Give us feedback, suggestion or make a request In this episode, I introduce the typical cycle we go through when lose our jobs, clients or suppliers. I also talk about how to get through them and help you realise this too shall pass. I remember it like it was yesterday. After all, who would forget the first time they were fired from a job. It all started with a rather innocent email from my manager at the time and it was scheduled for 4 pm on a Friday. A time and date I would come to learn were pretty usual for having these sort of meetings. It gives you time to cool off, they say or drink the pain away others say. Here I was thinking this was a regular meeting with my manager to talk about the plans for the week, objectives and the regular 1 to 1 not knowing it was about to be a meeting, from hell. It turned out to be a meeting where I'll be told everything I had done wrong. He then proceeded to tell me I was to be let go. Can you leave your work pass and your laptop, as you leave the office? I’m also happy to give you a week off to think it through. I'm thinking to myself, What on earth is that to think through. I've lost a job which I thought was job my dreams, about to have a baby, no source of income. My world was shattered. I got home in a state of shock. Panic even. I couldn't think I was distressed. Little did I know I was at the beginning of the five steps people normally go through when they lose their jobs. It starts with denial. How could this happen to me? Why did this happen to me? I don't deserve this. It was all a dream. Shortly after you go to the next stage called emotional reaction like hysterical laughter and anger. They're all extreme emotions that come out as a way of coping with it - you're thinking, how on earth could they do this to me How dare they? Little did I know I was slipping into the next stage called fantasy. Oh, I'll show them. I'm going to set up a company and completely show them how it's done. I'll get a job at their main rival, make it to the top and laughing in their faces. Then slowly but surely, you go through a dip. It's called a ‘coming to terms’’ or what I like to call ‘acceptance’ stage. This is where you start to realise, You've got no money. You've got no job. You've got no hope and no way of coping or dealing with this. You hit rock bottom and your self-esteem is shot to pieces. It happens to the best of us. Nobody likes to be rejected because let's face it, being made redundant, losing a major supplier, your major contractor or your big customers is rejection. And we tend to take rejections personally - but the beautiful thing about this stage, it's also the is that its the bridge between you being reactive and you starting to be proactive. You start to chart your path forward, you start to think about the steps you need to take to make it back. You start to re-assess yourself, you start to grow your self-confidence and self-reliance, you look at your CV, you shape up your CV give it a nice lick of paints to make it look the business of fit for the market. You understand what the market wants from you so you start to train yourself and get ready. Then you start to apply for jobs. Slowly but surely the calls start coming in. Finally, the interview invitations start coming in. A couple of interviews don’t quite work out but at this stage what you're really doing is just honing your interview muscle (it takes practice) and eventually you there is that one interview, you go in there, you nail every single question and you come out feeling so good and then you get the call that you've got the job. You're back again baby! The truth is nobody wants to lose their jobs. It happens to the best of us. But what we need to remember is, there's a cyc Support the show…

Give us feedback, suggestion or make a request A while ago when I was toying with the idea of getting into writing, coaching and public speaking I remember once asking someone I look up to and admire for feedback. He was very direct and quite frankly speaking negative and this dented my confidence for quite a while. Now, he probably never intended for his feedback to have such an impact on me and I don't tell this story to denigrate him. Rather, I tell this story to shine a light on how much care we need to apply when offering feedback to anyone who does us the honour of asking us for it. Giving the answer or feedback in the wrong way can have a negative impact on the relationship so there is nothing like learning some simple ways to give feedback. The trick is simple and straight forward. It’s called a sandwich. It’s called this because it means you tell them the good things they do well, then the thing you want them to improve and then what they do well. In other words, you tell them the good, the bad and the good. So what does this mean for you, it means that when you are having to provide feedback to anyone and this can range from your friend, family, work or even someone senior to you, you first Tell them what you love about what you are asking and remember to say what you like it as this makes it authentic Tell them what you don’t like and why. Be careful not to make it personal. Keep it focused to the issue Tell them what they did well again to close it out You will find this technique useful for managing friendships and relationships. I know from experience that there are many times I have said the right thing the wrong way and ended up paying for it. It’s also a way to show people how you want to be treated by treating them the same way. Finally, it shows leadership. It shows the ability to inspire, motivate and show people that you truly care about them achieving peak performance. Support the show…
