I have seen this firsthand when meeting with companies and firms of all sizes. They are looking for a guiding light on all things standards and interoperability, as well as finding a common ground with this soon to be mainstay of the future of the internet.
Interoperability is the bedrock of the metaverse, to enable multiple disruptive technologies to work together, to build bridges between applications to scale beyond a series of disconnected silos, and to evolve a platform that is open and inclusive for all.
Open to any organization, the Metaverse Standards Forum provides a venue for cooperation between standards organizations and companies to foster the development of interoperability standards for an open and inclusive metaverse, and accelerate their development and deployment through pragmatic, action-based projects.
Forum Establishes Pipeline of Exploratory and Domain Working Groups – The Forum has initiated a pipeline of member-driven Exploratory and Working Groups that are meeting regularly to create Charters and execute the projects they define. The Working Groups currently include ‘3D Asset Interoperability using USD and glTF’, ‘Digital Asset Management’, ‘Metaverse Standards Register’ and ‘Real/Virtual World Integration.’ The exploratory groups currently include ‘3D Web Interoperability‘, ‘Digital Fashion Wearables for Avatars, Interoperable Characters/Avatars’, ‘Network Requirements and Capabilities’, ‘Privacy, Cybersecurity & Identity’ and ‘Technical Interoperability and End-User Troubleshooting.’

Let’s get a little technical today and do a deep dive into Ethereum and other blockchains. This was an educational discussion with Amir Forouzani, Co-founder & CEO, of Puffer Labs . The world, perhaps the US, is finally waking up to the power and potential of DeFi or decentralized finance. We are beginning to see what I termed in 2017 as the “Tokenization of all Assets” is starting to take shape. Now renamed RWA or Real-World Assets, it is leveraging blockchain technology to tokenize any asset, be it tangible or intangible. One of the impediments in this space has been regulatory, another purely technology. Today we will focus on the technological aspect of how Ethereum, the world’s first blockchain dedicated to smart contracts, and a platform for being the world’s computer, enables this. There are some concerns with Ethereum, which we hope to delineate here today with Amir, and some solutions, including Puffer’s product, UniFi. While Puffer is broadly recognized as a Liquid Restaking Protocol, the company has rapidly evolved into a leading innovator in Ethereum’s decentralized infrastructure. Since closing its $18 million Series A round in April 2024, Puffer has developed a clear mandate to unify the Ethereum ecosystem, addressing the longstanding fragmentation of the Ethereum network, which has been exacerbated by the ongoing proliferation of Layer 2 solutions. One of Puffer’s signature solutions, UniFi, is a based rollup to Ethereum set to transform the L2 landscape. UniFi is low-cost, capable of sub-second transactions, and allows asset withdrawal from L2 (UniFi) to L1 (Ethereum) within a minute, which is multitudes faster than any existing rollups. Did you know that if you are a holder of digital assets, you can take a loan out against those tokens? Ledn is a company that offers this service. I met with Mauricio Di Bartolomeo, Co-Founder and CSO of Ledn for a dynamic conversation about how this works. More about the company from CoinDesk: Cryptocurrency lending company Ledn is offering customers crypto-backed loans where all the assets remain locked up with a qualified custodian, as the company adapts its centralized finance approach to a post-FTX world. Ledn has done a brisk trade in standard loans to date, where bitcoin (BTC) posted as collateral can be further lent out to subsidize the loan. From Ledger: Web3 is all about digital freedom. But with freedom comes responsibility. Put simply, a crypto wallet is an interface that allows you to access and manage your funds on a blockchain. It acts as a sort of control panel, showing you exactly how much crypto you have. Plus, it allows you to communicate with the blockchain, sending and receiving valuable digital assets. You might say that your crypto wallet is the bridge between you and your crypto funds on the blockchain. However, despite the name, a crypto wallet does not contain your coins or tokens – those stay on the blockchain itself. Rather, its purpose is to secure the all-important private keys that allow you to access your blockchain address, and everything stored there. I was delighted to have Gerald Heydenreich, Founder of EtherMail . In case you have not heard, interactions with NFTs, cryptocurrency, and all things blockchain can be a bit painful to control. Not anymore! Recently EtherMail launched its Email-as-a-Wallet (EaaW) solution, enabling users to create non-custodial wallets through Gmail or Apple accounts in under one minute – broadening the accessibility of blockchain-based applications and services to billions of users worldwide who currently don’t have a digital wallet. EtherMail has over 500,000 users and announced a $4 million funding round led by the powerhouse of Tim Draper and Draper Associates last year. Email-as-a-wallet provides a familiar and easy entry point for users to explore the Web3 space, and seamlessly buy, send and receive digital assets, while circumventing the steep Web3 learning curve. Email as a wallet includes a ‘know what you sign’ feature, allowing users to review transaction details as an email before signing the transaction. I spoke with Dan Nikolaides, CTO of MetalCore , which is a multiplayer combined arms shooter, and is one of the first games built on Immutable zkEVM live on MainNet. The game combines high-quality traditional gaming comparable to Destiny and TitanFall with true asset ownership. Set in a dystopian alien world, the game is visually inspired by titles such as Star Wars and was designed by acclaimed science fiction and fantasy artist Stephan Martiniere — best known for his work on Star Wars, Tron: Legacy, and Star Trek.
