×In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explores the difference between the dreams of Pharoah and the dreams of Yaakov Avinu. Pharaoh dreams that he is standing above the Nile River, Yaakov dreams that Hashem is standing above him. When we dream that we are above God we go back to sleep. When we dream that God is standing above us we are obligated to fulfill the mission for which we were created.…

Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive
In this shiur, delivered at the Mevaseret Yud Tes Kislev Fabrengen, Rav Burg explains how Hashem writes down all of our Mitzvos and has incredible nachas from us. The Baal Shem Tov came down into this world to remind us that each and every Yid is the beloved child of Hashem and how He can't stop talking about even our smallest Mitzvos.…

In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explores the symmetry of the story of Yosef HaTzaddik. When Yosef truly examines his life and does the real work of being in self, not only does his own life change but the lives of his brothers change as well.
In this shiur, delivered in Shenk in Washington Heights, Rav Burg explains the inner nature of Yosef’s dreams. Far from placing himself at the center of the world, Yosef sought to unite the Shevatim by seeing through to the essence that we all share.

1:00:01In this shiur, delivered in MMY, Rav Burg explains the definition of marriage, the definition of self and how we date and get married from a deep place of self.
In this shmooze, delivered at Mevaseret Mishmar, Rav Burg explains the inner meaning of the fact that Yaakov slept on Har HaMoriah and did not learn Torah and at the same time was learning Mishnayos all night long. As we descend deeper into Golus and the truth becomes less and less clear, we discover our own voice and our own contributions to the choir of Torah shebaal Peh.…

In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explores the inner nature of the Terpahim and why Rachel stole them from Lavan. Rav Burg explains that the nature of Rachel Imeinu is to reveal that which is concealed. Warning: this shiur is very deep.
In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains the inner connection between Yaakov Avinu skipping the Beis HaMikdash and returning to it through Kefitzas HaDerech, the institution of Maariv and Har HaMoriah. When we daven in our lowest moments we can skip over the normal process and find ourselves at untold spiritual heights.…
In this shiur, delivered in the Lubat home in RBS, Rav Burg explains the darkness of Yavan. When man believes that only that which can be explained in a logical and rational fashion exists he puts himself at the center of the universe. This results in a tyrannical approach to the world. In contrast, Judaism believes that the essence of Hashem is beyond human comprehension and from the perspective of the essence all categories fall away. Darkness and light have one shared Godly essence and as a result we are able to illuminate the darkness.…
In this shmooze, delivered at the Mevaseret Thanksgiving Fabrengen, Rav Burg explains how gratitude unites every aspect of our being.

Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive
In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explains how Rivka was confused by her dual nature. On the one hand she had a part of her that was drawn to Kedusha and yet another part was drawn to Tumah. Our conflicted nature is not a bug but a feature as we learn to bring Godliness into every aspect of our lives.…
In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains the difference between the way that Avraham engaged with the world and the way Yitzchak engaged with the world. Avraham was able to have an impact even on the people of Mitzrayim but the effects were not necessarily long lasting. Yitzchak was only able to impact the Pelsihtim but the impact was eternal.…

In this shiur, delivered at Mevaseret Mishmar, Rav Burg explains how Malachim have a single minded focus. Totally present with whatever they are doing. Human beings can reach an even higher level where we can live in multiple dimensions at once.
N
Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive
In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explores the Haftorah that deals with the Isha Shunamis who did not ask Elisha for a bracha to have children despite her barren state. Only when we dare to love, when we have the deep conviction that we are enough even when we gey hurt, can we truly be alive.…
In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains (based on a Sicha from the Lubavitcher Rebbe zt"l) the true nature of Mesiras Nefesh. Anyone can sacrifice their life for a greater cause but in a certain way that can still be self serving. The ultimate sacrifice is the sacrifice of Avraham Avinu - he was ready to sacrifice himself. He was ready to destroy everything that was important to him simply because Hashem asked him to. The sacrifice of Akeidas Yitzchak blazed the trail for all Jews throughout time who have not just given up their lives but given up themselves in the service of Hashem.…
In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains how living from a deep place of soulfulness creates our reality. Hagar received messages from four or five angels when she was told that she was going to give birth to Yishmael. This is a reference to the soul itself and when we are deeply connected to our soul, we can bring ourselves into reality.…

Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive
In this shiur, delivered on zoom for oravsimcha, Rav Burg explains the Chasidic approach to the role of Malchus. On the one hand Malchus is a Mekabel, actualizing the Sefiros above it and yet paradoxically it is also rooted in the Divine Essence, completely above the Sefiros.
In this shiur, delivered at Thursday night Mishmar in Mevaseret, Rav Burg explains (based on a sicha from the Lubavitcher Rebbe) how Noach knew that the waters of the flood had receded and that it was safe for him to leave the Teiva. We can leave the Teiva when we know that we are essentially Godly (olive trees) and that we can always grow new leaves (freshly plucked). Only then can we confront the challenges of the outside world.…
In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains how Noach failed to help even one person do Teshuva because he didn't daven for them. Davening is a form of imagination. It allows us to see the world as Hashem wants it to be. So too when we daven for someone we are seeing their greatness. People are not inspired by education alone. They need to be taught by a Rebbe who davens for them. Only then will they realize their own greatness.…
In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explains why we praise the Tzaddikim when given the opportunity and why Shem and Yafes did not look at their father when he was uncovered. The way we speak about people and the way we see people has a tremendous impact on them. When we speak/see people negatively we can destroy them. When we see or speak about their beauty we reveal their inner beauty. (Note: Rav Burg asked that it be noted that he forgot to answer why we praise Tzaddikim when given the opportunity. The answer is that when we praise the Tzaddik and speak positively about him we elevate his capacity to fulfill his mission which in turn aids us in fulfilling our mission.)…
In this shiur, delivered at the Vayichan program in Yeshivat HaKotel, Rav Burg explains how we can possibly dance and be joyful during Simchas Torah this year. Some generations write their Torah in tears while others are meant to fill in those tears with ink. Our generation has the opportunity to write a Sefer Torah for those who could not finish their own.…

In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explains (based on a Torah from the Tzemach Tzedek) how we can make meaningful and lasting change. In this shiur, delivered in Darchei Binah, Rav Burg explains Reb Zusias five aspects of Teshuva and the inner symmetry of Teshuva. To realign with Hashem we must live wholeheartedly, purposefully, lovingly, oriented towards a meaningful destination and with dignity.
In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explains (based on a Sicha from the Lubavitcher Rebbe) how Hashem relates to us through various channels. Miracles overwhelm us. The natural world reveals Hashem but we remain a distinct entity. Only through Torah can we truly become one with Hashem. Through Torah we can learn the will and wisdom Hashem and at the same time contribute to the conversation.…

Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive
In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains how Moshe Rabbeinu addresses the fears of Klal Yisrael after they heard the Klalos. When we realize that we are a fundamental part of the Klal, that we each make a unique contribution and that no Jew in truth is higher than any other we gain a deep sense of being firmly planted in the ground. Armed with the knowledge that we are safe and ok we can confront the ups and downs of the upcoming year.…

Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive
In this shiur, delivered in the Lubat home in Neve Shamir, Rav Burg explains the inner nature of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. We don't just want Hashem to forgive us so we can have a good year, we want Hashem to restore us to the way things were. On Rosh Hashanah every molecule of creation returns to its source, to its purpose. We return to our mission, to the time when we saw through the veneer of this physical world and we saw Hashem. We restore Hashem to His throne and proclaim Him to be King thus fulfilling the purpose of creation.…
In this shiur, delivered at Mevaseret Mishmar, Rav Burg explains how Vidui Maaser is the true confession. Only when we know our own greatness can we acknowledge our sins with healthy guilt and not toxic shame.
N
Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive
In this shiur, the first shiur of the year in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explores the Machlokes as to when we begin to be obligated in the Mitzvah of Bikkurim. According to the Gemara it is from the time we settle Eretz Yisrael. According to the Sifri it is from when we first enter the land. Based on a Torah from the Lubavitcher Rebbe zt"l, Rav Burg explains the difference between rational and supra rationale and how they relate to gratitude.…

Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive
In this shiur, the first shiur of the year in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains how Klal Yisrael became a nation on the day that they expressed their frustration with Moshe Rabbeinu for writing a special Sefer Torah for Shevet Levi. When we take personal responsibility for our relationship with Hashem, when we own the mission of Klal Yisrael, we move from being just a family to a nation.…
N
Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive
In this shiur, delivered in Mevaseret at the first Mishmar of the year, Rav Burg speaks about Teshuva not as an accounting of our sins but as crying out for a relationship with Hashem. However, in order to do so, we must remove our garments of captivity - a surface orientated way of seeing the world. Only when we live focused on the essence can we connect to Hashem on an essential level.…

In this shiur, delivered worldwide On Tisha B'Av to the Chizzuk Mission, Rav Burg explores the relationship between Shlomo HaMelech, Yirmiyahu and Moshe Rabbeinu. Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive
In this shiur, delivered on Tisha B'Av in NCSY Kollel, Rav Burg explains the nature of walls. Walls ought designed to protect our dignity. When we build healthy walls that protect our dignity and invite each other in, then we will merit to rebuild the walls of Yerushalayim Habenuyah.…

Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive

Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive
In this shiur, delivered at Mishmar in NCSY Kollel, Rav Burg explains how the final story of Sefer Bamidbar is the climax of the story of how brothers and sisters make peace. The entire Torah can be seen as a story of avoiding the hard conversations and the strife that follows. If we are going to bring Mashiach we need to put our real feelings on the table and create real peace.…
In this shiur, delivered on NCSY Kollel during Mishmar, Rav Burg explains how Hashem calls out to us through our desires. When we know our desires we know our mission and our talents but will we say Naar Anochi and run away from our mission or will we step up to the task and actualize our potential?

When we understand each stage of destruction, we also understand how we can rebuild.
In this shiur, delivered in Sharfmans, Rav Burg explains the inner meaning behind the Halacha of Orla. Adam HaRishon did not wait to eat from the Eitz HaDaas because he prioritized his own creativity over the needs of the relationship with Hashem. Only when we are patient, allowing things to grow of their own accord do we see that our creativity is actually in the service of another. Link to source sheet: www.sefaria.org/sheets/563603…
In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains the inner nature of what it means to live a life of Kedusha and why ultimately, while we can reach great heights, we can never reach the level of Hashem Himself. Kedusha means transparency which can only be reached through humility and creating space for another. In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam (over Bein HaZmanim), Rav Burg explains the inner nature of the rechush gadol (great wealth) that Avraham Avinu was promised during the Bris Bein Habesarim. Why do we care about wealth? Why is it stressed over and over again in the story of Yetzias Mitzrayim? We are sent down into this world to collect the 288 sparks that fell down into this world from the Olam HaTohu. When we use this world to serve Hashem we collect the remaining sparks and finish leaving Mitzrayim.…
In this shiur, delivered in the Lubat home in Neve Shamir, Rav Burg explains why the Baal Haggadah counted each son with the number one (as Moshe Rabbeinu did). IFS sees a person as a self and parts. Only when we unblend self from parts can parts leave their exiles and become integrated (self led) with the self.…
In this shiur, delivered in Sharfmans, Rav Burg explains (based on a piece from Rav Ahron Lopiansky shlit"a) why Ahron HaKohen was afraid to draw close to the Mizbeach and why Moshe told him to "stop" being afraid. It was specifically Ahron, who did not try and "control" Hashem but rather stepped back with humility, that made him the perfect person to invite Hashem to dwell in the Mishkan.…
In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains the connection between Nadav and Avihu being intoxicated and bringing an Eish Zara, a strange fire. Only when we accept the present moment as it is, without seeking to diminish or enhance it to avoid our own discomfort, can we truly be connected to reality. For this reason Ahron chose stillness as a response to thd death of his sons and as a reward he was able to engage directly with Hashem.…

In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explains the inner connection between the inauguration of the Mishkan, the Cheit HaEigel and the selling of Yosef down to Mitzrayim. The fear of losing their relationship with their father caused the Shevatim to tell themselves to tell a story about Yosef that led to their own resentment. This resentment led to the jealousy that ultimately resulted in Yosef's sale. This story was passed down for generations and ultimately led to the Cheit HaEigel. In order to inaugurate the Mishkan, Klal Yisrael needed to get to the root of their disunity and rectify the sale of Yosef.…

In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains the inner meaning of the Terumas Hadeshen and the Hotza’as Hadeshen. The Terumas Hadeshen reminds us that our parents and grandparents etc... built the community that we now inhabit. This obligates us to build our community for the next generation just as those who came befoe us did. The Hotza’as Hadeshen teaches us that each days Avodah in the Beis HaMikdash begins anew. We must confront the challenges that we face today and live in the present rathet than getting stuck in the past.…
In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explains why although the Aish on the Mizbeach comes from Hashem, the Kohen had to light the fire in the morning. And athough the fire comes from Hashem, we are instructed to protect it when we travel. The nature of life is engaging with suffering but a Jew is thankful for the suffering they endure because that's how we discover Hashem. It will always rain on our fire but we are assured that our fire can never be extinguished. Our job is to chop the wood and protect the fire.…
In this shiur, delivered in Sharfmans, Rav Burg explains why: 1. We are not Yotzei when we read the Megillah backwards. 2. We are obligated to drink until we don't know the difference between Arur Hama and Baruch Mordechai. Who would read the Megillah backwards? Why would we want to get so drunk that we can't distinguish between a Tzaddik and a Rasha? Only when we let go of using knowledge as power and control do we come to accept reality as it is. And once we accept reality as it is it is quite possible that the exact thing we thought was hurting us was our greatest asset.…

