דְּאָגָה בְלֶב אִישׁ יַשְׁחֶנָּה It is written: “If there is worry in a man’s heart, he should minimize it (yashchenah).” וְאָמְרוּ רַזַ"ל שְׁנֵי פֵּרוּשִׁים Our Sages interpret this in two ways: יַסִּיחֶנָּה מִדַּעְתּוֹ (a) he should take his mind off it (yasichenah, spelled with the letter samech), יְשִׂיחֶנָּה לַאֲחֵרִים or (b) he should relate it to others (yesichenah, spelled with the letter sin). וּפֵרֵשׁ הַצֶּמַח צֶדֶק On this the Tzemach Tzedek commented לַאֲחֵרִים רַק בְּגוּף that “others” refers to people who are only physically separate from the speaker, אֲבָל מְאוּחָדִים אִתּוֹ עִמּוֹ but are united with him in spirit, שֶׁמַרְגִּישִׁים אֶת עִנְיָנוֹ sensitive to his concerns. מְבָרְכִים רֹאשׁ חֹדֶשׁ תַּמּוּז [On Shabbos Mevarchim, אֲמִירַת כָּל הַתְּהִלִּים בְּהַשְׁכָּמָה it is our custom] to recite the entire Book of Tehillim early in the morning יוֹם הִתְוַעֲדוּת and to hold a farbrengen on that day. מַעֲנֶה אַאַזְמוּ"ר לְאַאַמוּ"ר בִּיחִידוּת, חוֹרֶף תרל"ה My revered grandfather, the Rebbe [Maharash], gave the following answer to a question addressed to him by my revered father, the Rebbe [Rashab], in the course of a yechidus that took place in the winter of 5635 (1874-75): הַיֵּצֶר הָרָע נִקְרָא נֶפֶשׁ הַבַּהֲמִית “The Evil Inclination is called the ‘animal soul,’ לֹא מִפְּנֵי שֶׁהוּא בְּהֵמָה דַוְקָא not because it is bestial. כִּי לִפְעָמִים הוּא שׁוּעָל פִּקֵּחַ שֶׁבַּחַיּוֹת On the contrary, at times it is like a fox, the cleverest of animals, וּצְרִיכִים לְחָכְמָה מְרוּבָּה לְהָבִין תַּחְבּוּלוֹתָיו so that one needs considerable wisdom to recognize its schemes. וְלִפְעָמִים הוּא מִתְלַבֵּשׁ בִּלְבוּשׁ צַדִּיק תָּמִים עָנָו וּבַעַל מִדּוֹת טוֹבוֹת At times, it even clothes itself in the garb of a tzaddik, who is sincere, humble, and of noble character. בְּכָל אֶחָד וְאֶחָד הַנֶּפֶשׁ הַבַּהֲמִית שֶׁלּוֹ הִיא לְפִי מְהוּתוֹ הַפְּרָטִי “Every individual’s animal soul matches his personal nature. וְיֵשׁ אֲשֶׁר מִתְעוֹרֵר חֵשֶׁק גָּדוֹל לִלְמוֹד חֲסִידוּת A person may be aroused by a great desire to study Chassidus אוֹ לְהִתְבּוֹנֵן הֵיטֵב בְּאֵיזֶה הַשְׂכָּלָה or to meditate deeply on a given abstract concept, וּבֶאֱמֶת הִנֵּה זֶהוּ רַק עֲצַת הַיֵּצֶר though in truth, this is just the counsel of the [Evil] Inclination וּמִתַּחְבּוּלוֹת נֶפֶשׁ הַבַּהֲמִית and the machinations of the animal soul לִמְנוֹעַ מֵעֲבוֹדַת הַתְּפִלָּה וְכַדּוֹמֶה to keep him from praying, and the like. וּנְקוֹט הַאי כְּלָלָא בְּיָדְךָ וּזְכוֹר אוֹתוֹ תָּמִיד “Adopt this principle and remember it constantly: כִּי כָּל דָּבָר הַמּוֹעִיל אוֹ מֵבִיא לַעֲבוֹדָה בְּפוֹעַל Whenever you encounter something that furthers or brings you to actual Divine service, הִנֵּה כָּל מְנִיעָה שֶׁתִּהְיֶה לְדָבָר זֶה anything that obstructs this — אֲפִילוּ אִם הַמְּנִיעָה הִיא מִדָּבָר הַיּוֹתֵר נַעֲלָה no matter how lofty — הוּא רַק מִתַּחְבּוּלוֹתֶיהָ שֶׁל נֶפֶשׁ הַבַּהֲמִית stems only from the intrigues of the animal soul.” וְסִיֵּם אַאַמוּ"ר נִשְׁמָתוֹ עֵדֶן After quoting the above teaching, my revered father, the Rebbe [Rashab], concluded: עַד אָז לֹא יָדַעְתִּי אַז עֶס קעֶן זַיין אַ פְרוּמעֶר נֶפֶשׁ הַבַּהֲמִית “Until then, I did not know that there could be a pious animal soul, וועֶר רעֶדְט נאָךְ אַ חֲסִידִישׁעֶר נֶפֶשׁ הַבַּהֲמִית and even a ‘chassidic’ animal soul….” Text and Translation courtesy of Sichos in English For questions and follow-up: cablejew@gmail.com…