Give us feedback, suggestion or make a request I had a project manager I worked with once. He had his strengths but one I particularly appreciated was his ability to have tough conversations with leadership teams and still come out smelling like roses if you catch my drift. I asked him how he did it and he said, Femi the mistake a lot of people make is they get too caught up in the emotion. If people have to make a decision make it a fact-based discussion. In other words, offer them the facts and then leave it to the Exec team to make the decision. The one thing you have to do is make sure you have always done your best as it pertains to your responsibility as this often moves the conversation away from making a decision to your shortcoming. In these tough times like the ones we are in now, you will have to have discussions with stakeholders. This could be anything from clients or suppliers who owe you or you owe money, people who lead you etc. You will have to give leaders and project sponsors uncomfortable news. You will have to change contracts. You will have to reduce payment terms. You will have to tell supplies you may not be able to meet demand. You may have to tell your boss or someone of influence that what they expected from you, is not possible to deliver anymore. While there is no perfect or easy way to have these conversations, here are some steps you can before and during the meeting · Clearly outline the deliverable and all associated information like time, cost and quality. This could include your own role if required. · Highlight current situation e.g. impact of COVID 19. The key here is to stay away from speculative or emotive comments and stick with the facts. · Outline the options available and the expected outcomes. Be prepared to share your preferred and well-informed choice of action. · Leave the decision to the people with decision-making responsibility while also making clear what is achievable. The last thing we want is more ambitious unachievable targets. The big take away in all of this is to remember, it’s not about emotions it’s just a fact-based conversation that needs an outcome that is best for everyone. It’s about raising awareness of the factors outside your control. It’s always better for all if we all discuss it like grown-ups, understand the impact and then agree on the best way forward rather than leaving things to fester with the inevitable finger-pointing and bad break up where we all lose money and even worse suffer reputational damage. Having tough conversations can be hard. You feel under pressure and are worried about what you will lose. You see this is a genuine feeling but what it does is puts you in a pressure place that you underperform and lose anyway. That’s why a fact-based conversation is important. Support the show…
Give us feedback, suggestion or make a request For a lot of us, life could very well become broken down into 2 parts. Life before COVID 19 and life after COVID 19. What you did before and what you did after and how you transitioned. Watch out that you don't miss out on opportunities that can become either your lifeboats in these crazy times or the gateway into the next phase of your life in your business and career. I probably should take this time to tell a story about something that happened to me recently. Like most of us, I know there is change and I am preparing. One of the things I have been encouraging people to do and I am doing myself is letting as many people know that I am available. If you are in business, let all your customers you are available and can do more. I was speaking to a lady and asking if there was anything I can do for her. She said she has about 5 projects they can use me on but they are all gone now. There is one but its a bit below me and I took that and my pride kicked in that yes, I'm good'. 'Then probably because she liked what I had done to date and wanted to see if she could help she said again ' I have just one and it's a bit below you'. I was about to say thanks when finally she said you can make it what you want then my brain kicked in and I said of course. Most of us have spent so much time, money and energy becoming who and what we are that it has become part of our identity. Becoming focused on who you are and what you have achieved to date can cause you to miss out on opportunities staring you in the face because you can't imagine and as a matter of fact have never imagined doing anything else. The main thing for a lot us is to start having an open mind. Here are some things you can do Short term If you're still employed Find out what your business is doing and what their biggest concern is right now e.g. What problems are they trying to solve Find out how you can get involved or what you can do If you're not employed Be open-minded Don't let what you did get in the way of any opportunities that can come your way. Look for roles similar to what you did in industries that are thriving. Long term Google ' what is the future of.......'. This should give you a broad idea of the ideas out there. Some will go from realistic to absolute bat crazy. Ask yourself, can I see myself doing this? Am I ready for this? Do I have what it takes to play my part Read, read and read some more so you can learn. Don't be afraid. As long as you plan and are ready to learn there is a place for you in the future Support the show…
