In this week’s episode, Hannah and Ali talk all things Intuitive Eating Principle #9: Movement- Feel the Difference. Exercise can many times go hand in hand with diet culture so when learning how to reconnect to food and start to trust your body, it can get confusing deciding if, when or how to start to exercise. On this week’s episode Hannah and Ali are joined by certified personal trainer Julie Newbry. Julie is passionate about helping her clients use exercise as a form of self-care rather than punishment while focusing on health promoting behaviors rather than weight or aesthetics so she was the perfect person to answer all your listener questions on incorporating movement while recovering from diet culture. As I am exercising more I have been noticing more binge urges and behaviors- do I have to give up exercise that I actually enjoy and which has been helping my mental health infinitely, or do I carry on while consciously ignoring the disordered voices in my head until they go away? Is it wrong to like the changes to my body and attention I am getting as I feel more toned and fit? Is it counterproductive to Intuitive Eating to feel like I need to force myself to exercise? Is it okay to not listen to your intuition when it comes to exercise, especially if it means you’ll give up exercise forever? Is it okay for exercise to be taking up a lot of my time and energy if it’s helping me get stronger and healthier (vs thinner and more focused on the number of the scale)? Is it okay for exercise to be a huge part of my life and identity? When it comes to exercise, diet culture gives a lot rules and “shoulds” which can make choices feel anything but intuitive. In this week’s episode, Hannah and Ali talk all things Intuitive Eating principle #8: Respect Your Body. To cover this complex topic they are joined by registered dietitian and eating disorders specialist Christyna Johnson. Christyna practices from a person-centered perspective with a social justice lens to help dismantle diet culture which made her the perfect expert to help answer all your questions about respecting your body. How do you overcome the desire to lose weight and be thin, when that’s considered to be more desirable in our society? Can people who fall outside of the thin, white ideal benefit from Intuitive Eating? My body is changing as I work through Intuitive Eating and recovery from binge eating- how do I acknowledge where my body is at and shift away from weight loss as a goal? Is this extra weight I’ve gained as I work on the IE principles really what my body needs, or just a result of overindulging in play food? How do I liberate myself from the negative body image I’ve developed from thirty years of exposure to diet culture? How can I develop a loving attitude towards my body, whatever its shape, when I’ve been conditioned to hate every speck of cellulite I see? Coming to a place of neutral respect for your body is a key aspect in healing from diet culture but it can be complicated especially when the idea of loving your body feels far away. Learning to validate and cope with your emotions can be a very important step in the process of Intuitive Eating which is why Mimi Cole was the perfect guest for this week’s episode. Mimi is a 2nd year graduate student in the Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counselling program at The University of North Carolina and co-host of The Lovely Becoming podcast. On her podcast, Mimi interviews mental health and eating disorders practitioners from all over to discuss topics related to Intuitive Eating, systems of oppression, anti-fat bias and much more so there was no question Hannah and Ali had to have her on this episode to answer all your questions about emotional eating and coping with your feelings. How can I just rely on physical hunger to guide my food choices? How do you break the vicious cycle of emotional eating? Is it wrong to eat for boredom? Is it ever okay to eat for emotions? In this week’s episode, Hannah and Ali talk all things Intuitive Eating principle #6: Feel Your Fullness. They are joined once again by Certified Body Trust provider and registered dietitian Aaron Flores. Aaron joined Hannah and Ali last season on one of their most popular episodes about body trust so they knew they had to have him back again. Aaron has worked in eating disorders in a variety of settings with a focus on Intuitive Eating and Health at Every Size where he helps individuals make peace with food and develop body-positive behaviors so there was no better topic to bring him back for then answering all your listener questions on fullness. Does fullness lead to weight gain? Is it okay to feel fullness? How do I stop the guilt and shame I feel with fullness? What does fullness actually feel like?
