Putin laments Soviet collapse as demise of 'historical Russia'

President Vladimir Putin has lamented the collapse of the Soviet Union three decades ago as the demise of what he called "historical Russia" and said the economic crisis that followed was so bad he was forced to moonlight as a taxi driver.
Putin's comments, released by state TV on Sunday, are likely to further fuel speculation about his foreign policy intentions among critics, who accuse him of planning to recreate the Soviet Union and of contemplating an attack on Ukraine, a notion the Kremlin has dismissed as fear-mongering.
"It was a disintegration of historical Russia under the name of the Soviet Union," Putin said of the 1991 breakup, in comments aired on Sunday as part of a documentary film called "Russia. New History", the RIA state news agency reported.
"We turned into a completely different country. And what had been built up over 1,000 years was largely lost," said Putin, saying 25 million Russian people in newly independent countries suddenly found themselves cut off from Russia, part of what he called "a major humanitarian tragedy".
Putin also described for the first time how he was affected personally by the tough economic times that followed the Soviet collapse, when Russia suffered double-digit inflation.

"Sometimes (I) had to moonlight and drive a taxi. It is unpleasant to talk about this but, unfortunately, this also took place," the president said.
Putin, who served in the Soviet-era KGB, has previously described the collapse of the Soviet Union, which was ruled from Moscow, as the "greatest geopolitical catastrophe" of the 20th century, but his new comments show how he viewed it specifically as a setback for Russian power.
Ukraine was one of 15 Soviet republics and Putin used a lengthy article published on the Kremlin website this year to set out why he believed Russia's southern neighbor and its people were an integral part of Russian history and culture. This view is rejected by Kyiv as a politically motivated and over-simplified version of history.
The West has accused Russia of massing tens of thousands of troops near Ukraine in preparation for a possible attack as soon as January. The Group of Seven wealthy democracies warned Moscow on Sunday of massive consequences and severe costs if it attacked Ukraine.
The Kremlin has said Russia has no plans to launch a fresh attack on Ukraine and that the West appears to have convinced itself of Moscow's aggressive intentions based on what it calls false Western media stories.
Russia annexed Ukraine's Crimea region in 2014 and has backed separatists who took control of a swath of eastern Ukraine that same year and who continue to fight Ukrainian government forces.

US President Joe Biden on Saturday said he told Russian President Vladimir Putin that Russia would pay "a terrible price" and face devastating economic consequences if it invaded Ukraine.
Biden told reporters the possibility of sending US ground combat troops to Ukraine in the event of a Russian invasion was "never on the table," although the United States and NATO would be required to send in more forces to eastern flank NATO countries to beef up their defenses.
"I made it absolutely clear to President Putin … that if he moves on Ukraine, the economic consequences for his economy are going to be devastating, devastating," he said after remarks about the deadly tornadoes that hit the United States on Friday.

Biden, who spoke with Putin by telephone for two hours last week, said he had made clear to the Russian leader that Russia's standing in the world would change "markedly" in the event of an incursion into Ukraine.

Foreign ministers from the Group of Seven richest democracies on Saturday sent a similar message to Moscow after a meeting in Liverpool, warning of dire consequences for any incursion and urging Moscow to return to the negotiating table.
G7 finance ministers are meeting virtually on Monday to review economic concerns, including inflation, but will also touch on potential sanctions against Russia if it moves against Ukraine, officials said.
Ukraine has accused Russia of massing tens of thousands of troops in preparation for a possible large-scale military offensive.
Russia denies planning any attack and accuses Ukraine and the United States of destabilizing behavior, and has said it needs security guarantees for its own protection.
Biden last week promised Central European NATO members more military support amid growing concern over the buildup, which countries near Russia's border worry could result in a similar outcome as Russia's 2014 annexation of the Crimea region of Ukraine, Lithuania's presidential adviser said.