Give us feedback, suggestion or make a request I had a couple of conversations with a couple of friends this week. The first friend tells me; he has had two interviews A couple of days I have been speaking to lots of people and we got to speaking about the Coronavirus and its impact and I have had two completely different conversations. On the one hand, one person says..projects are about to be closed down and everybody is nervous about what happens next. The other person says he has had 4 interviews. I repeat 4 interviews in the past week. In every crisis, there are winners and losers. Some people will make money and some will lose money. Some people will use this as an opportunity to rise while others dont. What are you going to do to survive? Are you caught up in the news and losing sight of the fact that this chaos and complete turning of the table also means that you need to be ready to adapt. You have to be fit for the future and present. COVID 19 has now changed the way some of us work now for a couple of weeks. While the shock hasn't worn off and the loss of life will never stop being a shock for us. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who are suffering. The sad reality is that businesses will now start to focus on how to continue to do what they were created for - exist to create wealth. They create wealth through their employees and suppliers and that is where you come in. Whether you like it or not, things will never be quite the same again. This is the tipping point. For a lot of us, this change would have happened gradually and we would have been caught out. Bob Proctor the leading thinker and speaker on personal development said we don't resist change. We resist being changed. What this means for most of we don't resist the change cos it happens anyway. Rather we just refuse to do what we need to adapt. In Charles Darwin's Evolution of the Species, he talks about the survival of the fittest. Are you fit? Will you survive? We have to adapt of risk being left behind. A relic of a by-gone era. We could end up holding onto our polaroid camera while the world uses an iPhone. Will you adapt to the workplace or will you get your head in the game and do what you need to to survive. I'll tell you who is doing anything they can to survive. Smart companies and businesses. They are very quickly upgrading their systems. Redesigning their processes and the way they work. What about your business owner. You the employee. Are you upgrading yourself? Are you upgrading the tools you use? Are you looking at things differently? Knowledge is power. I have done the research and I'm going to be sharing with you what the businesses will be focusing on so you have the inside scoop and are ready. Now let's talk about Survival. I'm going to share some tips on how to survive in this period where the question every boss is asking is ' what does this man/woman do around here'? Why am I paying them all that money? Be a salesman Don't get too stuck on who you are focus on what problem you can solve Be ready to go looking for problems to solve Be ready to be whatever they need you to be Be ready to work on short terms and realise it's about surviving. Your contract as a business or employee won't be what keep's you. It is your ability to make them feel you are worth the money Every comms or speech you make, be sure to highlight the problem you have solved or will solve and what it has saved the business Offer yourself up for everything going Support the show…

They create wealth through their employees and suppliers and that is where you come in. Whether you like it or not, things will never be quite the same again. Malcolm Gladwell in his book the tipping point talks about a point when things that have been a while coming finally reach that point of mass adoption. The fact is online ordering has always been there. Meetings online have always been there. Working from home has always been there. Running a complete organisation online profitably has always been there. The difference is that businesses now know that it can be done at scale with the whole company. A digital and technological driven economy and company also means a more efficient company where there is no where to hide and you have to add value. Knowledge is power. I have done the research and I'm going to be sharing with you what the businesses will be focusing on so you have the inside scoop and are ready. I spoke a lot about expectations in my very first podcast and never has it been so true. In these times when businesses are keeping an eye on costs, this is not a time to be wasting time on the wrong thing. This is the time to get it right. Here is my tip to you in any web conference call or engagement with suppliers or customers or colleagues Be clear on what you want to say. Practice it in your head. There is no benefit of body language for someone to read. People will switch off if you don’t have anything of value to say. Keep it short and sweet. At the end of every meeting or phone call - play back what you have been asked to do OR what you are asking them to do. Make sure you are clear you understand and they are agree. Feel free to email them or talk to them privately to confirm Role and responsibility - these are fluid times. If you need to have a chat with your boss to confirm what is their highest priority then do it. This is a time to maintain closeness not to be distant Transparency - Make sure you find a way to let everyone know what you are working on. Let everyone know how you are progressing. Let everyone know your challenges and risks. This is not a time to hide but a time to risk and shine. Your Voice - You have to learn to speak with authority on the call. Give us feedback, suggestion or make a request Your ability to react to the dramas of life. Fears, the ups, the downs, the scary news on TV is all dependent on perspective. Manage your