Let’s get a little technical today and do a deep dive into Ethereum and other blockchains. This was an educational discussion with Amir Forouzani, Co-founder & CEO, of Puffer Labs . The world, perhaps the US, is finally waking up to the power and potential of DeFi or decentralized finance. We are beginning to see what I termed in 2017 as the “Tokenization of all Assets” is starting to take shape. Now renamed RWA or Real-World Assets, it is leveraging blockchain technology to tokenize any asset, be it tangible or intangible. One of the impediments in this space has been regulatory, another purely technology. Today we will focus on the technological aspect of how Ethereum, the world’s first blockchain dedicated to smart contracts, and a platform for being the world’s computer, enables this. There are some concerns with Ethereum, which we hope to delineate here today with Amir, and some solutions, including Puffer’s product, UniFi. While Puffer is broadly recognized as a Liquid Restaking Protocol, the company has rapidly evolved into a leading innovator in Ethereum’s decentralized infrastructure. Since closing its $18 million Series A round in April 2024, Puffer has developed a clear mandate to unify the Ethereum ecosystem, addressing the longstanding fragmentation of the Ethereum network, which has been exacerbated by the ongoing proliferation of Layer 2 solutions. One of Puffer’s signature solutions, UniFi, is a based rollup to Ethereum set to transform the L2 landscape. UniFi is low-cost, capable of sub-second transactions, and allows asset withdrawal from L2 (UniFi) to L1 (Ethereum) within a minute, which is multitudes faster than any existing rollups. Did you know that if you are a holder of digital assets, you can take a loan out against those tokens? Ledn is a company that offers this service. I met with Mauricio Di Bartolomeo, Co-Founder and CSO of Ledn for a dynamic conversation about how this works. More about the company from CoinDesk: Cryptocurrency lending company Ledn is offering customers crypto-backed loans where all the assets remain locked up with a qualified custodian, as the company adapts its centralized finance approach to a post-FTX world. Ledn has done a brisk trade in standard loans to date, where bitcoin (BTC) posted as collateral can be further lent out to subsidize the loan. The firm has processed some $635 million of retail loans backed by Bitcoin, and over $4 billion on the institutional side. “The collateral must be held in custody, and that will always be a qualified custodian, whether that is with BitGo, or one of our banking or credit fund partners,” said Ledn co-founder Mauricio Di Bartolomeo in an interview. “This is the first time this type of loan, which is done through a centralized entity that can offer 24 hour disbursements, is being offered outside the U.S. to international customers.” Send us a text Many more amazing technology episodes to come! From Ledger: Web3 is all about digital freedom. But with freedom comes responsibility. Put simply, a crypto wallet is an interface that allows you to access and manage your funds on a blockchain. It acts as a sort of control panel, showing you exactly how much crypto you have. Plus, it allows you to communicate with the blockchain, sending and receiving valuable digital assets. You might say that your crypto wallet is the bridge between you and your crypto funds on the blockchain. However, despite the name, a crypto wallet does not contain your coins or tokens – those stay on the blockchain itself. Rather, its purpose is to secure the all-important private keys that allow you to access your blockchain address, and everything stored there. I was delighted to have Gerald Heydenreich, Founder of EtherMail . In case you have not heard, interactions with NFTs, cryptocurrency, and all things blockchain can be a bit painful to control. At Quantum World Congress, I met with Dr. Kristin Milchanowski who is the Global Quantum Leader for EY to discuss what the landscape of quantum is today. The way Kristin sees this space, is that she recognizes that not everyone can afford to invest in experimental quantum hardware. Their broader goal is to democratize quantum, and EY has been testing and curating an ecosystem of vendors who are entering the market in droves — just in the last two years they have seen 800 new vendors come through. A client can work with EY and have access to the very best in all these disciplines without spending a lot of money, because they have already done the trial and error. As EY Global Innovation Quantum Leader, she focuses her time and energy on quantum research projects including portfolio optimization, anomaly detection, sustainable energy demand planning, and DNA sequencing and drug discovery, as well as the more defensive cybersecurity efforts. Today, their team really focuses on quantum sensing since it’s on a “now” time horizon – this is advanced sensor technology that yields extreme accuracy for a