Vicki Sokolik refuses to be an Ostrich. Her son brought to her attention the crisis of unhoused youth — youth unhoused, not living with a parent/guardian, and not in foster care — in America, and she has been fighting to support this vulnerable population every since. She is also the author of the new book, “If You See Them: Young, Unhoused, and Alone in America.” Vicki Sokolik joined host Jay Ruderman to discuss the many ways unhoused youth fall through the cracks in our society, how her organization helps them, and also how to build trust with people who could use your help. Being in a toxic relationship is painful but even more painful is trying to free yourself from the relationship and move on with your life. Telling your friends and family about the relationship can be helpful until they begin to question why you are still in the relationship. They have heard you speak of the lying, the cheating, the screaming, and anything else that has taken place that is less than healthy and wonder why you are still exposing yourself to the situation. If you’re in one of these types of relationships that began with intense love bombing, you have seen the best of the relationship and afterwards how things augment. Whether you are dealing with full on manipulation, gaslighting, lying, cheating, and more, this podcast will help you to hear a true life situation and how this person is mentally and emotionally working to overcome a relationship that has taken over his life. Are you the black sheep or the golden child of your family? Your role within the family can significantly shape your experiences and relationships. What parental dynamics led to this structure? As we age, how does this dynamic change? As young children, we often don’t realize whether we are the golden child or the black sheep, but over time, the division between siblings grows, along with feelings of resentment. The parents create this division to make them look better in front of others, bragging about the golden child's accolades. Join me as I discuss the lasting impacts of being labeled the black sheep or the golden child and how painful this can be, especially for those stuck in between, as well as what happens when the black sheep becomes more successful than the golden child. Our thoughts often revolve around where we are, what we're facing, and the uncertainties of the future. We may wonder what will happen to us, our friends, or our aging parents. Fear of the unknown can creep in, especially if we're an only child or only responsible adult child with all of these responsibilities. It can feel overwhelming. How do we navigate these challenges? How do we process and respond to them? There are no right or wrong answers, there are no directions. We’re all just trying to figure it out as we go, hoping for the best. In today’s show, I want to discuss how we process these situations, compartmentalize our emotions, and move forward when a parent, family member, or friend isn’t listening to us or considering our thoughts and opinions. What can we do to put things back into perspective when we are trying to help our aging parents, family members, or friends and they don’t want to take our advice? We need to learn to be okay with that. We can offer guidance and support but can't force anyone to see things our way. Love bombing and real love are two completely different things. The scariest part of being love bombed is that most of us don't know we're being love bombed. On this episode of the podcast, I’ll address what is love bombing, the phases of love bombing, the signs and symptoms of being a victim of love bombing, the relationship patterns of a love bomber, and why we fall into the trap of believing this is true love and a perfect relationship. In the beginning, of a relationship that begins with love bombing, we believe we have found the ultimate relationship. We get caught up in the whirlwind of the “romance,” believing we have found the love that is only seen in romantic films. I want to help you to identify love bombing before you get extremely hurt mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Listen through to the end of this podcast episode to properly educate and self-guard yourself from emotional pain and suffering. When we are raised in an environment with a parent who has the signs and symptoms of BPD, we do not realize the impact that it has on our daily lives. As children, we often had no idea what was going on with mom or dad. One minute everything seemed great and the next minute it felt as though we were living amid an emotional roller coaster. It was always confusing, wondering which version of them we would get on any particular day. As children, this is a very difficult situation to live with, no one explained to us what was going on. In the process, it felt like we had lost our childhood to their emotions, constantly trying to change into what we thought they wanted us to be. On today’s show, I am going to talk about what it is like to be raised by a parent who has signs and symptoms of BPD. What it is like to deal with this as an adult. What does it do to us, how does it affect us, and our choices based on these situations?