The Ever Given attempted to pilot the Suez Canal for the first time since it got stuck in the waterway, maritime tracker MarineTraffic's mapping data showed on Sunday.
The Ever Given began to transit the second half of the canal at around 10:30 Egypt time, departing from the Great Bitter Lake at the center of the canal.
The vessel passed the point that it had run aground the previous transversal earlier in the day without incident, and entered the Great Bitter Lake to wait its turn to transit.
The reported destination of the container vessel is Rotterdam, Netherlands. According to Bloomberg, on Wednesday the vessel was almost fully loaded, "sitting in the water just shy of its maximum 16-meter draft."
TheEver Given, one of the world's largest container ships, got jammed across the canal on March 23 and remained stuck for six days, stopping traffic in both directions.
Egyptian authorities held the ship and the crew for weeks over claims that the jam had cost the Suez Canal Authority almost $916 million. According to the BBC, the accident cost global trade almost $10 billion.

Defense Min. Benny Gantz presents Iran attack timeline to US officials

Defense Minister Benny Gantz updated American officials that he has set a deadline for when the IDF will need to complete preparations for an attack against Iran.
The Americans did not voice opposition to the Israeli preparations when presented with the date by Gantz on Thursday, a senior diplomatic source said the following day.
“There was no veto,” the source said.
The IDF has intensified planning for an attack against its arch enemy. Last week, American sources revealed that Austin and Gantz were expected to discuss joint military preparations, and a report on Kan said that the IDF was planning a massive mock strike aerial drill for this summer.
Gantz met with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Thursday. The conversations focused mainly on Iran and its continued pursuit of nuclear capability, but some of the US officials also brought up Israeli settlement activity and their concern that building in the West Bank will block a future two-state solution.

Jerusalem consulted with Washington on two previous strikes on Iran: one in June against a facility producing centrifuges in Karaj, and another on a missile production site outside Tehran, The New York Times reported.
US President Joe Biden asked his National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan two months ago to review plans to attack Iran if diplomatic efforts fail, as well as the possibilities for increasing sanctions, according to the Times.
That leak comes as the US and Israel are increasingly at odds in their evaluation of the Iranian threat. Israeli officials continue to be deeply concerned that in the recently resumed negotiations in Vienna, Washington will seek an interim deal lifting sanctions on Tehran while insufficiently restricting its nuclear program.
Blinken spoke with Foreign Minister Yair Lapid on Friday.
According to the State Department, they discussed topics “including the enduring importance of the US-Israel bilateral relationship, Israeli-Palestinian issues, and regional developments, such as our shared conviction that Iran must not be allowed to acquire a nuclear weapon.”
According to the Foreign Ministry, Lapid told Blinken that “even if there is a return to negotiations, sanctions on Iran must not be lifted. The money the Iranians will receive will reach our doorstep in the form of terrorism and missiles.”
The conversation was “warm, productive and open,” Israel’s MFA said in a readout, and included topics such as “joint efforts to stop Iran from becoming a nuclear threshold state, Minister Lapid’s visit to Cairo, the arrival of new US Ambassador to Israel Tom Nides, and expanding the circle of peace.”
State Department Spokesperson Ned Price commented on Thursday on US-Israel discussions of alternative ways to counter the Iranian nuclear threat if negotiations in Vienna collapse.
“I wouldn’t want to speak to what we might be contemplating if the path to diplomacy toward a mutual return to compliance isn’t viable in the near term,” Price said. “But we are discussing those alternatives. We are discussing those options with our close partners, with our close allies, and that includes with the Israelis. We have already had good discussions with the Israelis about the path forward, and how we can work together to ensure that Iran is never able to acquire a nuclear weapon.”
Gantz addressed the Israel American Council summit in Miami on Friday, saying that Iran is a great threat to Israel but first and foremost to the world.
“This is why the international community, with US leadership, must stand together and act forcefully against Iran’s hegemonic aspirations and nuclear program and restore stability for the sake of global peace,” he said.
The consultations in Washington were “excellent,” the defense minister said, and they included ways to ensure Israel’s qualitative military edge in the Middle East.

