Have you ever noticed that when you feel overwhelmed, you stop taking care of yourself the way you should be? Then, because you aren’t taking care of yourself very well, you don’t feel your best and start slacking off which, in turn, puts more pressure on you because your responsibilities and to-do list starts piling up, causing you to feel even more overwhelmed? And since you feel overwhelmed, you stay in that rut. This is a nasty cycle I get in to and it’s tough to pull out of it! When you feel this way, you might ask “what can I do?” Today I want to share five simple health habits that I personally like to focus on when I start feeling overwhelmed. These simple habits always help me pull myself out of that rut so I can start feeling better. My husband and I recently went on a vacation to the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. We started in Oregon and worked our way up to the North Cascades area in Washington. Have you thought about a budget routine and wondered whether it would be helpful or more stressful? In our first years of marriage, my husband and I had been introduced to budgeting and had several people in our lives following Dave Ramsey’s 7 Baby Steps program to get out of debt. I always rejected the idea thinking that we didn’t have enough money to budget, it would be too restrictive, and it would cause more stress trying to keep it organized. And my husband felt the same way. We avoided it until our finances had become so stressful that my husband came to me one day, after years and years of struggling, and said, “I think we need to try it.” And for some reason, all my worries went away and I agreed to try. We started budgeting in March 2018, very much in debt, but ready to dig ourselves out and try to grab hold of that financial freedom we were hearing about. If you find that you clean your home and it immediately starts getting messy afterwards, you’re going to feel like it’s an endless divide of clean versus messy with no in-between. You will feel like you either need to be constantly cleaning in order for your home to feel presentable or you must simply accept living in a pigsty. But it doesn’t have to be one or the other. We can actually create small intentional habits (that also take minimal time) to keep our homes tidy throughout the day without too much effort. I know it feels like an odd time of year to be thinking about Christmas and all the expenses that can come along it. Do you ever feel so busy you can’t hardly think straight? When we prioritize the time to stop and ask ourselves the right questions, we can begin to recognize where we need to make changes. And when we start making those changes, we can stop feeling overwhelmed and start feeling more relaxed and prepared. One of the most frustrating things when budgeting is getting your plan for the month all set up and then an unexpected expense comes out of left field and throws the whole thing off. When we started budgeting years ago, this happened often. We weren’t sure how to handle it at first, but over time, we tested different things and eventually found something that worked well for us and we still do it to this day. It seems like we are living in a world where the attention span for most of us continues to decline. When we are feeling overwhelmed with tasks, this lessened attention span makes it especially important to create “focus time” so that we can really dive into the task at hand with less distractions. Focus time blocks helps us be more productive, reduces mental strain, and at the same time helps give us time back in our days! While we can have the best of intentions for our focus time, in reality, it’s inevitable that we will eventually get interrupted. It might be a phone call or text notification, your kiddos might need you, or a colleague pops into your office. When you get interrupted, it can be really hard to get back on track unless you have a plan. So in this episode, let’s talk using focus time AND how to refocus when you’re thrown off course.
