Gustavo is the superintendent of the Beaverton School District, the third-largest school system in Oregon. He is a nationally recognized leader who is the current president of the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents and president of AASA, the national school superintendent association with over 10,000 members. Gustavo is the 2020 National Superintendent of the Year.

Dr. Gustavo Balderas began his life as the child of migrant farm workers in the Eastern Oregon town of Nyssa and developed his love of learning and passion for education in Oregon public schools, from kindergarten through his doctoral degree in educational leadership at the University of Oregon. His passion is to ensure that school systems provide equitable access to the best public education to all students and that there are systems in place to provide this access.
Gustavo has been an educator for 34 years and is currently the proud superintendent of schools in the Beaverton School District, which serves 40,000 students. He has been a superintendent of schools in four additional school districts in California, Oregon, and Washington. Gustavo has been twice named national superintendent of the year by both AASA and NABE, the National Association for Bilingual Education, and was recently named one of the 2024 District Administration Top 100 Influencers in Education.