לַאֲמִירַת וַהֲבִיאֵנוּ לְשָׁלוֹם כוּ When saying the phrase vahavieinu leshalom, מְחַבְּרִים תְּחִלָּה בּ' הַצִּיצִיּוֹת דִּלְפָנָיו one first gathers together the two front tzitziyos; אַחַר כַּךְ מְצַרְפִים צִיצִית כָּנָף הַשְּׂמָאלִי דְּלַאֲחוֹרָיו to these are added the one from the back left corner אַחַרי זֶה צִיצִית דְּכָנָף הַיָּמִין and then the one from the back right corner. וְאוֹחֲזִים אוֹתָם בֵּין קְמִיצָה לְזֶרֶת דְּיַד שְׂמֹאל All four are then held between the ring finger and little finger of the left hand. נוֹשְׁקִים הַצִּיצִיּוֹת שֵׁשׁ פְּעָמִים The tzitzis are kissed six times: הַיְינוּ בַּאֲמִירַת תֵּיבוֹת: צִיצִית, צִיצִית, לְצִיצִית, אֱמֶת, קַיֶּמֶת, לָעַד when reciting the words tzitzis, tzitzis, letzitzis, emes, kayemes, and laad. רַבֵּנוּ בְּסֵפֶר שֶׁל בֵּינוּנִים פֶּרֶק ג' אוֹמֵר In chapter 3 of Tanya, the [Alter] Rebbe states כִּי ג' מוֹחִין חַבַּ"ד וְז' מִדּוֹת that the three intellectual faculties of Chochmah, Binah and Daas, and the seven emotive attributes, הֵם הִשְׁתַּלְשְׁלוּת מֵעֶשֶׂר סְפִירוֹת הָעֶלְיוֹנוֹת are an extension of the ten supernal Sefiros. דְּכָל זֶה הוּא בְּנֶפֶשׁ רוּחַ וּנְשָׁמָה All this refers to the nefesh, ruach, and neshamah, שֶׁהֵם הַמִּתְלַבְּשִׁים בְּגוּף הָאָדָם the levels of the soul that are vested in the human body. אָמְנָם עִנְיַן הַמְּסִירַת נֶפֶשׁ עַל אֱלֹקוּת By contrast, the concept of mesirus nefesh [i.e., the ability to sacrifice oneself] for the sake of G‑dliness — וואָס אַ אִיד נִיט עֶר וִויל אוּן נִיט עֶר קאָן זַיין חַס וְשָׁלוֹם אַ נִפְרָד מֵאֱלֹקוּת meaning that a Jew neither wants nor is able to become severed from G‑dliness זֶהוּ מֵעַצְמוּת אֵין סוֹף בָּרוּךְ הוּא — stems from the very Essence of the [infinite] Ein Sof. שֶׁלְּמַעְלָה מֵעִנְיַן הַסְּפִירוֹת דְּרֵאשִׁיתָם הִיא סְפִירַת הַחָכְמָה. And this [level of Elokus ] transcends [even] the highest of the Sefiros , which is the Sefirah of Chochmah. בְּחֹדֶשׁ מַרְחֶשְׁוָן תּרי"ג In the month of MarCheshvan, 5613 (1852), קָבַע הַצֶּמַח צֶדֶק the Tzemach Tzedek scheduled — מִלְּבַד הַשִּׁעוּרִים הָאַחֵרִים in addition to his other study sessions — שִׁעוּר לִמּוּד עִם אַאַזְמוּ"ר בְּכָל יוֹם שְׁתֵּי שָׁעוֹת וּמֶחֱצָה a study session with my revered grandfather, the Rebbe [Maharash], for two-and-a-half hours every day. בְּחוֹרֶף מַתְחִיל מִשָּׁעָה הָעֲשִׂירִית לַיְלָה In the winter they would begin at ten at night, וּבְקַיִץ מִשָּׁעָה הָרְבִיעִית לִפְנוֹת בּוֹקֶר and in the summer, at four in the morning. שְׁתֵּי שָׁנִים הָיָה הַלִּמּוּד: קַבָּלָה עִם בֵּאוּרֵי חֲסִידוּת For two years, they studied Kabbalah