When faced with stressful situations, your body responds by entering into fight-or-flight mode, a natural protective mechanism. This mode activates your sympathetic nervous system, triggering an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, muscle constriction, and a temporary halt in digestion. These physiological changes are intended to prepare you to either confront the threat or escape from it.