Gantz said he spoke with the Americans about how to keep the pressure on Iran with the aim of keeping them away from a nuclear capability, and to take advantage of Iranian vulnerabilities – particularly economic – that could be used to persuade them to suspend nuclear activity.
His impression from the meetings in Washington was that the fate of the negotiations in Vienna would be determined in the near future. “I think that in the coming weeks we will know where we stand,” Gantz said.

Shira Silkoff)

Outrage was sparked in Iran after the government proposed a law in November that would ban pets in the country.
The law, named Protection of the Public's Rights Against Animals, was proposed by 75 hardliner legislators and introduced in November, described people living with animals as a "destructive social problem," and bans "importing, raising, assisting in the breeding of, breeding, buying or selling, transporting, driving or walking, and keeping in the home wild, exotic, harmful and dangerous animals," according to AFP. However, the definition of "harmful and dangerous animals" does not strictly cover animals typically deemed as such.
According to the AFP, the ban would affect "crocodiles, turtles, snakes, lizards, cats, mice, rabbits, dogs and other unclean animals as well as monkeys."

Those punished by this ban, if it passes into law, would face a fine said to be equivalent to 10-30 times the minimum monthly working wage, loss of the animal and, for three months, the vehicles used to transport it, according to AFP.
So why is Iran proposing this ban?

According to Iranian parliamentarian Mohammad-Taghi Naghdali, it has to do with danger.
Speaking to the Didban-e Iran news website, Naghdali said that the law was due to the danger of dogs. Dogs, he said, can cause nuisance and harm" to people, and said a dog recently killed children in a park in the country's capital.
Indeed, dogs are something many in Iran have focused on for a while, and are said to be the main concern behind the bill.

The city of Tehran banned animals from public spaces after a report in July in the newspaper
Kayhan
called dog-walking a "major problem," according to
Iran International.
The idea itself could be said to be rooted in Islamic law, where dogs are thought of as being impure. Indeed, other Muslim countries have restrictions against canine companions.
In Saudi Arabia, for example, those who wish to bring pets need to provide a number of documents and permits, but dogs can only be brought in if they are considered hunting dogs, guard dogs or seeing-eye dogs, and many breeds considered dangerous and aggressive such as Pit Bulls and Rottweilers can never enter the country "under any circumstances," according to the Saudi Embassy in the US website.
However, within Iran, dogs have been common for years in certain areas, specifically in farms and in more rural parts of the country. However, they have become more popular as pets in recent years.
According to RadioFreeEurope, this is because they have become a sign of affluence.
But they have always been controversial since 1979 when the Islamic Revolution overthrew the shah and established the current theocratic government. In the decades since, owning dogs has been considered "morally depraved" and a problematic sign of Westernization. In July, Iranian chief prosecutor Mohammad Jafar Montazeri said that loving dogs is part of the "degenerate culture of the West," and "should not be part of Muslims' lives," according to RadioFreeEurope.
Dogs, in particular, have faced cruel fates in Iran in the past, with images that circulated on social media in recent years depicting stray dogs dying in agony or brutally beaten by the authorities, something that had actually sparked protests in 2019, according to RadioFreeEurope.
"Dogs are our best friends, maybe they don't want friends?" commented Gadi Vinter, spokesperson for the Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Israel (SPCA) in response to the proposed law. "But here in Israel, there are lots of people, religious people, who have problems with dogs."
Indeed, even in the Jewish state, there are those that take issue with dogs, especially among the haredi community, which hold that dogs are religiously unclean.
In 2019, dozens of rabbis from the city of Elad, including Chief Rabbi Mordechai Malka, signed an edict declaring that all dogs are inherently bad and keeping them will make one accursed.
“We have heard and have seen that lately, a serious phenomenon has spread in our city Elad, in which young boys and children walk around publicly with dogs. This is strictly forbidden. As explained in the Talmud and by the Rambam, anyone raising a dog is accursed,” the anti-canine edict states.
Elad was not the only city whose rabbis spoke out against man's best friend.
“I do not find any grounds for permitting any dog whatsoever in any manner,” stated Holon's Rabbi Avraham Yosef.
This is despite Tel Aviv being thought of by many as the most dog-friendly city in the world.