as explained in the teachings of Chassidus. אַחַר זְמַן זֶה — עַד אֱלוּל תּרט"ז, שֶׁאָז נִפְסַק הַשִּׁעוּר After this time, until Elul, 5616 (1856), when this study session ceased, לָמְדוּ סִפְרֵי מֶחְקָר they would study works of medieval Jewish philosophy ( Chakirah ) — הָרַב סְעַדְיָה גָּאוֹן, מוֹרֶה נְבוּכִים, עִקָּרִים, כּוּזָרִי, וְעוֹד R. כְּבָר הֶחְלִיטוּ הָרִאשׁוֹנִים כְּמַלְאָכִים, זְכוּתָם יָגֵן עָלֵינוּ The sages of the early generations — who have been likened to angels — determined long ago אֲשֶׁר רְפוּאַת הַנֶּפֶשׁ הִיא כִּרְפוּאַת הַגּוּף that healing the soul is similar to healing the body. לְכֹל לְרֹאשׁ צָרִיךְ לְסַמֵּן מְקוֹם הַחוֹלִי The first step is to discern the source of the infirmity. אִם הוּא מִצַּד שֶׁחוֹמֶר גּוּפוֹ עָב גַס וּמוּשְׁחָת Does it stem from the body’s physical coarseness and impurity, אוֹ שֶׁהַחִסָּרוֹן הוּא בְּכֹחוֹת נַפְשׁוֹ or from the attributes of the soul שֶׁיֵּשׁ לָהּ נְטִיּוֹת לְעִנְיָנִים רָעִים כְּמוֹ גַּאֲוָה, שֶׁקֶר וְכַדּוֹמֶה that incline toward undesirable traits such as pride and falsehood? אוֹ שֶׁמְקוֹר הַחוֹלִי הוּא בְּהָרְגִילוּת Perhaps the infirmity stems from bad habits שֶׁמִּפְּנֵי רוֹעַ הַחִנּוּךְ אוֹ רוֹעַ הַסְּבִיבָה בָּא לִרְגִילוֹת רָעוֹת that result from a faulty education or negative surroundings. עַד אֲשֶׁר לֹא יִתְבָּרְרוּ פְּרָטֵי מְקוֹם הַחוֹלִי וְסִבַּת אֲחִיזַת הַמַּחֲלָה Until the source of the infirmity and the reason it has taken hold become clear, אִי אֶפְשָׁר לְהַתְחִיל בִּרְפוּאָתוֹ it is impossible for healing to begin. כִּי אִם לְסַדֵּר אוֹפֶן הַנְהָגָה יְשָׁרָה בְּכָל הַדְּבָרִים בְּמַה שֶׁיַּעֲשֶׂה וּבְמַה שֶׁיִּמְנַע אֶת עַצְמוֹ מֵהֶם What is possible is to adopt a proper path of conduct in all matters: what one should and should not do, בְּוַעֲשֵׂה טוֹב בְּקִיּוּם הַמִּצְוֹת קְבִיעוּת עִתִּים לַתּוֹרָה קִנְיַן מִדּוֹת טוֹבוֹת both by “doing good”3 — observing the mitzvos, setting regular times for Torah study, and acquiring positive character traits — וּבְסוּר מֵרַע and by “turning away from evil.” אָמְנָם מַה שֶׁנָּחוּץ בְּיוֹתֵר הוּא The most important thing, however, שֶׁיְּעוֹרֵר הַחוֹלֶה בְּעַצְמוֹ שְׁנֵי עִנְיָנִים is for a sick person to arouse within himself two realizations: א) לֵדַע שֶׁהוּא חוֹלֶה וְיִכְסוֹף וְיִשְׁתּוֹקֵק לְהִתְרַפְּאוֹת מֵחָלְיוֹ (a) an awareness that he is sick, and a desire and a yearning to be cured of his illness; ב) הַיְדִיעָה שֶׁיָּכוֹל לְהִתְרַפְּאוֹת (b) the knowledge that he can be cured, וְהַתִּקְוָה וּבִטָּחוֹן גָּמוּר כִּי בְּעֶזְרַת הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרֵךְ יִתְרַפֵּא מֵחָלְיוֹ and the hope and absolute trust that with G‑d’s help, he will be cured. דִי וועֶלט דאַרף האָבּעֶן טַהֲרַת הָאֲוִיר This world needs to have its air purified, טַהֲרַת הָאֲוִיר אִיז נאָר דוּרךְ אוֹתִיּוֹת הַתּוֹרָה and this can be accomplished only through the letters of the Torah [that one recites]. דִי אוֹתִיּוֹת שֶׁבַּתּוֹרָה זַיינעֶן אַ שְׁמִירָה כְּלָלִית אוּן אַ שְׁמִירָה פְּרָטִית These letters afford