You may have heard the phrase, low variance in relation to literacy instruction. Low variance refers to instruction that has the following features. Firstly, it usually has a scope and sequence or a clear outline of specific content that is to be taught. People know what they're going to teach, the order in which they're going to teach it in and in the how.
Now it's common for teachers to be told exactly when to teach particular concepts and skills, and in different subject areas, the level of specificity this needs to take, I think, is a little different. I think when it comes to things that have to be mastered before we move on, enabling teachers to make the decision about when to move on is a good thing, but in other perhaps we're going to keep things a little more consistent.