But while Iran's ban against dogs may be rooted in decades of political issues and in Islamic law, banning other pets, especially cats, is another story.
Unlike dogs and pigs, cats have been typically been beloved in the Muslim world. In fact, according to some hadiths, the prophet Muhammad actually outlawed killing or persecuting cats.
The feline friends are present in Muslim countries all over the world, with a spokesperson for Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan even saying in 2020 that cats are welcome in all of the country's mosques.
Even in Iran, cats are far from a rare sight in rural and urban areas alike. However, this new law seeks to change even that.
Consequently, outrage was sparked online, criticizing this ban to outlaw beloved feline friends for being supposedly "dangerous."
"How many times have cats sought to devour you so that you consider them wild, harmful and dangerous?" Iranian journalist Yeganeh Khodami said on Twitter, according to AFP.
Another social media user joked that they would rename their kitten "Criminal" in response to the law, according to AFP.
Many nations around the world have some laws restricting cat ownership, such as making them need to be kept indoors at all times, but banning them outright is nearly unheard of.
Further, even domesticated cats are fully capable of living in the wild, with many countries around the world having large feral cat populations.
Israel, for example, has, according to some estimates, a feral cat population of over two million.
Iran, too, is no exception, especially in Tehran, where stray cats are said to be frequently present.
But what this proposed ban means for the fates of these felines remains uncertain.

Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Air Force commander Amir Ali Hajizadeh praised the country's advances in a speech reported this weekend. He emphasized that Iran’s infrastructure had advanced and the country has widespread potential now. He said Iran can be a good example for other countries and pointed to Iran’s missile and drone program. In the last year, Iran’s drones have received greater attention. They have threatened US forces in Iraq and Syria as well as Israel and Gulf states.
Iran’s IRGC has immense power and sway in Iran’s strategy and also its development of new weapon systems. In many cases, it is tasked with utilizing drones and missiles in new ways. These methods usually involve threats across the region and trafficking technology to groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis and others.
He said Iran can become one of the richest countries in the world through appropriate “models.” This refers to Iran’s regime that blends religious extremism with its own unique strategy. “We can prove to everyone that religious and revolutionary management not only meets the needs of the people but can also be a good example for other countries. It’s as if our advances in some areas, such as missiles and drones, owe much to this approach.”

While Iran appeared to be facing malaise among the youth over the last decade, especially as protests have rocked part of the country, his message was that new technologies could be developed through investing in youth organizations.
Brig.-Gen. Mohammad Reza Hassani-Ahangar of Imam Hussein University, another speaker at the event that Hajizadeh attended, praised the aerospace sector for advancing Iran’s power and “honor.” He said that the “deterrent power of Islamic Iran today has made our enemies not dare to invade our country.”

He said that universities play a major role in Iran’s success. “We see the role of universities in advancing the goals and authority of the country in the field of science and technology, adding: universities, seminaries, research centers, professors and students should identify their role in civilization and conduct detailed research.”
His point is that the university can help train the next officers of the IRGC and also the next technicians in the drone and missile programs. The missile program is essential for Iran if it ever wants to build a long-range missile capable of delivering a nuclear weapon.

One of Iran’s leading pro-government media outlets called Israeli efforts surrounding the Vienna talks “futile,” an apparent reference to Iranian regime optimism.
“The Zionists, who had recently called for a halt to the talks with their American counterpart and were trying to disrupt the talks by spreading false news about Iran’s nuclear activities, remained silent,” Fars News said.
Iran has also paid close attention to Defense Minister Benny Gantz’s trip to the US. “The Israeli minister of war, while repeating baseless claims against Iran and the threat he poses to the regime, claimed that Tel Aviv was preparing for any scenario. In a conversation with the US secretary of state, the Israeli foreign minister also demanded that the sanctions against Iran not be lifted.”
Tehran says Israel is trying to “obstruct” the process and kill the deal.
“It should be noted that US officials, on the one hand, have imposed new sanctions on Iran during the negotiations, and are consulting with [Israel] regime officials, who have spared no effort to destroy [the Iran deal].” Iran’s report says European powers coming to Vienna had been considered tough on Iran, but that upon re-entering this round of talks they have “accepted the facts in the face of Iranian pragmatism.”