both universal and individual protection. חֲלוּקַת הַשִּׁתָּא סִדְרֵי מִשְׁנָה (בְּעַל-פֶּה) אִיז אַ "וּבְלֶכְתְּךָ בַדֶּרֶךְ"'דִיקעֶר The division of the Six Orders of the Mishnah (to be studied by heart) fulfills [the mandate to study Torah] “while you walk on your way.” דִי מִשְׁנָה מִשְׁנָיוֹת וואָס מעֶן וועֶט חַזֶרְ'ן Every single mishnah that a person reviews [from memory], וואוּ מעֶן וועֶט זַיין, אִין וואָס פאַר אַ פְּלאַץ מעֶן וועֶט זַיין wherever he may be, וועֶט בּאֶלַייכְטעֶן דִי פאַרְבִּינְדוּנג פוּן יִשְׂרָאֵל מִיט קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא lights up the connection between the Jewish people and G‑d. מִשְׁנָה אִיז אוֹתִיּוֹת נְשָׁמָה Significantly, the word Mishnah (משנה) shares the same letters as nashamah (נשמה) — “soul.” עֶס אִיז זֵייעֶר שְׁוועֶר צוּ געֶפִינעֶן דִי וועֶרטעֶר It is difficult to find the appropriate words אוֹיסצוּדרִיקעֶן דעֶם גְרעֶסטעֶן תּוֹעֶלֶת בְּעֶזְרַת ה' יִתְבָּרֵךְ to express the great benefit, אִין דעֶר שְׁמִירָה כְּלָלִית אוּן דעֶר שְׁמִירָה פְּרָטִית and the universal and individual protection וואָס דעֶר כְּסֵדֶר'דִיגעֶר חַזֶרְ'ן מִשְׁנָיוֹת וועֶט בְּעֶזְרַת ה' יִתְבָּרֵךְ בְּרֵיינגעֶן that will be gained through the constant review of mishnayos. אוּן עֶס פעֶלעֶן אוֹיס דִי וועֶרטעֶר And there are no words צוּ בּאַשׁרַייבּעֶן דעֶם גְרוֹיסעֶן נַחַת רוּחַ to describe the great satisfaction וואָס מעֶן וועֶט פאַרשׁאַפעֶן דעֶם בּוֹרֵא עוֹלָם בָּרוּךְ הוּא that [such review] gives the Creator of the World. Day 49 of the Omer עֶרֶב חַג הַשָּׁבוּעוֹת תּקנ"ז אָמַר רַבֵּנוּ הַזָּקֵן תּוֹרָה On the eve of Shavuos, 5557 (1797), the Alter Rebbe delivered a teaching וְקִדַּשְׁתָּם הַיּוֹם וּמָחָר גוֹ [on G‑d’s command to Moshe Rabbeinu a few days before the people were to receive the Torah]: “You shall sanctify them today and tomorrow [and they shall launder their garments].” וְקִדַּשְׁתָּם הַיּוֹם וּמָחָר זֶהוּ מִלְמַעְלָה He said: “‘You shall sanctify them today and tomorrow’ is granted from above, אֲבָל וְכִבְּסוּ שִׂמְלוֹתָם דאָס דאַרף מעֶן אַלֵיין but ‘launder[ing one’s] garments’ must be done on one’s own.” דאָס אִיז געֶוועֶן דִי גאַנצעֶ תּוֹרָה That was the entire teaching. דעֶר צֶמַח צֶדֶק האָט מְבַאֵר געֶוועֶן The Tzemach Tzedek pointed out וְקִדַּשְׁתָּם אִיז געֶזאָגט געֶוואָרן צוּ מֹשֶׁה'ן that the command “you shall sanctify” was directed to Moshe. אוּן אִתְפַּשְׁטוּתָא דְמֹשֶׁה בְּכָל דָרָא וְדָרָא Now, there is “an extension of Moshe in every generation” — וואָס זֵיי קעֶנעֶן הֵיילִיג מאַכעֶן דעֶם הַיינט אוּן דעֶם מאָרגעֶן [and these tzaddikim in every generation] have the power to sanctify one’s today and tomorrow. אָבּעֶר מְ'דאַרף דעֶרצוּ וְכִבְּסוּ שִׂמְלוֹתָם In addition, however, “they [i.e., the people at large] must launder their garments” — לְבוּשֵׁי מַחֲשָׁבָה דִּבּוּר וְמַעֲשֶׂה that is, the [soul’s] garments — thought, speech, and action. וואָס דאָס דאַרף מעֶן אַליין And this, every individual must do himself. Day 46 of the Omer אָנָּא בְּכֹחַ — דְּקַבָּלַת