In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains (based on a shiur from Rav Ahron Lopiansky shlit"a) the inner nature of a Korban. A Korban is not a sacrifice, it is a gift that we give to Hashem and the gift that Hashem wants from us is not merely our service but our passion.
In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explores our battle with Amalek. Purim is the Yom Tov that remains even after Yemos HaMashiach. Amalek is the battle that we fight in every generation. Esther HaMalka asks Achashverosh to have another Seuda tomorrow. It seem that everything in our battle with Amalek is future oriented. For Amalek there is no tomorrow and for a Jew tomorrow is an expression of our faith in an assured future.…
In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explained why: 1. Yaakov was attracted to Rachel. 2. Lavan wanted Yaakov to marry Leah first. 3. How Lavan intended to uproot the entire Jewish Nation. We live within the dialectical tension of being ok and yearning for more. On the one hand we need to be ok with our state of Golus so that we can survive. On the other hand we cannot become complacent and stop yearning for Mashiach.…

In this shiur, delivered at Sharfmans, Rav Burg explains the inner nature of the name Yitzchak and why Yitzchak specifically is described as loving Eisav. Yitzchak laughs because while on the one hand he lives within boundaries, he has the capacity to defy all normal expectations. Some people are able to find light beyond the darkness; Yitzchak can find light within the darkness. Only Yitzchak can see beyond the behavior of Eisav and expect the unexpected.…
In this shiur, delivered at Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explains why it was Yitzchak's Teffilah and not Rivka's Teffilah that was answered when she was unable to have children. When we are defined by our past we have an impoverished mentality and our imagination is more limited.…

One who lives an integrity life becomes a conduit for blessing in this world.…
In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explores the three names of Sarah Imeinu, how each one of the names relates to a different Mitzvah. miracle and a particular Avodah of relating to the reality of the world. Important note from Rav Burg: "In the beginning of the shiur I asked a question about how the return of the miracles consoled Yitzchak but neglected to answer the question. I apologize. The answer is that because Sarah Imeinu was able to discover Godliness on all three levels (disavowal, refinement and sublimation) her impact on this world transcended her death. Until Rivka came onto the scene, her impact was not felt and this was what Yitzchak was grieving. He could not understand how his mothers Avodah was somehow discontinued. When Rivka married Yitzchak she took on the countenance of Sarah Imeinu and in a certain sense, she became her. The miracles were once again brought back into reality and this is how Yitzchak was consoled. Through Rivka he understood how his mothers impact continued to be a part of this world."…

This shiur, delivered in Yeshivat HaKotel for the newly formed Acheinu program, explores the nature of the world pre-flood and post-flood. Pre-flood the world received its Godliness from Hashem whereas post-flood the world discovered its Godliness from within. This change was brought about through two mechanisms: 1. the flood 2. the Teiva. The flood of life destroys all of our toxic systems and the Teiva is where we discover our inner strength.…

Noach would not leave the Teiva until the dove returned with an olive leaf in his mouth. But where would a dove get an olive leaf from? The Medrash provides us with two solutions: Gan Eden or Eretz Yisrael. What is the inner meaning of retrieving an olive leaf from these two places? In this shiur, Rav Burg explores how we can return to our lives after the flood of destruction. How do we know that it is safe to leave the Teiva? When we discover that our inner essence is untainted, the essential self that never participated in our lowest moments and even the essence of our lowest parts that did things we are not proud of, it gives us the feeling of safety to return to the vulnerabilities of life.…

In this shiur, delivered at Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explains why Yaakov felt the need at this specific time to explain to Yosef why he buried Rachel on the side of the road and not in Chevron. Rachel was Mevater and put the needs of her children ahead of her own. This is the secret of redemption. As Hashem sees us putting the needs of others before our own, He in turn puts our needs before His own and redeems us even if we are unworthy.…
In this shiur, delivered at the Sorotzkin home in Monsey, Rav Burg explores why Yaakov Avinu wanted to reveal the end of days to his children and why in the end he gave them the Berachos that they were destined to receive. In this shiur, delivered to Mevaseret alumni at Lander College for Men, Rav Burg explains why Yehuda said that their brother (Yosef) had died. Rashi teaches that Yehuda lied to avoid having to produce Yosef. On a level of Drush, Rav Burg explains that to impact Yosef, Yehuda knew that he needed to speak words from the heart. In an honest moment Yehuda came to the recognition that Yosef could not have survived Mitzrayim without his brothers.…
In this shiur, delivered in Stern College, Rav Burg explains how Yehuda approaches Yosef by saying he is like Pharaoh. When we give Mussar (including to ourselves) we must begin with the recognition of their greatness and explain how this behavior doesn't align with their greatness. Additionally, we must always remember that people behave the way they do because they come from somewhere and anything that is understandable is ultimately forgivable.…

Why would this cause Yaakov to love Yosef? What type of father loves his son who tells evil tales about his children? The Ruzhiner explains that in truth Yosef HaTzaddik was being Melamed Zechus on his brothers and seeing them through the lens of positivity is what brings Hashem the ultimate Nachas. In this shiur, delivered in Aish HaTorah to the Chizzuk Mission, Rav Burg explores how we can increase joy even in times of great tragedy. Rav Akiva woke up his Talmidim by explaining that Esther HaMalka ruled over 127 countries because Sarah Imeinu lived for 127 years. In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains the various aspects of rupture and repair in our relationships. 1. Build something holy. 2. Rupture and repair is a process that happens over and over again. 3. We may return to places we already thought we repaired and that is normal and expected. 4. Our responsibility is to make peace with this process.…
In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explains why the Torah spends 400 Pesukim detailing both how the Mishkan was meant to be made and how it was ultimately made. There is an ideal life and a real life. We should not sacrifice our ideals because the reality is different and we can embrace the beauty of of our reality even when is not ideal.…
In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains why the Luchos could be read from the inside and the outside. There are two ways of relating to Hashem. Outside Torah is scientific and mathematical. This was the Torah of Avraham Avinu. Inside Torah is discovered from within the relationship itself. We can and should discover Hashem not only from the outside but from within the words of Torah, at our Shabbos tables and in our community.…
In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explores why although the world is a fragmented place but we crave wholeness. In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains (based on a piece from Rav Shaul Alter shlit"a) the inner connection between the three times it says the word V'nishma in the Torah. We must know that: 1. We have inside of ourselves the capacity to be totally devoted to Hashem. 2. No matter how far we stray from the path, Hashem always us a relationship with us. 3. Every Jew is a Kohen Gadol, worthy of wearing the robes of nobility.…
In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explains why Moshe Rabbeinu's name is not mentioned specifically in this weeks Parsha. Moshe Rabbeinu argued with Hashem that if Hashem were to destroy the Jewish People then he may as well erase Moshe's name from the Torah. Moshe had become one with the Torah to the degree that it was no longer necessary to mention his name. He was the Torah and the Torah was him. Klal Yisrael, Hashem and the Torah are one. Moshe was one with all of Bnei Yisrael. To destroy Bnei Yisrael would be to destroy the Torah itself. Only though connecting on this essential level can we illuminate the world.…
In this shiur, delivered in Sharfmans, Rav Burg explores (based on a piece from Rav Moshe Weinberger) how Yiras Shomayim is the outer sanctum and Torah is the inner sanctum. One must enter the outer sanctum first, where we feel the pain of exile, before we enter the inner sanctum, the joy of Torah. Although the Beis HaMikdash has been destroyed we still have our Mikdash Mi'at, our Shuls and Yeshivas where we can access the joy of he inner sanctum.…