“The negotiators were able to resolve some of the misunderstandings we encountered at the end of last week and began practical work,” Russia’s envoy to Vienna said in response to a statement from the senior EU official.
Iran’s regime appears to believe the three European states that are present are moving closer to the Iranian position. “Consultations were held in Vienna on Friday, December 10, at various levels in the two areas of lifting sanctions and nuclear issues, and Ali Bagheri met with the Russian representative and Austrian foreign minister.”
Iran is pushing a new narrative this week, after being non-plussed a week ago about the talks. Now it sees the possibility for a good and serious agreement, the report says.

“It is worth mentioning that considering these circumstances, it can be said that it is the other side that has backed down from its demands, not Iran.” Iran believes the EU wants to move faster with the talks, and it sees recent statements in Europe as well as recent talks with Russia as key to moving things forward.
In essence, Iran believes the talks may outflank Israeli warnings, and hopes the US will call what it sees as Israel’s bluff.

Hassan Yusef

The results of the first phase of the Palestinian municipal elections in the West Bank showed that independent lists won 70% of the seats.
The ruling Fatah faction declared victory, while Hamas said that some of its supporters gained significant achievements.
Hamas officially boycotted the elections and did not allow them to be held in the Gaza Strip.

Despite the boycott, Hamas-affiliated candidates contested the elections and won seats in several councils.
Some Palestinians described the results as a “major defeat” for Fatah.

The elections, the first of their kind since 2017, took place on Saturday in 154 villages and towns in the rural area of the West Bank. Electoral lists in 162 areas won by acclamation because each one had only one sole slate.
Fatah officials said that many of their supporters and members ran on an independent ticket or as part of family slates. They argued that this was enough to back up their claim that Fatah won the vote.
The final voter turnout percentage of the elections reached 66% out of 405,687 eligible voters, said Hanna Nasser, Chairman of the Palestinian Central Elections Commission (CEC).

The total number of voters reached 268,318, Nasser said during a press conference in El-Bireh, the twin city of Ramallah.
The CEC said that the results demonstrate that independent lists won 70.86% of the total contested council seats of 1,503, whereas partisan lists got 29.14% of seats.
The second phase of the elections will take place in 66 municipal councils on March 26, 2022.
Several Fatah officials and candidates, who ran under the banner “Construction and Liberation,” were quick to declare victory after the announcement of the results.
“This is a landslide victory for Fatah,” said Fatah activist Omar al-Haj. “The results of the local elections show that Fatah and the Palestinian Authority leadership enjoy the confidence and support of a majority of our people.”
A statement by Fatah described the results as a “referendum on [Fatah’s] democratic and unifying strategy, and a renewal of the confidence of our people in Fatah and its leadership, first and foremost President Mahmoud Abbas.”
Eyad Jarad, a Fatah leader from the northern West Bank city of Tulkarm claimed that his faction won all the council seats in the area.
“This is a democratic victory,” Jarad said in an interview with a local radio station. “The elections are part of the Palestinian national struggle. The elections are a national wedding.”
Shadi Mtour, a senior Fatah official from east Jerusalem, described the results of the municipal elections as a “blow to all those who predicted that this would be the end of Fatah and its national enterprise.”
The Palestinians, Mtour said, have “renewed their confidence in Fatah, which places the Palestinians at the top of its priorities and fights only with the occupation.”
Some Palestinians, however, said that the results showed that Fatah continues to suffer from deep divisions.
They pointed out that several Fatah members chose to run as part of independent or family lists because they were unhappy with the composition of the faction’s official electoral lists.
“Fatah has not learned from its previous mistakes,” said a Palestinian political analyst from Ramallah. “If I were a member of Fatah, I wouldn’t be celebrating today. Fatah lost the 2006 parliamentary elections because of internal disputes that led some of its members to run outside the faction’s official list.”
Hussein Abu Kweik, a senior Hamas official in the West Bank, said that opposition lists and candidates scored a “landslide victory” in many places of the West Bank.
The results of the elections, Abu Kweik said, “constitute a painful blow to these responsible for security coordination [with Israel].”
He predicted that the PA would not rush to hold any elections in the near future to “avoid additional defeats.”
Abu Kwiek explained that Hamas decided to officially boycott the municipal elections in protest of Abbas’s decision earlier this year to call off the general elections.
Hassan Yusef, also a senior Hamas official in the West Bank, confirmed that supporters of his group participated in the elections despite the boycott.
Yusef claimed that candidates affiliated with his groups made “remarkable” achievements in the elections.
Although Hamas boycotted the elections, it “opened the way for its members and supporters to participate in Saturday’s vote,” he disclosed.
The results of the elections show that the Palestinians have “rallied around the resistance,” Yusef said.
He claimed that a number of Fatah leaders expressed disappointment with the results and described them as a big defeat for their faction.