שַׁבָּת — אוֹמְרִים בְּלַחַשׁ In [Friday evening’s welcoming] Kabbalas Shabbos service, the passage beginning Ana Becho’ach is said in a whisper. וּפְרוֹשׂ עָלֵינוּ כו' — בְּקַבָּלַת שַׁבָּת — בַּעֲמִידָה In [Friday evening’s welcoming] Kabbalas Shabbos service, one stands when one reaches the words u’fros aleinu. בִּשְׁנַת תקפ"ט חָל שַׁבָּת פָּרָשַׁת בַּמִּדְבָּר ה' בְּסִיוָן In the year 5589 (1829), the Shabbos of Parshas Bamidbar fell on the fifth of Sivan. קוֹדֶם הַדְלָקַת נֵרוֹת שֶׁל שַׁבָּת אָמַר הַצֶּמַח צֶדֶק מַאֲמָר שְׂאוּ אֶת רֹאשׁ גוֹ' אֲבוֹתָם Before candle-lighting, the Tzemach Tzedek delivered a maamar on the phrase, Se’u es rosh, פֵּרוּשׁ שְׂאוּ כְּפֵרוּשׁ הָרַב אַבְרָהָם בֶּן עֶזְרָא מֵעִנְיַן כִּי תִשָּׂא אֶת רֹאשׁ interpreting its first word in the spirit of Ibn Ezra’s comment on the verse, Ki sisa es rosh. וּבֵאוּר הָעִנְיָן שֶׁעַל יְדֵי עֲבוֹדַת הֲאָרַת הַנְּשָׁמָה שֶׁבַּגּוּף He explained that through the Divine service carried out by the ray of the soul that is enclothed in the body, נַעֲשָׂה עֲלִיָה בְּרֹאשׁ וְעֶצֶם הַנְּשָׁמָה כְּמוֹ שֶׁהִיא לְמַעְלָה the apex and essence of the soul as it exists in the spiritual realms is elevated. וְהִסְבִּיר כַּמָּה פְּסוּקִים וּמַאֲמָרֵי זֹהַר וּמִדְרָשׁ [In this context,] he explained several verses and statements of the Zohar and the Midrash. בְּשַׁבָּת בַּצָּהֳרַיִם אָמַר רַבֵּנוּ הַדְּרוּשׁ וְאֵרַשְׂתִּיךְ לִי לְעוֹלָם At midday on Shabbos, he delivered a maamar on the verse beginning Ve’eirastich li leolam, וּבֵאוּרוֹ שֶׁנִּדְפְּסוּ בְּלִקּוּטֵי תּוֹרָה together with an explanation that appears with it in Likkutei Torah. בְּיוֹם א דְּחַג הַשָּׁבוּעוֹת אָמַר רַבֵּנוּ אֶת הַדְּרוּשׁ וּסְפַרְתֶּם לָכֶם On the first day of Shavuos he delivered a maamar on the verse beginning U’Sfartem lachem, וּבֵאוּרוֹ — שֶׁנִּדְפְּסוּ בְּלִקוּטֵי תּוֹרָה together with an explanation that is appended to it in Likkutei Torah. בַּיּוֹם הַשֵּׁנִי דְּחַג הַשָּׁבוּעוֹת בִּסְעוּדַּת יוֹם טוֹב אָמַר רַבֵּנוּ אֶת הַדְּרוּשׁ וְהַחָכְמָה מֵאַיִן תִּמָּצֵא On the second day of Shavuos , during the festive meal, he delivered the maamar that begins, Vehachochmah me’ayin timatzei. וְהוּא בֵּאוּר הַשֵּׁנִי בְּעִנְיַן תִּסְפְּרוּ חֲמִשִּׁים יוֹם הַנִּדְפָס בְּלִקּוּטֵי תּוֹרָה This appears in Likkutei Torah as the “second explanation” of the concept of counting fifty days. Day 40 of the Omer מִמַּאֲמָרֵי רַבֵּנוּ הַזָּקֵן בִּשְׁנַת תקנ"ה בְּליאָזנאָ The Alter Rebbe delivered the following maamar in Liozna in the year 5555 (1795): שְׂכַר מִצְוָה מִצְוָה “The reward for a mitzvah is a mitzvah.” הַמִּצְוָה בְּעֶצֶם עַצְמוּתָהּ הִיא הַשָּׂכָר The very essence of the mitzvah is itself the reward for the mitzvah. וְהִתְגַלּוּת הָעַצְמוּת תִּהְיֶה לֶעָתִיד This essence will be revealed in the Ultimate Future. אֲבָל זֶהוּ הַקֶּרֶן קַיֶּמֶת שֶׁל הַמִּצְוָה That is [only] the principal of the mitzvah, which is preserved [for the future]. אָמְנָם פֵּירוֹתֶיהָ אָדָם אוֹכֵל בָּעוֹלָם הַזֶּה However, the fruits of the