Studies: Omicron less severe as it mostly avoids attacking lungs
Series of experiments on mice, hamsters all reach same conclusion that new coronavirus strain mainly manifests in upper airway, causing fewer breathing problems

A series of recently published studies found the Omicron variant may be less severe than other coronavirus strains because of the way it attacks the lungs, according to Friday reports.
Studies on mice and hamsters found that Omicron produced less damaging infections to the lungs, and instead was limited largely to the nose, throat, and windpipe, The New York Times reported.
Previous variants would cause scarring in the lungs and serious breathing difficulty.
“It’s fair to say that the idea of a disease that manifests itself primarily in the upper respiratory system is emerging,” said Roland Eils, a computational biologist at the Berlin Institute of Health who has studied how coronaviruses infect the airway.
Ravindra Gupta, a leading variant researcher at Cambridge University and an author of one of the studies, told Insider that Omicron “is actually doing its own thing in many ways. The biology of the virus is not the same as it was before. It’s almost a new thing.”

One of the studies found that Omicron levels in the lungs were one-tenth or less of the level of other variants.
Several experiments published in recent days all pointed to the conclusion that Omicron is milder than Delta and other earlier versions of the virus, in line with real-world data.
The studies were posted online in preprint form, meaning they have yet to be reviewed by other scientists and be published in scientific journals.

Omicron was first identified in South Africa and Botswana in late November. It quickly became the dominant strain in South Africa, causing an explosion of infections with a peak of about 26,000 daily cases recorded by mid-December, according to official statistics.
The variant is currently present in more than 100 countries, according to the World Health Organization, and affects vaccinated people as well as those who have already had coronavirus.
Many studies suggest Omicron, now the dominant strain in some countries, carries a reduced risk of being admitted to hospital, but the WHO still urged caution.
“The overall risk related to the new variant of concern Omicron remains very high,” the United Nations health agency said.

S. Korea's disgraced ex-president Park freed after nearly 5 years in prison

Former South Korean President Park Geun-hye was released from prison on Friday nearly five years after being convicted of corruption, fueling debate over whether she would play any role ahead of a March presidential election.
Park, 69, was the country's first democratically elected leader to be thrown out of office when the Constitutional Court upheld a parliament vote in 2017 to impeach her over a scandal that also led to the imprisonment of the chiefs of two conglomerates, Samsung and Lotte.
South Korea's top court in January upheld a 20-year prison sentence imposed after Park was found guilty of colluding with a friend, who is also in jail, to receive tens of billions of won from the companies, mostly to fund her friend's family and non-profit foundations.
President Moon Jae-in granted a special pardon to Park last week, citing her deteriorating health and expressing hope to "overcome unfortunate past history and promote national unity."
Broadcasters showed Park leaving a Seoul hospital, where she had stayed since last month for medical treatment, after correction officials delivered a letter of pardon at midnight.

She did not comment but her lawyer has said Park, the daughter of a former military ruler, had offered an apology for causing public concern and thanked Moon for making a "tough decision."
Park's release comes as her old party, the main opposition conservative People Power Party, and Moon's Democratic Party are in a tight presidential race.
Her imprisonment divided the country, with right-wing, pro-Park groups staging weekly rallies to denounce Moon and his policies and call for Park's release, until COVID-19 distancing rules stifled the rallies last year.
Hundreds of Park's supporters braved freezing temperatures to flock to the hospital where she was staying late on Thursday to celebrate her release, with more than 1,000 bouquets of flowers arriving.
About 200 people held a protest in downtown Seoul against her release, the Yonhap news agency reported.
It was not clear if Park would resume any political activity but she said in a memoir released on Thursday that her conviction was politically motivated and she expressed hopes to "meet the people again one day."
People Power's presidential candidate Yoon Suk-yeol, who investigated the Park scandal as prosecutor-general, said on Friday he had done his job as a public servant, adding he would like to visit Park when her health improved.

US President Joe Biden and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Thursday exchanged warnings over Ukraine but conveyed some optimism that upcoming diplomatic talks in January could help ease spiraling tensions.
In a 50-minute call, their second conversation this month, Biden said he needed to see Russia de-escalate its military build-up near Ukraine, while Putin said sanctions threatened by Washington and allies could lead to a rupture in ties. The call was requested by Putin.
"President Biden reiterated that substantive progress in these dialogs can occur only in an environment of de-escalation rather than escalation," said White House press secretary Jen Psaki.

Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said the call created a "good backdrop" for future talks.
The leaders' exchange set the stage for lower-level engagement between the countries, including a Jan. 9/10 US-Russia security meeting, followed by a Russia-NATO session on Jan. 12, and a broader conference including Moscow, Washington and other European countries slated for Jan. 13.

Despite the talk of diplomacy, the tone of the call was described by officials on both sides as "serious." And neither side detailed significant progress towards a resolution.
For his part, Biden reiterated his threat of unprecedented sanctions if Russia chose to invade Ukraine.
"Biden laid out two paths," including diplomacy, said a senior administration official.
"The other is a path that is more focused on deterrence, including serious costs and consequences should Russia choose to proceed with a further invasion of Ukraine."
Aides have said the possibilities include measures that would effectively disconnect Russia from the global economic and financial system, while further arming the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the European military alliance.
Ushakov said Putin "immediately responded" that any sanctions now or later "could lead to a complete breakdown in ties between our countries."
He added: "Our president also mentioned that it would be a mistake that our descendants would see as a huge error."
Moscow has alarmed the West by massing tens of thousands of troops near its border with Ukraine in the past two months, following its seizure of Ukraine's Crimea peninsula in 2014 and its backing of separatists fighting in eastern Ukraine.
Russia denies planning to attack Ukraine and says it has the right to move its troops on its own soil as it likes.
Moscow, worried by what it says is the West's re-arming of Ukraine, has said it wants legally-binding guarantees NATO will not expand further eastwards, and that certain offensive weapons will not be deployed to Ukraine or other neighboring countries.
US concerns have not ebbed in recent weeks, according to a senior Biden administration official, despite a report over the weekend that Russia would be pulling back about 10,000 troops from its border with Ukraine. Other officials said they have seen little evidence Russia is pulling back from the border.

WASHINGTON – The US is “very pleased” with the meeting between Defense Minister Benny Gantz and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas at Gantz’s home, State Department Spokesperson Ned Price tweeted on Wednesday, adding: “We hope confidence-building measures discussed will accelerate momentum to further advance freedom, security and prosperity for Palestinians and Israelis alike in 2022.”
Gantz promised a NIS 100 million loan and legal status for 9,500 Palestinians during the rare meeting. “Only those who are responsible for sending soldiers into battle know how deeply the obligation to prevent it runs,” Gantz tweeted after the late Tuesday parley in his Rosh Ha’ayin home. “This is how I have always acted, and this is how I will continue to act. We discussed the implementation of economic and civilian measures, and emphasized the importance of deepening security coordination and preventing terror and violence for the well-being of both Israelis and Palestinians.”
The Rosh Ha’ayin meeting took place amid an escalation of violence in the West Bank and concern about renewed Gaza violence. Palestinians in Gaza shot and lightly wounded a 33-year-old military contractor who was doing maintenance work on the security barrier along the Gaza border on Wednesday. The IDF targeted a number of Hamas posts in Gaza in response.

PARIS — The number of COVID-19 cases spiraled by more than a half across the world this week, while pandemic-linked deaths dropped nine percent.
Here is the global state of play from an AFP database:
1.1 million daily cases
The average number of new daily coronavirus cases passed the symbolic one million mark to 1.18 million, a 57 percent increase over the week before.
The Europe region accounted for 54 percent of the cases, recording 4,490,612 over the week. The United States and Canada zone provided another 32 percent, with 2,636,831 cases.

Flare-ups in Latin America, Oceania
The main flare-ups at a regional level took place in Oceania and Latin America and the Caribbean, where they more than doubled — by 157 percent and 138 percent, respectively.
There was also a big increase of 92 percent in cases in the United States/Canada zone. The number of infections increased in Europe by 47 percent and in the Middle East by 37 percent. Cases in Africa, where the highly contagious Omicron variant was first detected, increased by just eight percent.

Asia bucked the world trend with its infection numbers down two percent.
Record cases
Some 30 countries from all corners of the world struck record weekly infection rates.
They include the countries with the highest number of infections per person, led by Denmark with 1,907 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, Ireland (1,784), Cyprus (1,497), the United Kingdom (1,441) and France (1,260).

Deaths down
At a global level the number of COVID-linked deaths dropped nine percent to 6,330 on average per day.
Europe accounted for more than half, or 53 percent of the deaths, with 23,324 people succumbing over the past week. The United States and Canada made up 24 percent, or 10,433, of the fatalities.
The countries reporting the highest death rates in proportion to their population were Trinidad and Tobago with 12.08 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, Georgia (11.76), Hungary (8.25), Poland (7.85) and Croatia (7.65).