Ultimately, in the times of Mashiach, one will be allowed to eat milk and meat together and this represents the perfect balance in our relationships.…
In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains why Parshas Mishpatim, with all of its intricate legal details, follows the giving of the Torah at Har Sinai and not Parshas Terumah, which involves the building of the Mishkan. The three gates of Nezikin (Babba Kamma, Baba Metzia, Baba Basra) are three steps in mans journey throughout history. We move from barbaric to civilized conflict to Godly harmony. Similarly in our journey towards Hashem we begin by conquering our negative forces, then we conquer our more civilized nature and ultimately we partner with Hashem in building the world into a Godly place.…

In this shiur, delivered at NCSY Michlelet, Rav Burg explores the bracha of V'haarev Na. Only through finding the sweetness of Torah can we ensure transmission of the Jewish mission to the next generation.
In this shiur, delivered at NCSY Kollel on Tisha B'Av, Rav Burg explains how we are all very busy trying to tap into our own loss on Tisha B'Av but what about feeling Hashem's Pain for His loss. In this shiur, delivered at NCSY Michlelet to both TJJ and Michlelet girls, Rav Burg explains how each one of the five tragedies that occurred on Tisha B'Av further our destruction until we are completely annihilated. In this shiur, delivered in NCSY Kollel at Mishmar, Rav Burg explains (based on a sicha from the Lubavitcher Rebbe) why Hashem allowed Klal to make the totally free choice to send Meraglim to spy out Eretz Canaan. We are naturally pulled to do a Mitzvah but when given an option we are totally free to do as we please. In this way we can truly invite Hashem into our lives.…

In this shiur, delivered at NCSY Kollel Mishmar, Rav Burg (quoting from Rav Lopiansky shlit"a) explains why the last battle that Moshe Rabbeinu fought was specifically with Midyan and Bilaam. Why was this a condition for Moshe to move on to the next world? Furthermore, what was the significance of the Tzitz in the battle with Midyan? Are we serving Hashem or serving ourselves? Do we learn Torah in order to pervert the Torah or to do Hashem's will in this world?…

In this shiur Rav Burg explains, based on a sicha from the Lubavitcher Rebbe, the connection between the Masei and the reason why these Parshios are read during the three weeks. We must live with the paradox of becoming hard enough to survive Galus, drawing from wellsprings of faith that we did not know existed, and at the same time understand that this all taking us to Eretz Yisrael, a time of Geula. In this shiur, the last of the year in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg addresses the inverted nuns that we find in this weeks Parsha. What are they doing in this week Parsha? Why a Nun? Why inverted? Why do we recite these pesukim at least three times a week? A Jew is called upon to swim upstream in life. To go against the current. And as we rebound for our state of Nefillah we climb higher than ever before, to a place that is even beyond our capacity to achieve.…
In this shiur, delivered in Michlala, Rav Burg explains (based on the Torah of the Nachlas Yosef) the first several Pesukim of Megillas Rus. Understanding the inner story of how Naomi came to be in Moav allows us to understand the heroism of her return to return to Eretz Yisrael. Indeed from her return comes Dovid HaMelech and ultimately Melech HaMashiach.…
In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explores the topic of seeing the sounds by Har Sinai. The Zohar HaKadosh takes this literally. The inner message of this teaching is that Yiddishkeit needs to be something visible and visceral. We cannot teach the menu of Shabbos without teaching the majesty of Shabbos. If we are going to be Hashem's loyal servants, when the mountain of Har Sinai is held over our heads and a deep hester panim has set in, we must be able to draw from the strength of our relationship with Hashem.…
When we know deeply that we matter, that our actions matter, we are capable of doing incredible things. In this shiur, delivered to the Nshei of Neve Shamir in Ramat Beit Shemesh, Rav Burg explores the concept of Chazal's explanation thatthe destruction of the Beis HaMidash was destroyed because of the fact that they did not make a Birchas HaTorah before davening. Could it be that they did not make a Birchas HaTorah before learning? Even if it did happen, is that something worthy of the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash? Wasn't the Beis HaMikdash destroye because of the big three aveiros? Examining these questions and several more, Rav Burg addresses the topic of finding Hashem in the Torah and now allowing it to become an intellectual pursuit. Only through an authentic relationship with Hashem can we pass on our heritage to the next generation.…

Outside of the Beis HaMikdash, Moshe Rabbeinu ensured that they were overseen by the Beis Din in oder to ensure their continued vigilance in the area of Kedusha. Because Rav Akiva achieved understanding of the fiftieth level of Binah he was able to see through to the essence of even someone who had fallen into the lowest level of Tumah and to redeem them. Rav Burg explains how when we learn Torah we have to see not only the words of Torah but the crowns, the essence, that is within those words. True Torah must draw us closer to every other Jew.…

In this shiur, delivered to the Nshei of Neve Shamir, Rav Burg explains the Zohar HaKadosh which speaks about Moshe Rabbeinu confronting the inner essence of Pharaoh, namely arrogance. Arrogance is built on the impoverished mentality that we are not enough and allows us to do despicable things to uphold this false notion of self. On a deeper level, even our arrogance comes from the Divine but it is a misappropriation. Once we realize that everything comes from Hashem, even our arrogance, redemption occurs.…

Question - If Rebbe were to give shiur about things to keep in mind and be conscious of when building a home of shalom bayis what would be the number one thing that Rebbe would speak about? What is that one factor that will create a strong home of Shalom Bayis? In this shiur, Rav Burg answers this question by examining the enlarged Beis in the word Bereishis and the small Aleph in the word Vayikra. True humility means stepping up to the call of the mission for which we were created (to sustain the world) and stepping back to create space for another in our lives.…