Iranian MP: Enmity between Zionists, Iran goes back to Purim

The enmity between Israel and Iran has a "long history," dating back to the story of Purim, an Iranian parliamentarian stated that in an interview with the Iranian Fars News Agency on Sunday.
"The Zionist regime is the sworn enemy of Iran and Iranians, and this enmity, without any connection to the ruling regime in Iran, has a long history, so that the Zionists still celebrate Purim every year on the anniversary of the brutal massacre of the Iranian people," said Zohreh Lajevardi, Tehran's representative in the Iranian parliament, also known as the Majles. "But with the victory of the revolution, this enmity became so public, so much so that a brief look at the events of the last 40 years proves well that this vicious regime is the sworn enemy of Iran and Iranians."
The Purim story took place in the Persian Empire in the city of Shushan, identified as the modern Iranian town of Shush in western Iran. The Scroll of Esther tells how Haman, a high-ranking minister in the kingdom of Ahasuerus, attempted to destroy the Jews in the Persian Empire, and how he was thwarted by Mordechai and his relative Esther, who married Ahasuerus. The exact timing and identity of the characters in the story is debated by historians.

This isn't the first time that Iranian officials and press have used the Purim story for political purposes or to spread antisemitism.
In a Fars article in 2011, the head of the Student Basij Organization in Hamedan referred to the Purim story as an "Iranian holocaust," saying the "corrupt" Esther massacred about 75,000 "innocent" Iranians. Throughout the article, the Student Basij Organization head linked Esther and Mordechai to the "Zionists" and used the terms "Zionist" and "Jew" interchangeably.
In 2017, former Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif claimed that the Book of Esther “tells of how Xerxes I (who Zarif identifies as Ahasuerus) saved Jews from a plot hatched by Haman the Agagite, which is marked on this very day [Purim].”
Iranian officials often insist that they are only anti-Zionist and have no issues with the Jewish people in general. Former Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Khomeini proclaimed: “We recognize our Jews as separate from those godless Zionists.” Jews in Iran have an official minority status and a representative in parliament. About 10,000 Jews are estimated to live in Iran, 90,000 less than lived there before the Islamic Revolution in 1979.
Lajevardi's interview with Fars on Sunday focused on her calls to combat attempts by Israel to impose restrictions on Iranian athletes in international arenas.
"One of the most valuable approaches of Iran after the Islamic Revolution has been the lack of confrontation between the athletes of the country and the athletes of the usurping Zionist regime in sports fields," said the parliamentarian in the Fars interview, stressing that, in Iran's view, "there is no foreign country called Israel."
"This evil regime has been occupying Palestine for decades and has imprisoned this free nation, and there is not a day that a man, woman or child is not killed in occupied Palestine and all these abuses take place in the absolute silence of international human rights organizations and institutions," claimed Lajevardi.
The parliamentarian stressed that "Due to the enmity that this regime has with the culture, religion and customs of Iran and Iranians, we will never recognize them at any level, including as an opponent and in sports fields that are based on chivalry, peace and tranquility."
Lajevardi called for legal action to be taken against attempts to restrict athletes who refuse to face Israeli athletes.