wide range of applications, from developing more reliable geolocation systems, more accurate medical diagnostic imaging and safer autonomous vehicles. Today I got into it with Jonathan Taplin, Director Emeritus, Annenberg Innovation Lab at USC (University of Southern California) . He and I have pretty different perspectives on AI, blockchain, and technology in general and where it is taking us as a society. Jonathan was the founder and first director of USC Annenberg’s Innovation Lab. Long before that, he managed tours for Bob Dylan and the Band; produced movies, among them Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets; became the VP for media mergers and acquisitions at Merrill Lynch; created a pioneering video-on-demand service; and is now chairman of the Americana Music Foundation. Taplin wrote one of the earliest tech-critical books, MOVE FAST AND BREAK THINGS, in 2017. Now he is back with another incisive assessment of Silicon Valley. In THE END OF REALITY: How Four Billionaires are Selling a Fantasy Future of The Metaverse, Mars, and Crypto (September 5, 2023), Taplin explains how tech billionaires Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Marc Andreesen are distracting us from the very real problems facing the world today—income inequality, climate change, and failing democracy—with schemes that are totally divorced from reality: the metaverse, cryptocurrency, space travel, and transhumanism. Taplin provides perceptive insight into the personal backgrounds and cultural power of these billionaires and shows how their tech monopolies have brought middle-class wage stagnation, the hollowing out of many American towns, a radical increase in income inequality, and unbounded public acrimony. Meanwhile, the enormous amount of taxpayer money to be funneled into the dystopian ventures of “The Four,” the benefits of which will accrue to the elite, exacerbates these disturbing trends. Today, I spoke with Karn Saroya, Co-founder and CEO, at Re . This is an area that I was very interested in learning more about as the company Re is essentially a 'decentralized Lloyds of London'. Reinsurance transfers the risk from one insurance company to another to reduce the likelihood of a large payout. The reinsurer will receive a cut of the insurance premiums but will also bear a portion of the losses when a claim is made. Built on the Avalanche blockchain, Re enables reinsurance brokers to bring business to clients via the protocol. Distributed syndicates on the protocol will be able to underwrite the claims. Syndicates can earn yield in return for supplying capital. Members will also be able to earn yield by supplying capital to an index of insurance programs across a range of industries. Quantum is the next great emerging technology that few are really talking about, until now. Today we spoke with Hrant Gharibyan, Co-founder & CEO at BlueQubit. He has focused on a number of different areas including the model of traversable wormholes in holography to develop a new kind of teleportation protocol. Yes, we talked about wormholes. He named this protocol the teleportation by size protocol and wrote a paper on Quantum Gravity in the Lab. Experimental realizations of this protocol on a superconducting quantum computer and ion trap quantum devices can probe many interesting features of Einstein’s gravity, such as the existence of wormholes and the scrambling of information in black holes. BlueQubit is a California-based startup specializing in crafting GPU- accelerated quantum infrastructure and QC platform tailored for hybrid classical-quantum algorithms. As its co-founder and CEO, Hrant Gharibyan plays a pivotal role in guiding its scientific innovations and fostering strategic partnerships. Today we focus on AI and jobs, especially with the Journey of Leadership. A new McKinsey survey cites that nearly all employees (91%) report using generative AI in their work and the vast majority are enthusiastic about it. This is a significant change from a survey they conducted six months earlier when 70% of employees self-identified as non-users. Dana is the global cohead and European leader of McKinsey’s, People & Organizational Performance Practice. She is co-author of the book, The Journey of Leadership: How CEOs Learn to Lead from the Inside Out Key findings of the survey include: 1. Nine in 10 employees surveyed believe the tools could positively impact their work experience and most believe gen AI will help with a range of skills, from critical thinking to creativity. 2. Early adopters prioritize the human side of gen AI more than other companies and focus heavily on upskilling and reskilling as a crucial part of their talent strategies. 3. 40% of early adopters say their organizations provide extensive support to encourage employee adoption, compared to 9% of experimenters. In this rapidly changing environment, a human touch can ensure that technology enhances, not diminishes, the workplace experience.