perspective, you manage your emotions and you manage to have a healthy well balanced life. As I look back over my life realise that for better or worse, I dont get too hung up with wins and losses. Now I use the word for better or worse because it can be a weakness and strength. A weakness because it means I don't get the benefit of feeling the pain enough to learn sometimes but a strength because it means I dont can move on pretty quickly and stay on an even keel. Whenever I lose a client or a job my view was always that 'some say you're fired, I say I'm up for a change of environment and pay rise' This is all about perspective. Your perspective is the way you see things. Your ability to react to the dramas of life. Fears, the ups, the downs, the scary news on TV is all dependent on perspective. Manage your perspective, you manage your emotions and you manage to have a healthy well balanced life. We are living in strange times. We are living in scary and frightening times with news of death on TV increasing literally by the day the tune of hundreds. We are seeing our way of living challenged. We are seeing economies and governments we have always been able to rely on as bastions of stability shaken to the very core. We fear for ourselves, our families and the our individual and collective freedoms. These times lead to fear. They lead to panic. They lead to emotional upheaval. They lead to a loss of peace of mind which can lead to a depressed state and negative outlook and before you know it you are in a negative spiral and a hopelessness that just drains you of energy and creativity. Creativity that brings about energy. Energy that brings about activity and activity that brings hope. This brings me back to that word we lack and can all do with a little bit of...perspective. You see, perspective is all about how you choose to see the world and what happens to you. Perspective isn't about ignoring the world around you. Its about reframing it. You see, a half glass cup is also a half full up. Both can be true. So how do we change our perspective for the better Gain an understanding of what exactly is happening around you. To understand what is happening around you does a number of things but most importantly it allows you to see things for what they are and not live in denial. It also allows you to understand what others are going through. Process what is happening to you and to others. Put yourself in their shoes and empathise with them. If its you, its happening to, then deeply understand what has happened to you. I find stats useful in this case - if you can find them. They help you bring objectivity to the situation and Be thankful for your situation and understand this. There is always someone who wants what you have. The very life you live, someone out there is praying for it. The fact that you can listen to this podcast means you are alive and so you are better than the dead because you have life and when you have life, you have hope and hope is all we need because that means we have a shot at something better Flip the script. What is beauty can come out of these ashes. What is the glass half full scenario? What are the opportunities that are available to you out of this situation. A chance to redefine yourself? A chance to develop? A chance to change career? A chance for a blank slate? Remember! Whatever you focus on increases. When you focus on sorrow, you get sadder. When you focus on joy, you become infectiously joyous. When y Support the show…

Give us feedback, suggestion or make a request Some people enter our lives and leave almost instantly. Others stay and forge such an impression on our hearts and soul such that we are changed forever. When you are in a relationship you are either in a positive spiral or a negative spiral. That means you are either in a positive place or negative place. Your ability to check yourself, review the relationship and understand where its going wrong or well makes all difference. A healthy relationship after all is a wealthy relationship. In this podcast, understand some simple strategies that ensure you enjoy outstanding relationships in both your personal and professional life. Relationships can be fragile. It doesnt take much for them to go wrong and they can go wrong in a hurry. Usually, it start with what seems like an innocent act by one party, the other retaliates and then one thing leads to another and before anyone knows like snow breaking off a mountain top its an avalanche which is almost impossible to stop. What causes relationships that started so well and held so much promise to fall apart? Its helpful to look at your life and career as a spiral. Sometimes you are on an upward spiral and sometimes you are on a downward spiral. When things are going well with your colleagues, people you lead, your personal relationships, confidence is high and life is rewarding then your relationships are healthy and flourishing. The opposite of this is the downward spiral. This is when things start to go wrong. A lack of communication occurs, stress increases and life becomes a constant struggle. Relationships are polarised during the downward struggle. Lets look at how a downward struggle looks in real life. You fail to deliver a report at work to the quality your manager expects. Your manager presents it to his manager and he gets told off for the poor quality. Your manager resents you but doesn't open up. You don't address it either by apologising. Communication breaks down and you both become defensive. You start communicating by email and the relationship lacks warmth. It descends until you can't work together. Here is another one - you are