Every single korban has salt in it but none are allowed to have yeast or honey (with the exception of the shtei halachem on Shavuos). The Rambam explains that the Torah did not allow honey or yeast because that is what the baalei avodah zarah used for their sacrifices. What does this mean for us? In this shiur (delivered at Stern College) Rav Burg explains the inner meaning of sacrifice and how through salting the korban we bring out the inner essence of the animal soul - the desire for Godliness.…
As the beginning of Maggid, Ha Lachma Anya contains within it all of Maggid. And yet it is a section of the Haggadah that makes very little sense. In contrast to the rest of the Haggadah it is written in Aramaic. Why? Ha Lachma Anya does not seem to have anything to do with Maggid. Why is it placed there? This is not the bread that our forefathers ate in Mitzrayim, it's the food that they ate when they left Mitzrayim? The Magen Avraham says that we ought to say "This is "like" the food that they ate..." but the Mogen Avraham says lo hifsid if we say it according to our current girsa. Why doesn't the Magen Avraham mandate that we say "like"? Why does he allow the current girsa? He even makes it sound like it is correct and that we have lost nothing by saying the current girsa? This is obviously not an invitation - that should have happened in Shul. At the very least before Kiddush so that the person being invited could have had the first cup of wine. The door is not even opened! What's the difference between those who are hungry and those who are needy? What does it mean to invite some to celebrate Pesach with us? They can't join us in the Korban Pesach, it's too late! They have to be included before the Korban was shechted. What's the difference between now we are here and now we are slaves? What's the connection between all three of these things? In this shiur, delivered in Monsey, Rav Burg explains how we are still in Egypt and the process of leaving Mitzrayim is the story of our entire history. Ha Lachma Anya is a road map for how we leave Mitzrayim. 1 - We recognize our state of being in Mitzrayim. 2 - We realize that we are part of something larger than ourselves. We contribute to those who are in need. We recognize how we are needed in the world. 3 - We hold on to the hope and vision of redemption being both physical and essential.…
The washstand in the Mishkan was made of the hand mirrors that the women used in Mitzrayim to ensure the continuity of Klal Yisrael. Moshe Rabbeinu was reluctant to use these mirrors but Hashem said they were most precious to Him. What was the machlokes between Moshe and Hashem. Why were these mirrors so precious? In this shiur Rav Burg explains how the way we we look at things is what makes them last. It influences the way we act in this world. Only when the Kohanim washed their hands and feet in the kiyor made from these mirrors could they bring atonement to Klal Yisrael.…

Based on a sicha from the Lubavitcher Rebbe zt"l, Rav Burg explains the inner meaning of bells and pomegranates on the hem of the clothing of the Kohen Gadol. True leaders know that they cannot be safe in the Kodesh Hakedoshim if they do not represent every single Jew, including those who make a lot of noise. The pomegranates stand alone (according to Rashi) to show that even in our state of imperfection there is beauty in our struggle.…
In this shiur, delivered to the Chizzuk Mission in Aish HaTorah, Rav Burg explains how even though we remained servants of Achashverosh (which is why we don't say Hallel), we still celebrate Purim because we found the joy within our state of incompleteness. True joy comes from finding the completion within the incompletion. But there is great vulnerability in admitting that we are incomplete and that takes a tremendous amount of honesty and courage.…

Yaakov Avinu took with him the Atzei Shitim from Eretz Canaan to Mitzrayim in order the Klal Yisrael should have the wood in order to build the Mishkan and the Aron. Why did he not just instruct them to take the Atzei Shitim from Mitzrayim? Or better yet, just take them from the Midbar and not have to carry them throughout the desert? In this shiur Rav Burg explores the part of us that is foolish. On the one hand we can fall into the foolishness of sin and on the other hand we can be so foolish as to believe in and achieve the impossible. A Jew must take the Atzei Shitim, tress of folly, from Eretz Yisrael so that they may have hope in Mitzrayim and build a dwelling place for Hashem down below.…
When Yisro joins Moshe Rabbeinu in the desert, Moshe relays all of the happenings that occurred to Klal Yisrael. This despite the fact that the passuk already tells us that Yisro had heard everything. Why did Moshe tell Yisro what he already knew? What was being added? Rashi tells us that Yisro heard about the splitting of the sea and the war with Amalek. This is difficult to understand since the passuk tells us that Yisro heard everything that happened. Why do Chazal highlight these two events? In this shiur Rav Burg explains that difference between excitement and inspiration. Excitement does not last but true inspiration which comes from relevant education lasts a life time.…

Rav Burg began this shiur by asking four questions: 1. We sang Shira in the zechus of our Emunah. What is the connection between our emunah and singing? 2. Az Yashir is the source for techias hameisim in the Torah. What is the connection between techias hameisim and singing? 3. Every morning we sing Az Yashir in Pesukei D'zimra. P"D is about praise and thanksgiving for the greatness of Hashem. Az Yashir does not fit this theme. 4. The Gemara in Megillah (16b) teaches that the sections of the Torah involving Shirah need to be written “ariach al gabei leveinah” the script of the line above is written over the empty space of the line below it, in a bricklaying pattern. Rashi comments that there is actually more empty space than words in the Shirah – more blanks than writing. What is the inner significance of this format? Rav Burg explains that Judaism has a body and a soul. The halacha is the body but emunah is the soul. Through our connection to the soul of Yiddishkeit, not only can we survive in Golus but we can even sing.…
Why is the name of the Parsha Beshalach when there are so many aspects of the Parsha (Krias Yam Suf, the descent of the Mann and Milchemes Amalek) that seem to be more important? The Halachos of Shlucho Shel Adam Kamoso is learned out from the Parsha of Korban Pesach. Why specifically this Parsha? Moshe Rabbeinu is the ultimate Shliach of Hashem and yet he is at first hesitant to accept the mission. Why? In this shiur, Rav Burg explains how if we want to leave the Mitzrayims of our lives and experience true redemption we must transcend our own ego and nullify ourselves to Hashem. In this way we become true emissaries of Hashem in this world.…
Each of the ten Makkos that destroyed Mitzrayim taught invaluable lessons about the dysfunctionality of Mitzrayim. In this shiur, based on a sicha from the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rav Burg explores the Makka of Barad, hail. The unique nature of the hail in Mitzrayim was that it was fire covered in ice. Why did Hashem create the hail in this fashion? We must make sure in life not just to engage the cold exterior but to rectify the fire of the ego that burns within the coldness of a person.…
In this shiur Rav Burg gave over two pieces from the Aish Kodesh. Vayechi - In this piece the Aish Kodesh teaches us how Yaakov Avinu being "blocked off" from revealing the end of days to his children was actually a sign of the redemption itself. When the damage of Golus reaches cosmic levels Hashem will surely bring the Geula. Vaeira - In this piece the Aish Kodesh teaches us the difference between chein, chesed and rachamim. Chein and Chesed have nothing to do with being judged. We find grace in Hashem's eyes not because we are worthy or unworthy but simply because. Similarly, Hashem does Chesed for us because he is the ultimate Baal Chesed, not because we are deserving. When it comes to Rachamim, mercy, we are in a state of judgement and Hashem finds something within us that we can be deserving of His mercy. Moshe Rabbeinu is commanded to treat Klal Yisrael gently because Pharaoh was working Klal Yisrael to death. In such a state they needed chein and chesed, not rachamim.…
Moshe Rabbeinu wonders about the reason Klal Yisrael has not left Mitzrayim. Initially he believes that Klal Yisrael needs a warrior to teach them their strength but ultimately he learns that the reason Klal Yisrael has not left Mitzrayim is because of their lack of Achdus. To redeem Klal Yisrael Moshe Rabbeinu must learn to become a shepherd, taking care of the young sheep that has strayed from the rest of the flock. In this shiur Rav Burg explains the three lessons that Moshe Rabbeinu learned as a shepherd and how we can bring redemption in our generation by employing these very same lessons.…

