Living a life of "need" and having our happiness tied to, and predicated on, certain outcomes can leave us in a constant state of emptiness and never feeling satisfaction in our lives. "Wanting" certain things, having desire, is a reasonable state. You can desire certain situations, circumstances and tangible objects and still be fulfilled without them, therefore avoiding the void of constantly being needy.
