you might find yourself stuck in anxiety, worry, fear, overwhelm or sadness. NLP shows you how to change your state so you can think, feel and behave in the way that you want to. You get good at what you practice. Practice calm and you will be more calm. Everyone experiences negative thinking right? Perhaps you over think and get caught in looping thoughts that seem to never end. Or perhaps something has happened at work or in your personal life. Did you know that the way you move your eyes gives you information about how you are thinking about and processing your experience? In NLP we call this eye patterns and cues. I like to call it eye clues. Sometimes we get stuck in overthinking with the negative committee shouting loudly and telling you off. Or you might be thinking in pictures imagining a horror movie in your mind of something going terribly wrong, or remembering a past experience that caused you to be upset. You might be stuck in an emotional funk that you struggle to get out of when you’re in it. The good news is that you can change how you are processing information by the way you move your eyes. You can learn to notice what you are doing on the inside that is causing you to feel stuck. With this self awareness you can move your eyes and intentionally create a new internal experience! When you change what you do on the inside, how you experience the world on the outside changes. It’s incredibly empowering knowing that you can change how you feel in an instant. In this episode I explore some of the myths about what NLP is and isn't specifically focussing on the perception that some people might have about it being something that is always about being happy. Life can throw some big curve balls and challenges that can be really difficult to navigate. Sometimes we might feel side swiped by something that happens and it might take us some time to re centre, recalibrate and feel ok again. NLP is not about ignoring difficult emotions and feelings or pretending that you are ok when you are not. It is about helping you to experience all of your emotions, feelings, thoughts and sensations as a human being having a human experience. It supports you in having more CHOICE about how you interpret what happens to you and making decisions about how you respond. You get to choose how you think and feel so that you can respond in a way that supports a healthy and fulfilled life. NLP teaches you self awareness and greater insight into how you operate. When you know how you operate you can change what isn't working for you. In essence NLP teaches you how to enhance states of being that make you feel better and minimise the ones that keep you feeling stuck, powerless and not feeling good. Once you learn to master yourself then you can navigate the challenges of life with more ease and grace and nourish yourself in the process. Want to know more? Join me for part 2 of NLP for teaching In this episode where I talking about the importance of having a mindset of curiosity and seeking to understand the positive intention behind behaviour. Sometimes the quickest way of handling a situation can be to deal with the behavioural response to maintain the equilibrium in the classroom. This might involve sending a young person out or calling for assistance. The long tern effects of this though are that the behaviour is likely to continue or escalate if the cause of the behaviour is not addressed. All human behaviour seeks to take care of a need. So to take care of behaviour, it's important to acknowledge and nurture the need. In this episode I offer some thoughts on what you can do to enhance your teaching, relationships and the experience for your learners through considering some of the presuppositions of NLP. Unlocking Possibilities with NLP
Coaching is essentially about helping people to have more choice. More choice in how they think, more choice in how they feel and more choice in how they behave. One of the ways that you can do this is to offer different frames in which the person can view the world through. Imagine your favourite picture hanging on the wall in a frame. Now imagine changing the frame. The frame changes the picture. This is how coaching works. Give someone a new frame in which to perceive life through, and how they see life changes. The outcome frame in NLP invites you to focus on what you want rather than the problem. The ecology frame invites you to consider the wider consequences that the change might bring and supports you in navigating change successfully. This episode gives you a brief overview of these frames and explores how they can be used in coaching and leadership to support change. Do you have clients who set goals but don't achieve them? Have you exhausted your options as a coach for goal setting and wonder how to support your clients on a deeper level? This is where NLP can really enhance your coaching skills and the transformations for your clients. NLP is a methodology that works with your clients conscious and unconscious mind. All behaviour change takes place first an an unconscious level and is revealed to the conscious when the client is ready. You've heard the saying 'when the student is ready, the teacher appears', right? In goal setting it's important to address the clients beliefs and values as well as the process of achieving the goal. If they have underlying patterns of beliefs that they are not worthy, or they are incapable, or a failure, then it's likely that these beliefs will override the conscious attempt to achieve the goal. Back in 2003 a colleague suggested that I go on NLP training to help with my teaching skills. Many of my classes were very challenging and I wanted skills to help my students with confidence, self esteem and self belief. At the time my own mental health was suffering and I was struggling with being a new parent and I had recently lost my father suddenly. One of the things I am passionate about is helping people to transform their challenges into breakthroughs. Often when we are struggling it can be difficult to find an alternative way of thinking about the situation and we can end up feeling stuck. The thing is that how we perceive our challenges will impact how we respond to them and how we move through them. When you learn to reframe your challenges you can begin to unlock possibilities in how in perceive them, so that you have more emotional freedom and choice in responding to them. We all have those time where we dump our crap on others crap right? You might be tired, overwhelmed, stressed or frustrated and instead of turning inwards to ask your self what you need, it ends up getting dumped on someone else. Taking a look in the mirror and observing ourselves can feel uncomfortable. We all have that shadow side of ourselves that we might not want to look at! So instead what we do is project our inner world out on to others without realising what is happening. When you got the 'tig' (for those of you who have no clue what I am talking about, the tig was someone smacking you on the back to make you stop), you then had to stand like a star and shout stuck in the mud. You would continue to shout stuck in the mud until someone ran past you and gave you another tig (aka smack in the back), to unstuck you! You played it right? So anyway you might be wondering why I am reliving my childhood memories when talking about todays podcast episode. Feeling stuck reminds me of the stuck in the mud game. There I was stood not being able to move until someone else came along and got me unstuck. The truth of the matter is I was FREE to unstuck myself at any time. It was by following the rules of the game that I remained stuck and I could have chosen to make up my own rules if I had wanted to and unstuck myself, rather than waiting for someone to do it for me. Which brings me to todays episode about the unstuck mindset. We often feel stuck in life because of the rules and limitations that we put on ourself. We stay in jobs that we are unhappy with because we believe that we won't be able to do anything else We tell ourselves that we are too old or it's too late to learn new things We don't change our habits because we believe that we will fail We don't go for our dream job or set up in business because we tell ourselves that we are not that kind of person We limit our potential because we tell ourselves that we won't be able to do it We stay waiting for life to happen and hope that something or someone will come along and fix us. I know change can feel hard especially when you feel a lot of pressure bringing in the new year with a new you. Change your life, make 2022 your best year yet. Be more, do more, have more! It can feel a bit overwhelming to say the least and no wonder only 9% of people actually end up achieving the resolutions that they set at the beginning of the year. So how about considering shifting perspective to give you more choice in how you live your life in 2022. When you think differently you open up possibility and choice that you might not have perviously considered. Say for example you are holding a limiting belief about yourself.