There are various opinions regarding the origin of Moshe Rabbeinu's name. There are those that maintain that it is a Hebrew name while others maintain that it is an Egyptian name. If Klal Yisrael is redeemed in the merit of not changing their names, how could Moshe Rabbeinu himself have an Egyptian name? In this shiur Rav Burg explains the true nature of golus. A light descends into the darkness of golus to emerge greater than before. The Chutzpah of Pharaoh gives rise to an even greater and holier Chutzpah from the daughter of Pharaoh. It is that holy Chutzpah that Moshe Rabbeinu embodies as he redeems us from Mitzrayim.…

The challenge of parenting in today's generation may feel enormous. Yosef HaTzaddik teaches us that even in the most difficult circumstances we are all capable of raising children like Menashe and Ephraim. Our children have two parts: Menashe - the parts they would like to forget and Ephraim - the parts they value. In this shiur, based on the Degel Machaneh Ephraim, Rav Burg explains how we must parent our children to know that the Menashe part of them is not who they truly are. And rather than feeling deeply ashamed of these parts we must understand that we will become great because of them.…
Yosef HaTzaddik reveals himself to his brothers and asks "Is my father still alive?" Of course he is alive! The brothers have been talking about Yaakov throughout their entire time in Mitzrayim. Yehudas words give us insight into how we can be enough for ourselves.…
Yaakov blesses his children that the Egyptian ruler should have mercy on them. The Aish Kodesh asks, why doesn't he bless them that no harm should befall them. Just as Hashem creates an expanding universe and tells it to stop expanding so too there are different types of salvations. Sometimes salvation comes from an expanding process. You go to the doctor who diagnoses an illness, procure the medicine etc... Sometimes, if there is no time for an expanding process, Hashem says enough to the expansion. The salvation must come immediately. This is the deeper meaning of Hashem creating the world with middas harachamim before middas hadin. The mercy of Hashem bring a salvation immediately without any process needing to unfold.…

The outside influences of immorality have made an impact on our community. In order to transmit Yiddishkeit it needs to be pure through and through. In this week's Parsha Yaakov Avinu fell asleep at the Makom Hamikdash and dreamt of Malachim going up and down a ladder. Chazal tell us that Hashem had to protect Yaakov from these Malachim who wanted to kill him. The Ksav Sofer explains that they wanted to kill Yaakov because he fell asleep at such a holy place. The Gemara tells us that Hashem made the sun set early so that Yaakov Avinu would go to sleep. If that's the case then why would the Malachim want to kill him? He was simply doing what Hashem wanted!?! And is sleeping in the Makom Hamikdash worthy of the death penalty??? In this shiur, delivered in California, Rav Burg explains how we are meant to build a dwelling place for Hashem in our world. The challenge of Tisha B'Av is that we are being called upon to feel the pain of the loss of the Beis HaMikdash when we have never experienced the Beis HaMikdash. What we can feel is the pain of the shechina who longs to have a place in our world once again. Feeling the pain of another requires a strong sense of self which can only come from tapping in to the Godly soul that dwells within each of us. We say kinnos that are difficult to understand and that contain references with which we are unfamiliar. We live in an age where we are so blessed to have so much. The pain of losing the Beis HaMikdash is difficult to tap into. The Ir Miklat was a city of refuge for those who murdered accidentally. According to the sefarim hakedoshim the sinner who cuts himself off from Hashem in some ways can be considered like a murderer. The sinners desire to run to the Ir Miklat is an expression of the desire to do Teshuva and be saved from the goel hadam, the Satan who is chasing after him. In this shiur, delivered at NCSY Kollel Mishmar, Rav Burg explores the various halachos of the Ir Miklat and the relevance to us in our life.…

In this shiur, delivered in NCSY Michlelet, Rav Burg analyzes why at the end of Klal Yisrael's journey through the midbar Moshe Rabbeinu reminds Klal Yisrael of all of the times that they angered Hashem. Shouldn't we have ended on a positive note? In truth, at the end of the journey, we are in a perfect position to finally understand that even the "downs" were a necessary part of the process.…
Three times in the Torah לה is spelled without a mapik hey (a dot in the middle of the hey). The final passuk in this week's Parsha is one of those times. Rashi, quoting Rav Moshe HaDarshan explains that without the mapik hey the word can also be read לא. In this context it would indicate that while Novach did conquer Knas and name it after himself, ultimately the name of the city did not last. The question is, why is this an important idea for the Torah to convey? What is the eternal message being communicated to us? In this shiur (delivered on NCSY KOLLEL during Mishmar) Rav Burg explores why Torah is compared to fire, the importance of serving Hashem with love, how we can develop true passion for Torah and why only through passion is our Yidishkeit sustained.…
In this shiur the Aish Kodesh presents a daring exploration of how Hashem fulfills the entire Torah, including the mitzvah of teshuva. How can Hashem do teshuva if he can't sin? How can Hashem regret something if He is perfect? The Aish Kodesh explains that Hashem regrets, so to speak, the pain that he has caused Klal Yisrael. Full Teshuva is not only limited to causing Klal Yisrael no more tzaros but a full restoration to our destiny. Furthermore, the Aish Kodesh explains that we are obligated to do teshuva in the same fashion. It is not enough to stop sinning, we must become growth oriented people. In so doing the movement down below creates an awakening from above and will bring salvation to Klal Yisrael.…

In this week's Parsha we find the mitzvah of the korban tamid. The Medrash says that this mitzvah captures the essence of the Torah. Why? Furthermore, why is this mitzvah juxtaposed to the appointment of Yehoshua bin Nun. Rashi explains that it comes to teach us that while Moshe was concerned about the future leadership of Klal Yisrael, Hashem asks Moshe, who will take care of me when you are gone? This is a shocking Rashi! Is Hashem lacking? Why is Hashem concerned for Himself so to speak? In this shiur, quoting the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rav Burg explores the topic of Hashem's perfection and how each and every Jew infinitely matters.…
In this final segment of the derasha on Rosh Hashanah the Aish Kodesh addresses the issue of the prosecuting angels that challenge the veracity of our teffilos and teshuva. Are we really crying out to connect to Hashem or are we just trying to solve our pain? Are we doing Teshuva because we really mean it, or are we doing teshuva because that's what Yidden do at this time of the year? The Aish Kodesh assures us that when we sincerely cry out to Hashem from a place of yishuv hadaas, Hashem silences the prosecuting angels and returns us to Him. In that context even our personal requests to be removed from our state of pain are considered a praise to Hashem.…