The Ministerial Committee for the Shin Bet decided to end security protection provided to opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu’s family on Monday, the sixth-month anniversary of his leaving office.
The ministers were briefed on Sunday morning by representatives of the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency), Mossad, police and National Security Council in the meeting, which lasted only half an hour.
“None of them saw a reason to extend the protection,” said a source present at the meeting.
The decision means that Sara Netanyahu and her sons, Yair and Avner, will no longer receive a car and driver funded by the state. When his father was prime minister, Yair infamously used his chauffeur to drive him and his friends to a strip club in Tel Aviv. The driver recorded his conversations and leaked them to the media.
The former prime minister himself was not part of the decision and will continue to be protected for 20 years, as will his family home. Removing the benefits from his family will save taxpayers NIS 300,000 a month.

Sources close to Netanyahu called the decision “political, scandalous and irresponsible,” and warned that it would permit harm to be done to the former prime minister’s wife and sons. The sources said the Shin Bet department responsible for protecting Sara Netanyahu and her sons wanted them to continue to be protected. The department denied that claim.
“Anyone with eyes sees the intensity of the incitement and threats on social media,” said a source close to Netanyahu. “The hatred for Netanyahu has made people ready to endanger his wife and kids. It is unbelievable. An unprecedented scandal. The writing is on the wall.”
Public Security Minister Omer Bar Lev, who is on the ministerial committee, said the decision was easy because all the security authorities agreed.
“I trust the Shin Bet and the police that if there will be a threat, it will be dealt with,” said Bar Lev.
Yair Netanyahu responded to Bar Lev on Twitter that when he complained of a threat to harm him, it was not dealt with properly.
The prime minister’s son also posted tweets accusing Shin Bet head Ronen Bar of being left wing because he opposed allowing the Palestinian Authority to collapse and because he graduated from Harvard University’s Wexner Israel Fellowship.
Likud MK Shlomo Karhi said the danger to the Netanyahu family from left-wing anarchists was substantial, and “if something happens to them, God forbid, the blood will be on the hands of the ministers.”
Channel 13 reported on Sunday night that the Netanyahu family was requesting that a second home be secured by the state. Currently, their home in Caesarea is protected. According to the report, they asked for the same to be done for a home they own in Jerusalem on Aza Street.
In an effort to preempt the decision about removing the bodyguards of his family, Netanyahu filed a police complaint against a political activist group for what he said was incitement to violence against them. He posted a video to Twitter on Friday in which he detailed recent threats against him, Sara and Yair.
Netanyahu highlighted a social media post from the anti-Netanyahu Crime Minister organization that read: “On Monday, as was agreed a long time ago, the security detail will be lifted and the cars will be seized from Sara Netanyahu and her two sons. Expect surprises?”
He also revealed a letter reaching his office in the past few days that read: ”Despicable Yair. We are four Israelis abroad. We will come back to the country soon to kill you and your garbage father.” The letter also went on to call Sara Netanyahu a prostitute.
“You will die soon,” it ended.

Netanyahu also showed a clip of a far-left activist addressing Yair Netanyahu during a protest saying one day he will be without a security detail, adding: “Poof, who knows [what can happen]?”
“It’s important to remember that [tourism minister Rehavam Ze’evi] was murdered only two days after his security detail was lifted,” Netanyahu said. “The writing is on the wall, we’re talking about human lives. What more needs to happen?”
He ended by calling on the Security Committee to disregard their political and personal considerations and keep the security detail on Netanyahu’s family.
“Don’t forsake the safety of my wife and children,” he said.
In response, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said that “while the people of Israel are being shown the insane waste of public funds on the needless security detail for the Netanyahu family, the bored leader of the opposition is inciting against those who are demanding to put a stop to the insanity.”

Shin Bet

Iran thinks Israeli efforts are 'futile' amid Vienna talks - analysis
Iran believes that the talks may outflank Israeli warnings and it hopes the US will call what it sees as Israel’s bluff.
