One of my least favorite stepfamily comments is, "Well you knew what you were signing up for." That's like telling a new mom or dad, well you knew parenting was going to be hard so I don't want to hear you complain about it.
In both situations, you do not know what to expect until you are living it out in real-time. Mostly because every situation is so unique just like every child is unique.
