Episode 42-Back to School: Bullying, Mindset and Success
Manage episode 435297074 series 3525975
Today on Embracing Your Season, Paige shares a message with parents as they enter the chaotic season of back-to-school. With encouragement and actionable items to equip your kids, this episode is the boost your family needs as they enter a new school season.
Paige’s Takeaways:
Teach your kids that words DO hurt.
- Words do have power and they can shape our identity. We can equip our kids to choose what words have power over them.
- When your kids are hurt or upset about something that was said to them or about them - validate their feelings.
- Help your kids be critical about what they hear and receive. Ask them “Do you think that’s true?”. This is where we can empower our kids to own or discard things they hear.
Combat bullying by helping your kids find community
- If they aren’t finding friends at school, create opportunities for them to connect with kids at a youth group, 4H, sports program, with family members, etc. Their community doesn’t have to revolve around school - and when they have solid friends who speak into their character outside of school, they’ll feel more confident inside of school.
Parents: Filter what your child says
- When kids relay a story, they don’t necessarily intentionally lie, but they do tend to exaggerate. They view the world through a lens of BIG emotions. Make sure to validate the way they feel, but ask more questions so you can learn more about the actual reality of the situation. Once you have more data, you can walk alongside your child to navigate the circumstances.
Growth Mindset
- We need to have the perspective that we aren’t going to know things off the bat! If your kid comes home frustrated that they don’t get a new math formula, encourage them that learning takes time - and that’s the case outside of school, too.
- We can do hard things! They have to build up their resilience to get to where they can stay consistent, and engaged, and ultimately lead to success.
- School is going to be boring sometimes. But boredom is necessary in order to continue working hard. Help your kids understand that putting in the effort (and knowing that it won’t always be easy or fun!) will lead to success and accomplishment - something we get to feel proud of throughout our lives.
