According to a U.S. News + Generation Lab report , 70% of college students have struggled with mental health since starting college. Despite expressing a need for care, only 37% of survey respondents searched for mental health resources. These findings align with a recent D2L-sponsored Tyton Partners report , which found that only 50% of students are aware of key on-campus services like academic and career advising, financial aid, and mental health counseling. It's clear we’re edging closer and closer towards a student mental health crisis in the higher education world. When the goal is a university degree or diploma from a private institution, learners can bank on a long road ahead. In some cases, the path traveled is straightforward; in other cases, it’s winding with more than a few detours, U-turns and full stops. While different, what these pathways have in common, is the destination. But, what about low-income learners or those from under-served communities who are less likely to consider pursuing higher education from a private university? What can institutions do to create pathways that reduce undermatching? Counter to the old adage, the US Department of Education is looking to fix something that many argue ain't broke ... Right now, distance education is being reviewed and new regulations are being considered in the name of consumer protection. It's believed that the US Department of Education is operating under the misconception that distance education is somehow less than traditional in-person education. But, Dr. Van Davis couldn't disagree more. Distance education is high-quality, deliberately designed, accessible education. He believes that the proposed regulations would be disastrous to distance learners, educators and institutions if passed. The World Economic Forum highlighted the growing gap between the curriculum taught in traditional degree programs and the skills needed to work in today’s digital world . At the same time, enrollment in full-time degree courses continues to decline. Much has been said about micro-credentials and alternate pathways being the solution to both institutional enrollment challenges and closing the skills gap, but designing and sustaining these programs requires a different type of strategy and leadership. How can universities and colleges create noncredit courses that truly meet the practical needs of learners and employers? Welcome to another episode of Teach & Learn: A podcast for curious educators. In today’s episode, we talk educator burnout. A 2022 Gallup poll reported that K-12 teachers had the highest burnout rate in the United States, followed by college and university workers , making educators among the most burned-out groups in the country. Mindfulness has been scientifically proven to help lower stress levels and, when practiced consistently, can be an effective way to reduce educator burnout. To discuss the topic further, we welcomed Dr. Michelle C. Chatman, Associate Professor at The University of the District of Columbia and an expert in mindfulness. Dr. Chatman and Dr. Ford discussed the differences between mindfulness, mindset and contemplative approaches, why educators are burnt out now more than ever, why we should challenge internalized racism, biases and sexism in underrepresented student communities and why teachers shouldn’t underestimate what was lost during the pandemic.