in business. A customer buys a product and gives you some hard feedback. You don't address it and understand their concerns. The customer feels unappreciated. The orders start to reduce. The one day it stops. Another which is perhaps the most common - marriage. Husband is very busy and works later and leaves early. Money is tough. Communication becomes brief chats and the tension rises. You both find your release in other things. You separate briefly it spirals into a final separation. When you carefully reflect on what causes relationships in work and life to fall apart you can take steps to fix them and even if you can't fix them you are able to prevent it from happening next time. Awareness is always the first step to progress. You can use this spiral technique to review all your relationships and for those that are going well observe the things you are doing to keep it going and those that are not where it all started to go wrong. Give us feedback, suggestion or make a request Q - How is education important? My mother lived a life of purpose to help impoverished women through micro-financing Confidence that if you apply yourself you will succeed Q- You create an environment it was okay to fail Yes - as long as you learn from it. Most things worth doing are hard - if it was it would have been done I tell my daughters adults dont know what they are doing - its amazing anything works but when we work as a team we cover each other. Create an environment where everybody could constructively add to the discussion but we also did this when we succeeded The success of Bin Laden raid was 6months in planning. We tested everything could go wrong up to if something goes wrong. Nobody could have done that on their own In that situation with so many people with advise. Did they agree and how did you manage that? As president, the only thing that comes to your desk is stuff that can't be fixed. Smart people have tried and it can't be done. So we work of probability.e.g. Car auto industry . We decided to help all even though poll disagreed we should help. I heard all the views and did it. It was right decision even though it could have turned out wrong Business fail because of fear of good feedback etc. Have a structure. One thing I did There is usually an outer ring in the situations rooms. They did the work The generals sit in middle and start speaking I started calling on the people in the outer circle even though I didnt know their names. They'd get nervous but it transmitted to them to be on their toes, I appreciate their values and their principals to listen to them It doesnt meet you'll always get it right but you'll be in best position to get it right Lets talk about jobs. As one of the youngest presidents in history. How did you prepare? Its like building a startup Make decisions based on imperfect decisions Market it Have a thick skin Not watch cable news What prepared me best was the prinicples in me over 30/40yrs I have the ability to focus on a thing to its conclusion. You dont develop it in a week The thing in presidency is not the specifics, its the habits of performance. One thing I found useful was being able to take the long view. Not get too high or too low I didn't buy the hype I didnt get too low when people called me a bum when the auto crisis. You dont find this in a manual or in your religious faith. You still have to know what you are doing Organisations know how to train to do the skills. Its tapping into their hearts is the hard thing Change was always a theme. How did you do it? For me, I cant change till I recognise there is something wrong with me I was a smoker for a long time. It drove Michelle nuts and she said why is someone smart smoking and it bothered her. The truth is it didnt bother me. I wasn't feeling the impact. The reason I quit was because i never smoked in the house. My daughters got old enough to smell it and ask. I had to either lie or confess I was a smoker. So I either pass on a bad habit, lie or quit. Support the show…
Give us feedback, suggestion or make a request Today I would like to follow up on the previous epsiode where we started talking about expectations. Now remember! Expectations is about letting people know what you intend to give them and agreeing in advance. This allows both sides to know what they are getting. This week I'm going to be talking about 'Making your pay match your expectations'. I can just see it. A lot of you nodding your head to say I know what you mean. Tell me more. So settle down and listen up. A few years ago I decided to make the move from staff or what some would call permanent employee to contracting or consulting. I was relatively young in the field but I was confident , brash and had worked for a few global businesses so that gave me the belief I could do anything. I had also heard that a few other people had been earning big bucks in my field and I considered myself on par with these guys if not better so why shouldn't I be paid. A couple of days after starting a new contract I had started to get frustrated with the talk coming from people around me saying I earn this and I earn that and I was determined that I would learn the secret or find out to get what I thought I deserved. A few days after I started someone else who was I must say a lot older joined the team and I guess he liked me a lot and we got to talking. I then I asked him the question ..how do I get to become like the people that earn big bucks'. He took a long look at me and with the wisdom of someone who had been there, done that and got the T-shirt he said...Femi let the money chase you. I looked at him confused and he could see I didn't