This season we’re looking at the first steps everyday people can take towards peace. And we’re kicking things off by zooming in to something direct and personal that people engage with every day: listening. How can “generous” listening contribute to peace, and what are practical ways to get started? In this episode, we explore concrete ways to have difficult conversations instead of violent reactions, and how our everyday interactions can ladder up to structural change. Naomi Boase is Tufts University’s inaugural Inclusive and Restorative Dialogues Program Director. She has provided DEI consultations and trainings in the US and abroad for over 10 years. The goal of these trainings is to increase a sense of belonging within communities and organizations. Find out more about Noami’s work here . Jonathan Tirrell is director of the Generous Listening and Dialogue Initiative at Tufts University. Trained as a developmental scientist, he studies positive youth development (PYD), seeking to understand how people become good people. Find out more about Jonathan’s work here . Disrupting Peace is a production of The World Peace Foundation. The show is produced by Bridget Conley and Emily Shaw. Engineering by Jacob Winik and Aja Simpson. Marketing and Social media by Emily Ruhm. Show artwork by Simon Fung. Special thanks to Jeremy Helton, Lisa Avery, B. Why settle for building an online store when you can set the tone and personality for an entire brand? Kevin Green’s design and content work has redefined how people expect to see and interact with brands. We talked about dialing it up way past 11, being your own editor, and ensuring that if content operations are easy enough for you, they’ll be easy enough for your authors. When pressing publish means doing a few million dollars in sales, you’d better ensure the engineering and content teams are in step. Today’s guest, Noah Gentile, has seen how massive author teams interact with content operations engineers to build workflows where collaboration is necessary and failure is not an option. There is an irony to Sanity telling you not to build your own CMS ... because that's exactly how Sanity was founded. Engineers like Espen were there at the start, but we didn't just build our own CMS—we built your CMS. We're still building it, and everything beyond CMS too.
Positive content can have a powerful impact. Mark Techson's journey to Google, to speaker, to game show host is living proof. Even in our currently unsettling times (aka the "Age of AI") there's still plenty of reason to stay enthusiastic about what we can do and what we can create. Developers love writing Markdown, everyone else? Not so much. There's an opportunity cost to storing rich text and block content as a string. It ties content to presentation in a way that's unpleasant to write and brittle to render. Knut joins the podcast to discuss when and where Markdown is acceptable and what makes Portable Text the preferred alternative.
