Jen Wilkin, JT English, and Kyle Worley continue their discussion of Acts, beginning a journey with Paul and Barnabas as they head to Jerusalem.

Questions Covered in This Episode:

  • Why are we studying Acts and what did we find in the first 13 chapters?
  • Who are Paul and Barnabas?
  • How’d they link up? Is this a John Lennon/Paul McCartney kind of collaboration?
  • They encounter resistance to their message, don’t they?
  • What were they doing?
  • Why keep telling the same story over and over again?
  • In Acts 14:8-18, we get a fascinating encounter, where they are mistaken for gods...
  • Was Paul a pastor?
  • In Acts 15, we encounter a resistant voice to what is happening in the gentiles: What’s the best reading of the Jewish concern here?
  • Peter has a moment here, doesn’t he?
  • At the end of Acts 15, Paul and Barnabas break up?!?

Helpful Definitions:

  • Presbyteros: Greek term for elder.

On episode 68, Jen Wilkin, JT English, and Kyle Worley continue talking about the Apostles' Creed. They talk about what "sin" and "forgiveness" mean.

Questions Covered in This Episode:

  • Why are we looking at the creed? What is the creed? When is the creed? Why does it matter for us?
  • Today turning our attention to: “the forgiveness of sins.” Is it significant that this line is here?
  • What is sin? Is there a difference between sin and sins?
  • What is original sin? Total depravity?
  • How has sin impacted me, us, the world?
  • What is forgiveness?
  • How can I be forgiven? How am I forgiven?

The Apostles’ Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

creator of heaven and earth,

I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit

and born of the virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

He descended to hell.

The third day He rose again from the dead.

He ascended to heaven

and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

From there He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

Helpful Definitions:

  • Sin: “Sin is lawlessness in relation to God as lawgiver, rebellion in relation to God as rightful ruler, missing the mark in relation to God as our designer, guilt in relation to God as judge, and unclean in relation to God as the holy one. Sin is perversity touching each one of us everywhere and at every point of our lives.” J.I. Packer
  • Original Sin: The state of all people at birth that consists of impending consequence for guilt and disordered desires that infect every aspect of human nature so that no one is able to reorient one’s self from this inward curve.
  • Federal Headship: Represented by one person; either by Adam or by Christ.
  • Total Depravity: By nature, we have disordered loves: we do not love that which we ought to love. Attempting to change the telos, or end goal of humanity from the Kingdom of God to the Kingdom of Man.