mitzvah (i.e., its side benefits) are enjoyed by a person in This World. וְהוּא בְּכָל מִצְוָה וּמִצְוָה בְּעִנְיָנָהּ [This applies] to every mitzvah, each in its own way. דְכַאֲשֶׁר צָרִיךְ לְאוֹתוֹ דָּבָר הוּא נַעֲנֶה When [the person who fulfills the mitzvah ] needs its particular influence, he receives it. Day 39 of the Omer מְבָרְכִים רֹאשׁ חֹדֶשׁ סִיוָן [On] Shabbos Mevarchim, Sivan [it is our custom] אֲמִירַת כָּל הַתְּהִלִּים בְּהַשְׁכָּמָה to recite the entire Book of Tehillim early in the morning יוֹם הִתְוַעֲדוּת and to hold a farbrengen on that day. לִשְׁלִישִׁי עוֹלֶה הַבַּעַל קוֹרֵא, וּמֵעַצְמוֹ [In years in which Parshas Bechukosai is read alone,] the third aliyah is customarily taken by the baal koreh, on his own initiative. אוֹמְרִים אָב הָרַחֲמִים [After the Torah Reading,] the passage beginning Av HaRachamim is recited. אִם בְּחוּקּוֹתַי תֵּלֵכוּ [It is written:] “If you will follow My statutes.” אִם זֶה הוּא לְשׁוֹן תַּחֲנוּנִים G‑d is pleading here with the Jewish people: כְּמַאֲמַר רַזַ"ל, שֶׁכַּוָּנָתוֹ הַלְוַאי בְּחוּקּוֹתַי תֵּלֵכוּ Our Sages say that the intention [of the plea] is “If only you would follow My statutes!” וְזֶה שהקב"ה כִּבְיָכוֹל, מִתְחַנֵּן לִפְנֵיהֶם שֶׁיִּשְׁמְרוּ אֶת הַתּוֹרָה The fact that G‑d entreats the Jews, as it were, to observe the Torah, זֶה עַצְמוֹ מְסַיֵּעַ וְנוֹתֵן כֹּחַ לָאָדָם שֶׁיַּעֲמוֹד בִּבְחִירָתוֹ הַטּוֹבָה in itself helps and empowers a person to stand firm in his positive choices. וְעוֹד זֹאת אֲשֶׁר בְּחוּקּוֹתַי תֵּלֵכוּ דְּנַעֲשֵׂית הַנְּשָׁמָה מְהַלֵּךְ Moreover, [the phrase Im bechukosai teileichu, here translated as “If you will follow My statutes,” literally means, “If you will walk in My statutes”]. Day 38 of the Omer רֵאשִׁית הַיְרִידָה, רַחֲמָנָא לִצְלַן The first stage in a person’s spiritual decline (Heaven forbid) הוּא הֶעְדֵּר הָעֲבוֹדָה בִּתְפִלָּה is a lack of effort when serving G‑d in prayer. עֶס וועֶרט אַלץ טְרוּקעֶן אוּן קאַלט Everything becomes parched and cold. דִי מִצְוַת אֲנָשִׁים מְלוּמָּדָה וועֶרט שׁוֹין אוֹיךְ שְׁוועֶר Even the routine performance of mitzvos 1 becomes burdensome. מעֶן אַיילט One hurries [through their observance] מעֶן וועֶרט אָן דעֶם געֶשְׁמאַק אִין תּוֹרָה and loses a taste for Torah study. וְהָאֲוִיר מִתְגַּשֵּׁם The very atmosphere becomes more materially oriented. וּמוּבָן הַדָּבָר שֶׁאֵינוֹ שַׁיָּךְ כְּלָל לִפְעוֹל עַל הַזּוּלַת And it goes without saying that a person in such a state cannot positively influence others at all. Day 33 of the Omer אֵצֶל אַדְמוּ"ר הָאֶמְצָעִי הָיָה לג בָּעוֹמֶר מִיָּמִים טוֹבִים הַמְצוּיָּנִים For the Mitteler Rebbe, Lag BaOmer was one of the outstanding festivals. מעֶן פלעֶגט אַרוֹיסגעֶהן אוֹיפְ'ן פעֶלד He would go out to the fields [together with the chassidim]. עֶר פלעֶגט זִיךְ נִיט וואַשׁעֶן He would not partake of bread, אָבּעֶר נעֶהמעֶן מַשְׁקֶה but would say LeChayim over mashke (liquor), וואָס מִצַּד הַבְּרִיאוּת האָט עֶר עֶס נִיט געֶטאָרט even though this was forbidden to him for health