This week's Parsha is a master class on how to respond when you find yourself in a chaotic relationship. Korach is the archetypal narcissist who seeks to control others. While he appears to have a noble mission, in truth it is just a way of elevating himself. Moshe Rabbeinu's response teaches us how we ought to behave when we find ourselves in similar situations. 1. The story of Eliezer finding a shidduch for Yitzchak comprises 67 pesukim in the Torah! Normally the Torah is concise but here Hashem sees fit to tell us the story in great detail. Why? 2. Eliezer gives Rivka a golden nose ring worth half a shekel and two bracelets each worth ten gold shekel. Rashi teaches that the nose ring is an allusion to the half a shekel that would one day be donated to the Mishkan and the bracelets are an allusion to the aseres hadibros. What does this have to do with marriage? Why does Eliezer see fit to bring these concepts to mind now? 3. The half shekel was a tikkun for the cheit haegel. Hashem showed Moshe a half shekel on fire because he could not understand how half a shekel could bring an atonement for such a terrible aveira. How does the fiery coin answer Moshe's question. In this shiur Rav Burg explains how these two gifts teach Rivka about having a healthy, non codependent relationship. Like the half shekel she is missing her other half but like the bracelets she is already whole. Being one half of a whole allows us to apologize and to forgive our spouse. Being whole means we allow our spouse to share their lives with us and we in turn share our lives with them.…
In this exceptionally stirring shiur the Aish Kodesh asks why Hashem won't allow the tzaddikim to have serenity in this world. The Rebbe distinguishes between those who are silent because they choose not to speak and those who are mute because they have loss all capacity to process their trauma and give language to their pain. Still, even in this state, the mute person can gesture and communicate somewhat. Deeper still is the person whose pain is so exceptional that they cannot communicate their pain on any level. Their muteness is absolute. The Tzaddik who finds himself in such a state finds a way to cry out to Hashem and raise others up with him. The Tzaddik cannot be serene in such a state. He cannot accept his own pain and live a muted life. As he rises up he brings others with him. The Aish Kodesh had suffered heavy losses in his own life and in this shiur we gain insight into how to Aish Kodesh overcame his own pain and raised others with him.…

Delivered at Yeshivat HaKotel's Vayichan program on Hoshana Rabbah, based on a sicha from the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rav Burg explains how it is the simple Jews that reflect Hashem's essence in this world. Complexity hides Hashem's simple presence in creation. The greater the complexity, the greater the concealment. The simple Jew who serves Hashem simply because they're Jewish lacks the concealment of more complex Jews. The Aravos of Hoshana Rabbah are different than the aravos of the dalet minim. Though they both represent the simple Jews, the aravos of Hoshana Rabbah are not impacted in any way by the sophistication of the other minim. In that way, Hoshana Rabbah highlights the beauty of the simple Jews.…
As Yaakov Avinu is sleeping and dreaming of the malachim going up and down the ladder, Rashi explains that it is Hashem who is guarding over him. The Aish Kodesh asks, why is it Hashem guarding over Yaakov and not a malach? Why does it repeat that he is being guarded twice? The Malachim of the ladder represent the nations of the world who are at war with each other. When they are fighting, Klal Yisrael is in danger. In these times we need the special shemira of Hashem Himself. When we have no zechusim of our own, we are still the children of the Avos and Hashem watches over us in their merit. The Rebbe explains that there is a difference between that which is written and that which is spoken. That which is spoken does not last but that which is written can be taken with us. The Rebbe calls upon us, in times of great struggle, to write our inspiration on our hearts so we can take it with us.…

Oil rises to the top when mixed with other liquids In this shiur (based on the teachings of the Lubavitcher Rebbe) Rav Burg explains how sometimes the darkness propels the Jew into a state of self discovery, where he is now enabled to impact the world around him. 1:50:01Rav Burg explains the nature of Yud Tes Kislev at the 9 and a half minute mark. The main sicha was given at the 47 minute mark.
In the final moments of her life Rachel Imeinu called her newborn son Ben Oni. In the very same passuk Yaakov calls the child Binyamin. Why doesn't Yaakov call Binyamin by the name Rachel chose for him? We know that Yaakov loved Rachel so deeply. Why do they spend their last moments on earth together fighting over the child's name? Why does the Torah refer to Binyamin as Binyamin and not Ben Oni? Does Hashem somehow choose Yaakov's side over Rachel? Does Hashem ignore the wish of a dying Tzadeikes like Rachel? In this shiur, Rav Burg explains how there was no argument at all between Yaakov and Rachel. Instead our Avos laid out some of the fundamental principles, indeed the blueprint, for how we parent children who are in pain.…
Interestingly, the first time the Torah ever says the word love is in the context of Yitzchak's marriage to Rivka. The Torah never says the word love in the context of Avraham's marriage to Sarah. The Torah does say that Yaakov loved Rachel but that was prior to their marriage. In this shiur, Rav Burg explores the nature of how we articulate emotions before relationships, within relationships and when we encounter various crisis in our lives.…

How can we understand the statement of Chazal that those who mourn the Beis HaMikdash will merit to see it in joy. Have not the Tzaddikim mourned? Why haven't they merited to see the Beis HaMikdash rebuilt? How can we mourn something we have never experienced?
Rav Burg explains how the Beis HaMikdash is an expression of Hashem's love for Klal Yisrael. Its destruction is the concealment of God's love.

The main Mitzvah of Pesach is the eating of the Matzah. But why only three Matzah's and not four? Why must the Matzah have a specific taste if the Halacha is that you are yotzei without tasting the Matzah? In this shiur, based on a sicha from the Lubavitcher Rebbe, (delivered on zoom to over 300 people!) Rav Burg explains the difference between the simple, natural faith that enabled us to leave Mitzrayim and the rich, cultivated faith that allowed us to receive the Torah. In these final moments before Moshiach it is our opportunity to "taste" a deeper and bolder faith that will bring us to the final redemption.…

Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive
Avraham Avinu builds three Mizbeachs. Rashi tells us that the first is to give thanks to God for promising him that he would have children and the Land of Israel. The second is to atone for the future sins of his descendants. However the last Mizbeach is a mystery, Rashi does not tell us why Avraham built a Mizbeach. In this shiur, based on a sicha from the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rav Burg explains the three stages of love. Love because. Love despite. Love for no reason at all.…

This shiur is a continuation of Shiur #6. Now that we have shown that intelligent design is a reasonable argument for the existence of God we must ask the question, does God Himself not have an intelligence design? If so, does God have a designer?

Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive
This weeks question - I have heard and learned that the environment of a home comes from the woman. I would like to have a more yiddishe home than I grew up in, but sometimes I struggle to know how to create that without ever having lived in a home like that and knowing really what it should even ideally be. How do I work towards this goal without a clear picture of what success would look like?…

To sponsor please email us at Nitzotzos@gmail.com Question #1 - How do emotions work if you’ve built up emunah? If everything in the end is going to be okay, and you believe that everything Hashem does is for the good, how do emotions come into play? Are you supposed to suppress emotions? Will working on this definition of emunah lead to getting rid of negative emotions? Is that healthy? Or do emotions come into play in a different way? Question #2 - Does the whole concept of Aveilut represent a certain lack of Emunah in Hashem? Doesn't everything that happen really happen for the best? So why do we mourn? If the answer is that it does not represent a lack of faith (which I assume is the case based on the amount of halachot and maamarei chazal that deal with aveilut), why does it not represent a lack of Emunah?…

Question: 1. Rebbe, is there really such a thing of loving someone or doing something for someone else just because you want to give to them in the purest sense? I know that Ahava comes from the word Hav, which is give, but I think that according to psychology the only reason why we would give is because we get something back in return. 2. Isn’t it the same in a marriage. It’s not just giving because if you would only give and your spouse does not give back then you would not want to stay with them. So then wouldn’t it be a codependent relationship in terms of giving and taking, and therefore one can say that the motives behind the giving are ultimately how your spouse treats you after you have put in the effort by giving to your spouse and making them happy? Obviously you want your spouse to be happy but is it just because you enjoy it when they are happy? Even if someone gives their life for someone else can’t you say it’s because they wouldn’t want to live without them. I know there is something more to love and giving but I according to psychology there might not be. Why wouldn’t psychology be correct?…

Question #2 - I think it is easier for boys to know how they identify hashkafically. They have shiurs or rebbes that they may identify with or follow, while girls don’t necessary have something like morning shiur, night Seder etc. Since boys essentially have these different types of learning groups (topics of chassidus, or more litvish, etc) i think it is easier for them to know where they’re holding. For me, I find it extremely difficult to know what type of guy I “need” or to tell a shadchan, because I never really labeled myself as anything. I’m a frum yid! - what else do I say?…

For thousands of years Jews have been persecuted where ever they went. As strangers in a strange land we have never been fully accepted into our host country for extended periods of time. How do we cope with this challenge? Some say that we need to close off from the society around us and live in our own ghettos. Others say we need to leave our Judaism behind and assimilate into the culture around us. If we remain in the ghetto and don't share God's message with the world around us, what are we here for? On the other hand if we assimilate we certainly won't be capable of sharing God's message. What is a Jew to do? The Torah is replete with beautiful messages hidden in plain sight. Question: How much hishtadlus does one need to put in finding their bashert? What can make the “shidduch crisis” go away? What can we do as a community and what are ideas that could make the process of “waiting to be set up” easier? If it’s all up to HaShem, what does one do in terms of personal effort?…

In this shiur, based on a maamar from the Tzemach Tzedek, Rav Burg explores the concept of aveiros becoming merits for us through appropriate Teshuva. In the end, if we don't become deeply ashamed of who we are, our aveiros will teach us things about ourselves that we never knew before

At Har Sinai the passuk references five kolos. The Gemara in Berachos connects this to the five kolos we reference in Sheva Berachos and says that those who want a kinyan in Torah ought to celebrate a bridesgroom. In this shiur, Rav Burg explains the five dimensions of how Hashem created the world and how each dimension expresses a different aspect of our relationship with Hashem and others.…

The parsha of Kabbalas HaTorah begins with the words "Vayishma Yisro." This indicates that the entirety of this parsha is encapsulated in these two words. What is the deeper meaning of listening? Who was Yisro? In this shiur, delivered in Yerushalayim at the first ever Nitzotzos event in Eretz Yisrael, Rav Burg expounds upon how there are two ways of engaging the world. As it is or as it will one day be. Journeying through several machloksim, we discover the distinction between those who hear and those who listen.…
Question: How should a girl with an outgoing personality balance the middah of tznius without suppressing or neglecting her natural personality? We know our speech is holy, how do we know when we are talking too much or not talking enough/suppressing what we have to say for tznius?

As Klal Yisrael is redeemed from Mitzrayim we walked through the sea on dry land. But if we are walking through dry land are we really in the sea? The Lubavitcher Rebbe explains that there are two types of people, those who dwell on the land and those who live in the sea. In this shiur, Rav Burg teaches us that it is through our connection to Hashem and being enveloped in His world that we can develop a healthy ego and a truly unique persona.…

Klal Yisrael finds themselves trapped between the oncoming Egyptian army and the banks of the Yam Suf. An argument ensues. What should we do? One camp says they will never take us alive. Another says let us surrender. Another argues that we should fight till the death. And yet another says let us pray to God. Moshe rejects all of these plans. In life we often find ourselves "stuck" in difficult places. Do we give up? Lower our expectations? Fight till the death? Pray? In this shiur that was based on a sicha from the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rav Burg explains that when all hope seems lost, our avodah is just to put one foot in front of the other and just keep swimming. What appears to be a wall may be the miracle you were waiting for.…

Sefer Bereishis ends with the death of Yosef HaTzaddik and his burial in Mitzrayim. The passuk immediately before speaks about how we will one day leave Golus. Why does the Torah choose to end the Sefer on such a low note? In this shiur, Rav Burg teaches us about those people in our life who are always there for us no matter how far we fall. It is those people that give us the strength to carry on even in the darkest of times.…
Yaakov Avinu instructs Yosef to take an oath that he will bury him in Eretz Yisrael. Does Yaakov not trust that Yosef will do as he says? How do we make real and lasting changes in our lives? We know what we "should" do but often we fail to live up to the expectations we have of ourselves. In this shiur, Rav Burg teaches us that words matter. The way we speak indicates the way we think, which in turn impacts the way we feel and ultimately how we act.…

Why did Yosef wait to tell his brothers that he was their long lost brother? How did he know that now they would accept him? Making real changes in our life is one of the most challenging aspects of being a growth oriented person. What stops us from making lasting changes? In this shiur, Rav Burg teaches us how to open ourselves up to the possibility that our perception is not reality. Only by seeing a larger truth can we begin to make fundamental shifts in our life.…

Yaakov sent Yosef down to Mitzrayim with one last shiur - the lesson of the egla arufa. What was the essence of this teaching that gave Yosef the strength to survive in Mitzrayim? What was the message that Yosef sent back to Yaakov when he referenced the last lesson of the egla arufa? In this shiur, Rav Burg teaches us how to stay connected in the golus of our life.…

Sometimes I feel embarrassed to ask for things when I’m davening because I feel like I dont have the right to ask anything of HaShem because of my sins. How can I approach tefilah in a way where I feel “worthy” to ask things of Hashem?

Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive
This week's question is: How do emotions work if you’ve built up emunah? If everything in the end is going to be okay, and you believe that everything Hashem does is for the good, how do emotions come into play? Are you supposed to suppress emotions? Will working on this definition of emunah lead to a deletion in negative emotions? Is that healthy? Or do emotions come into play in a different way?…
How do we build a home for God? How can we make him feel comfortable in this world? In this shiur, Rav Burg talks about the inner nature of Maariv and the different malachim that Yaakov encounters in his travels to teach us how we can find kedusha in the most mundane aspects of this world.
As parents we know that all of our children have challenges. Some more than others. How do we parent the confused child? The child who on the outside seems like an Eisav but on the inside knows they are a Yaakov? In this shiur, Rav Burg shares with us some essential parenting tools for all children but especially for children that seem to be two people.…
