EPISODE & DATE:
Episode 3 - published on January 5th 2024

KEY CONSIDERATIONS:
In this episode we look at these three key communication terms:

  1. Conversational Narcissism: This is when someone dominates the conversation, constantly steering it back to their own experiences, their own thoughts, own opinions, often overlooking other people’s input.

  2. Active Listening: The opposite of narcissism in conversation. It's about being fully present and engaged, showing genuine interest and empathy in what the other person is saying.

  3. Dialogue vs. Monologue: Dialogue is a two-way street, with active participation and balanced exchange between both parties. In contrast, a monologue is a one-sided affair, often dominated by one speaker and similar to conversational narcissism.

SHIFT/SUPPORT RESPONSE:
We deep dive into the Shift/Support response, an essential framework to help you succeed at listening and in conversations.

Shift Response: occurs when the conversation is redirected towards your own experiences or views, thereby shifting focus away from the original speaker. It's about bringing the spotlight to yourself.

Support Response: in contrast, involves responses that keep the focus on the speaker. It's characterized by empathy, listening and a genuine interest in understanding the other person's perspective.