reasons. מעֶן האָט דעֶמאָלט געֶזעֶהן אַ סַך מוֹפְתִים [The chassidim present] would witness many miracles, דאָס רוֹב מוֹפְתִים אִיז געֶוועֶן בְּנוֹגֵעַ קִינדעֶר most of which were blessings for couples who wanted to have children. אוּן אַ גאַנץ יאָהר האָט מעֶן געֶוואַרט אוֹיף לג בָּעוֹמֶר People would wait the entire year for Lag BaOmer. Day 32 of the Omer אֵין אוֹמְרִים צִדְקָתְךָ [When the eve of Lag BaOmer falls on Shabbos, ] the passage beginning Tzidkas’cha is omitted in the Afternoon Service. בִּקְרִיאַת שְׁמַע שֶׁיֵּשׁ אוֹמְרִים בַּבּוֹקֶר — קוֹדֶם הַתְּפִלָּה In the Shema that some people recite in the morning before the Morning Service כְּדֵי לָצֵאת חוֹבַת קְרִיאַת שְׁמַע בִּזְמַנָּהּ in order to fulfill their obligation to recite the Shema at the proper time, גַּם כֵּן כּוֹפְלִים ג' הַתֵּיבוֹת the [last] three words are repeated — [as is also done when reciting the Shema in the course of the Morning Service, if one is praying without a minyan ] — "וּמְסַיְּמִים בְּתֵיבַת “אֱמֶת and the word emes is added. בִּקְרִיאַת שְׁמַע דִּתְפִלִּין דְּרַבֵּנוּ תַּם וְשִׁמּוּשָׁא רַבָּה אֵין כּוֹפְלִים When one recites the Shema while wearing tefillin whose parshiyos are arranged according to the view of Rabbeinu Tam or of Shimusha Rabba, these three words are not repeated, "אֲבָל אוֹמְרִים “אֱמֶת but the word emes is added. ל"ג בָּעוֹמֶר שְׁנַת תּר"ד — לְעֶרֶךְ On Lag BaOmer, around the year 5604 (1844), סִפֵּר הַצֶּמַח צֶדֶק תּוֹרַת הַבַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב the Tzemach Tzedek relayed the following teaching of the Baal Shem Tov. עֶס שְׁטעֶהט כִּי תִהְיוּ אַתֶּם אֶרֶץ חֵפֶץ אָמַר ה' צְבָאוֹת “It is written, ‘For you shall be a cherished land, declares the G‑d of Hosts.’ אָט אַזוֹי וִוי דִי גרעֶסטעֶ חֲכָמִים וועֶלעֶן אֵייבִּיג נִיט דעֶרגֵיין דִי גְרוֹיסעֶ, טִבְעִיּוּת'דִיגעֶ אוֹצָרוֹת Just as the wisest minds will never be able to grasp the vast natural treasures וועֶלכעֶ הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרֵךְ האָט טוֹבֵעַ געֶוועֶן בָּאָרֶץ that G‑d has hidden in the earth, אַז הַכֹּל הָיָה מִן הֶעָפָר to grasp that ‘everything came from dust,’ אָט אַזוֹי קעֶן קֵיינעֶר נִיט דעֶרְגֵיין דִי גְרוֹיסעֶ אוֹצָרוֹת וואָס לִיגעֶן אִין אִידעֶן so, too, no one can appreciate the treasures that lie hidden within Jews, וואָס זֵיי זַיינעֶן דעֶם אוֹיבּעֶרשְׁטעֶנס בָּרוּךְ הוּא אֶרֶץ חֵפֶץ who are G‑d’s cherished land.” וְסִיֵּם הַבַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב The Baal Shem Tov concluded: אִיך וִויל מאַכעֶן פוּן אִידעֶן “I want to bring Jews to the point אַז זֵיי זאָלעֶן געֶבּעֶן דעֶם יְבוּל, וואָס דעֶם אוֹיבּעֶרשְׁטעֶנס בָּרוּךְ הוּא אַ אֶרֶץ חֵפֶץ קעֶן געֶבּעֶן. that they will yield the kind of harvest that G‑d’s ‘cherished land’ can yield.” Text and Translation courtesy of Sichos in English For questions and follow-up: cablejew@gmail.com…

