The War and Treaty’s Michael and Tanya Trotter grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and Washington, DC, respectively, but both have family roots in the South. They also grew up in the musical traditions of their churches – Tanya in the Black Baptist Church and Michael in the Seventh Day Adventist Church – where they learned the power of song to move people. After becoming a father at a very young age, Michael eventually joined the armed forces and served in Iraq and Germany, where he took up songwriting as a way of dealing with his experiences there. Meanwhile Tanya embarked on a singing and acting career after a breakthrough appearance in Sister Act 2 alongside Whoopi Goldberg and Lauryn Hill. Now, after a long and sometimes traumatic journey, Michael and Tanya are married, touring, winning all sorts of awards, and set to release their fifth album together, and their fourth as The War and Treaty. Sid talks to Michael and Tanya about the new record, Plus One , as well as their collaboration with Miranda Lambert, what it was like to record at FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, and how they’re blending country, soul, gospel, and R&B. ×"Whether it's the stress of a physical illness or the stress of emotional stuff or the stress of moving, it's all going in the same bucket from our body's perspective. I was pouring more and more in there when what I needed was to get a bigger bucket and take some stuff out." - Becca Benning Becca Benning has multiple chronic conditions, but it was her multiple sclerosis diagnosis that made her dive into Terry Wahls' research and the autoimmune protocol diet to find what would ease her symptoms. What Becca found made such a difference in her own health, she started helping other people living with an autoimmune condition (diagnosed or not) work thought the autoimmune protocol. Discussed in this episode: Wanting better health vs. vitality. The surprising change she found when going gluten-free. Why working with where a person is currently is more important than strictly following a diet. ”Your words can either heal or hurt. Don't you ever be the prick.” Blaze Hunter is an author, award winning speaker, brand specialist, and maybe most importantly, a communications expert. In this episode, Blaise discusses the connection between emotions and the body, and how it plays a role in autoimmune disease. Blaise was diagnosed in her 20’s with EGPA, a rare autoimmune disease that affects the lungs. At the time she was working as a television broadcaster and her disease tried to take her voice - but she had none of that. Now she literally roars on stage as she turns her pain into purpose. And she’s bringing some of that passion to us. Discussed in this week’s episode: The importance of listening to your body and understanding its signals. Blaise shares her personal journey of how her body’s signals led to a deeper understanding of herself and her emotions. How Blaise turned her pain into purpose and her work in helping others communicate compassionately with each other - and with themselves. Her work in reproductive health rights and how she empowers others to breathe fire. "Learning how to turn off your mind is as important as learning how to work on it." - Andrea Hanson This week I'm doing a little behind the scenes look at what I'm working on right now. My new online course, The 8 Week Mindset Challenge is starting soon, and this week I'm sharing what the challenge is all about - including negative thinking and the surprising ways it impacts us. I'm telling a little of my personal journey when I took a deep dive into my own negative thinking after I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. And common challenges among high-achievers, who I call "Ex-hustlers," in adjusting to life with chronic illness - even years after the onset of the disease. (I put myself in that category as well.) In this episode I discuss: The power of taming our inner critic (and the common advise that actually makes it louder). Teaching what I call the Whole Mindset Method and why the power of using our whole mindset is so much greater than simply looking at positivity. My upcoming 8 Week Mindset Challenge and how it sets you up to make any lifestyle change (exercise, food changes, rest, whatever you like) in a much easier and sustainable way. And how you can get involved. "Our honest thoughts hold the key to our strongest mindset." - Andrea Hanson I believe we judge ourselves entirely too much. This week I'm sharing my four new rules of mindset, designed to help improve self-compassion and confidence. I believe that having a strong mindset means embracing every aspect of our mindset, not just the positive parts. By loving ourselves more and judging our thoughts less, we can achieve and actual positive mindset (no "faking it 'till you make it" needed). In this episode: Embrace a well-rounded mindset for personal growth and success. Cultivate self-compassion while reducing self-judgment. Develop trust in your intuition and gut feelings for better decision-making. Discover the significance of your thoughts and how they impact your daily life. “Yes, some days I'm in bed - others I am at the piano or in a gondola in Venice. Life is hard. Life is GOOD.” - Susie Schwartz Susie Schwartz is a Canadian writer, public speaker and singer-songwriter. In her latest book, Help the Doctor Help You: 31 Secrets and Tips to get the BEST from your appointments (available now), Susie compiles her wisdom from an almost lifetime of being the patient into helping the reader have a strong relationship with their doctors. In this episode, Susie uses her wickedly funny sense of humor to tell stories of the good, bad and the ugly of her health journey. And she shares invaluable tips on how you can get the most out of your relationship with your doctors. Discussed in this episode - A childhood of “collecting diagnoses” and what Susie did to help herself mentally on a daily basis. Lauren Zalewski and I are talking about one of my favorite subjects - gratitude. I feel like gratitude has become somewhat of a cliche recently - which is not where it belongs. Gratitude is so powerful, when it’s done right. There are less effective ways to use gratitude - I’m sure you’ve heard people say things like “you should be grateful for this” or “Just be grateful this worse thing over here didn’t happen” You’ve heard those I’m sure. That’s not the gratitude we’re talking about. Lauren is the self described gratitude addict and she’s doing a deep dive on how she used the practice of gratitude to turn her life around from a very dark place of addiction. And her “secret sauce” for a deep gratitude practice is priceless. Lauren’s story is not to be missed - and it will inspire you to start using gratitude to its fullest.
