The War and Treaty’s Michael and Tanya Trotter grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and Washington, DC, respectively, but both have family roots in the South. They also grew up in the musical traditions of their churches – Tanya in the Black Baptist Church and Michael in the Seventh Day Adventist Church – where they learned the power of song to move people. After becoming a father at a very young age, Michael eventually joined the armed forces and served in Iraq and Germany, where he took up songwriting as a way of dealing with his experiences there. Meanwhile Tanya embarked on a singing and acting career after a breakthrough appearance in Sister Act 2 alongside Whoopi Goldberg and Lauryn Hill. Now, after a long and sometimes traumatic journey, Michael and Tanya are married, touring, winning all sorts of awards, and set to release their fifth album together, and their fourth as The War and Treaty. Sid talks to Michael and Tanya about the new record, Plus One , as well as their collaboration with Miranda Lambert, what it was like to record at FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, and how they’re blending country, soul, gospel, and R&B. Do you let just anybody get in your ear? You gotta be careful about that! Here are some Biblical examples of letting the wrong people get in your ear: ~ Genesis 3:1-5 - "Did God really say?" ~ Esther 5:14, 6:12-14 - Haman's lame friends ~ Matthew 16:21-23 - Peter to Jesus Plus, Jezebel (who ran her husband, the king), David's wife Michael (who tried to get in his ear about dancing before the Lord), Job's friends ("curse God and die"), and of course, Delilah! And then we don't listen to the voice we need to be listening to! God's! ~ Exodus 3:9-14 - God has to get loud with Moses to get him to go to Pharaoh! Personally, I've had some wrong people try to get in my ear - like bullies, cruel teachers and bad bosses. I've also had well-meaning friends, loved ones, and romantic interests try to get in my ear with the wrong stuff! Here are some scriptures to encourage you: ~ Romans 10:17 - Faith comes by hearing ~ Galatians 5:7-8 - You were running a good race ~ Matthew 12:34 - Out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks…
It's better not to give your word than to give your word and break it. The Bible warns us over and over again not to make a vow we can't keep. It also tells us that faith without works is dead (James 2:14-26). We need to DO something to show our fruit, not just talk about it, not even just pray about it! Scriptures: Don't swear, just let your yes be yes or no, no! (Matthew 5:33-37, James 5:12, Deuteronomy 23:21-23) Don't make vows, but if you do, you better keep it! Isn't it interesting that idol worshipers aren't content just worshiping their own idols? They feel compelled to force you to worship their false idols, too. Even worse, they weaponize their idols, scheming to attack good, faithful people because they know that's the only thing they can use - the refusal to bow down and worship false idols. People who worship and weaponize idols operate in lies and schemes, because of jealousy or arrogance, to achieve power or dominance. Although the Bible instructs us to forgive others and ask for forgiveness, there are no real examples of this in the Bible. There are examples of people repenting to God but not to each other. We thought Joseph's brothers apologized, but no. As per their usual shady selves, they just told Joseph that their father said to forgive them before he died. This is the message storage companies don't want you to hear! Storage is a racket! There are four categories of stuff: 1) Stuff we can use right now (functional stuff) 2) Stuff that needs to be trashed 3) Stuff that should be given away or donated 4) Legacy stuff that will be passed down to generations As my dear friend said, "Storage is a first-world problem. We pay for storage of our ‘excess’ stuff!” We really shouldn’t be storing anything! And there's scripture to back this up. Luke 12:13-21 is the Parable of the Rich Fool!