Day 31 of the Omer אַאַמוּ"ר כְּשֶׁהָיָה נוֹטֵל צִפָּרְנָיו, הָיָה מְעָרֵב עִמָּהֶם קֵיסָם, קוֹדֶם הַשְּׂרֵיפָה When my revered father, the Rebbe [Rashab], would cut his nails, he would put a sliver of wood together with the clippings before burning them. אַאַזְמוּ"ר אָמַר לְהֶחָסִיד ר' אֵלִיָּהוּ אַבּעֶלעֶר R. Day 25 of the Omer נַהֲגִינָן לְהַטְבִּיל פְּרוּסַת הַמּוֹצִיא שָׁלֹשׁ פְּעָמִים בְּמֶלַח According to our custom, the piece of bread over which the blessing HaMotzi is recited is dipped into salt three times; וְלֹא לִזְרוֹק הַמֶּלַח עַל הַפְּרוּסָה one does not shake the salt over the bread. יוֹם בּ' דְּחַג הַשָּׁבוּעוֹת תּרכ"א בִּסְעוּדָּה סִפֵּר הַצֶּמַח צֶדֶק During the festive meal on the second day of Shavuos, 5621 (1861), the Tzemach Tzedek related יוֹם בּ' דְּחַג הַשָּׁבוּעוֹת תּקנ"ה בִּסְעוּדָּה אָמַר אַאַזְמוּ"ר (רַבֵּנוּ הַזָּקֵן) that during the festive meal on the second day of Shavuos, 5555 (1795), his grandfather, the Alter Rebbe, had said: בְּיוֹם בּ' דְּחַג הַשָּׁבוּעוֹת תּקכ"ח בִּסְעוּדָּה אָמַר כְּבוֹד קְדוּשַּׁת מוֹרִי וְרַבִּי (הַמַּגִּיד מִמֶּעזרִיטשׁ) “During the festive meal on the second day of Shavuos, 5528 (1768), my Rebbe, the Maggid of Mezritch, וּסְפַרְתֶּם לָכֶם [interpreted the command], U’Sfartem lachem (lit., ‘And you shall count for yourselves’) as follows: וּסְפַרְתֶּם הוּא מִלְּשׁוֹן סַפִּירוּת וּבְהִירוּת The verb U’Sfartem (lit., ‘you shall count’) shares a root with the Hebrew word for the translucent sapphire. וּסְפַרְתֶּם לָכֶם, צְרִיכִים לַעֲשׂוֹת שֶׁיִּהְיֶה הַלָּכֶם בָּהִיר [Hence, on the non-literal level of interpretation known as derush, this verb implies an additional meaning — ‘you shall make luminous.’] [The object of that verb is] lachem (‘yourselves’). [Thus, on a mystical level, the message of the above command is]: ‘You shall make yourselves luminous!’” וַיִּשָּׁעֵן כְּבוֹד קְדוּשַּׁת אַאַזְמוּ"ר עַל זְרוֹעוֹת קָדְשׁוֹ The Tzemach Tzedek continued: “My revered grandfather, the Alter Rebbe, then leaned on his forearms וַיְשׁוֹרֵר אֶת הַנִּגּוּן שֶׁל ד' בָּבוֹת בִּדְבֵקוּת גְּדוֹלָה and sang the Niggun of Four Themes in a rapt state of intense dveikus. אַחַר כַּךְ הִגְבִּיהַּ אֶת רֹאשׁוֹ הַקָּדוֹשׁ He then raised his head וַיֹּאמַר — בְּנִגּוּן שֶׁל שְׁאֵלָה and asked in a rhetorical singsong: וּבַמֶּה מְסַפְּרִים אֶת הַלָּכֶם ‘And how do you make yourself luminous?’ וְתוֹךְ כְּדֵי דִבּוּר אָמַר — בְּנִגּוּן שֶׁל תְּשׁוּבָה He immediately answered his own question, again melodiously: בְּשֶׁבַע שַׁבָּתוֹת תְּמִימוֹת ‘By counting seven perfect weeks — בְּבֵרוּר שֶׁבַע הַמִּדּוֹת by refining the seven primary character traits, שֶׁכָּל מִדָּה וּמִדָּה תִּהְיֶה כְּלוּלָה מִשֶּׁבַע so that each of those character traits is [tempered by being] interconnected with all seven attributes. וְשֶׁבַע הַמִּדּוֹת עַצְמָם יִהְיוּ שֶׁבַע שַׁבָּתוֹת “‘The seven character traits will then be seven Shabbasos [i.e., they will be Shabbos- like], דְּשַׁבָּת אֵינָהּ צְרִיכָה בֵּרוּר in the sense that Shabbos does not need to be refined.’“ Text and Translation courtesy of Sichos in English For questions and follow-up: cablejew@gmail.com…