get it and he then said..focus on providing great service and the money will chase you. It made a lot of sense at the time but its only many years later with hindsight and the benefit of experience and the confidence that comes from knowing what I know can I say I get it. Looking back at my overall experience at that particular job I realise I was so still inexperienced and its no wonder it ended with me leaving a bit earlier than I would have liked but it was certainly a bruising experience. Here is a few lessons I want you to take away DO NOT compare yourself with others like I did. You dont know the price they have paid, their experience, their journey and where they are going. It's good to know what is possible but dont use that as a barometer for yourself. I looked at these people and expected the same. Focus on honing your craft and learning your skills. Treat every experience good or bad as building you up to the next phase. The reality is we all leave this earth - I hate to break it to you so we will do well to just enjoy the beautiful hustle or struggle. Each day is new and treat each task as an opportunity to learn and not an obligation or something anyone is making you do. Do this and you start to boss the situation Back to my old friends advice. Treat all your customers (anyone you are providing a service) like you want to be treated. Listen, understand what they want, find out what good looks like and do your best to get as close to that. Keep doing that and your resume grows and one day you will be master of all you survey and the money will be chasing you. Your resume is one of you biggest negotiation tools. You can see what I have done. You need what I know. Let's talk I love this saying that it takes years to become an overnight success and the same should apply to us. Trust the process is a popular saying in sports when you are putting in the work and not yet seeing the fruits of your hardwork. So whatever you are doing f Support the show…

Give us feedback, suggestion or make a request Many years ago I got a job as a Analyst in a some tech company. Looking back I still dont know how it happened but short of the story I was a bit too click happy with my mouse and just applied for all jobs with the word Analyst in the title. So imagine my surprise when I got called back for a role as a Strategy Analyst which for those who know is a lot to do with spreadsheets and calculations. Now I must have done pretty well cos I got offered the role. Now this is where is turned bad. They wanted a wiz at Excel and got a dude who just knew the basics. In a couple of weeks I had the CEO asking me for top level work and I couldn't do it. A few months later I was on the street. I tell that sad story because it leads nicely into this session where we'll be talking about expectation. Now in my experience, the singular reason for most of us suffering disappointment in relationships, work and where we have deal with others is unmet expectations. Expectation also tends to be closely linked to its lovely cousin called communication. Here's how it works. If I don't know what exactly you are going to give me, and you dont know what exactly what I want you to give me, it stands to reason that somewhere along the line one or both of us is going to be dissatisfied. The sequence is me; the receiver is probably to first to complain, then you who believe and probably in all likelihood did a good job think I don't appreciate what you've done and we end up in conflict because we didnt agree to the right level in the first place. It's all about managing expectations. That's the big word today - expectations. Managing relationships is critical in relationships, workplace, business, everywhere. I want to talk those going into work today , getting in agreements, agreeing work with the managers about how to do this. It's a simple 3 step process. Your customer (and it doesn't hurt you to start bringing the customer mindset to everybody you engage with) asks you for something. Your manager, your spouse, your friend. Take time to think about it clearly to make sure you understand. Now play it back to them stating clearly what they want, when they want it and how they want it - and here is the key - they have to say Yes that's what I mean. Until you get that Yes you dont have a clear agreement and both of you are making assumptions that the other gets it. Now why do expectations go wrong. Most of us are shaped by our world experiences and our perspectives which are unique to us. This carries into the workplace where we assume previous experiences whether good or bad apply to the new situation and we make decisions. We forget that most things are subjective so ones man meat could possibly be another mans poison. I get in some case in the world of science its data driven and 0 is 0 but in most things we need to work through our assumptions and come to a common ground. Remember have a view on what quality is or what good looks like. The glue that holds all this together though is the sign off. The agreement. Whether its from your spouse, friend, business partner etc. The phrase is good to use 'just to be clear. You want X Y Z at this time and in this way. This all sounds formal but trust me it works. In the work place yes it is but out of work it doesnt have to be. It's just a simple 'hey I will do this at this time, and in this way. That cool? Looking back at my time in the tech company I should have straight off the bat said , I'm a rookie, I'll learn , work long hours and my work will be a bit rough at first but we'll get there at which time they could have said yes or no and saved us all or the heartache.
