Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive

In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains the inner connection between the Mitzvos of Mila and Kesuba. It is far easier to cut something or someone off than it is to create unity with someone who is your polar opposite.

N
Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive

In this shmooze, delivered at Mevaseret Mishmar, Rav Burg explains the inner connection between the cutting of the grain and Shavuos. On Shavuos Hashem gives us the Torah but it is up to us to take responsibility for receiving the Torah.
In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explains why Shevet Dan had significantly more people than Shevet Binyamin despite the fact that Dan had only one child and Binyamin had ten. When we raise our children, especially those who have challenges, to believe that they are awesome, they can live beyond their natural limitations.…
In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains the inner meaning of the Maamar Chazal that says that Nadav aneand Avihu sinned because they did not have children. When we have an outlet for our creativity, we have a greater capacity for surrender.
In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explains the inner connection between Ameilus B'Torah and Shemita.
In this shiur, delivered in Sharfmans, Rav Burg explains why the ultimate punishment is not for our anger with Hashem but with our apathy.
N
Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive

In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains why when we fail to return someone's greeting we are robbing them of their dignity and sending them on a downwards spiral.
In this shiur, delivered in Aish HaTorah to the Chizuk Mission, Rav Burg explains the inner meaning of Matan Torah. At Matan Torah there was no echo because all of the world revealed itself to be an expression of the Dvar Hashem. Though the world reverted back to its previous state, it years to be its authentic self. Our mission is to reveal the true essence of everything in this world. Though the world in its fragmented state clings to us in a way that we feel drags us down, it does so because it yearns to be connected to Hashem. This is true not only of the material world but even of the broken parts of ourselves.…
In this shmooze, delivered at the joint Mevaseret/Shaalvim Lag Ba’Omer event, Rav Burg explains how Rav Akiva was able to begin again even after he lost 24000 talmidim. Rav Shimon Bar Yochai reveals that even unimaginable suffering can be a gift when used correctly.
N
Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive

In this shiur, delivered in Sharfmans, Rav Burg explains the inner meaning of the Kohen Baal Mum. Sometimes we feel like a Kohen, chosen for a greater mission. Sometimes we feel like a Baal Mum, like we are damaged goods. A foreigner, unworthy of doing the Avodah in the Beis HaMikdash. The Kohen Baal Mum asks the question, Hashem why did you make me feel so distant from You?!? The answer to this question lies in the essence of Shavuos.…
In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains the true definition of love. When Hashem created the world, He pulled Himself back to create space for us to exist. In our relationships, we have the opportunity to act like Hashem and pull ourselves back to create space for another. We are often afraid to do so because we lack a deep connection to our infinite Godly souls. When we play the game of life with an infinite amount of "poker chips" we are strong enough to pull back and give ourselves to another.…
In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explains the inner meaning of Kavod. Kavod does not mean approval, recognition, appreciation or honor. On one level it means the substance of a person. The awareness of the Godliness that resides within each and every one of us. On a deeper level it means the immeasurable preciousness that the Ribono Shel Olam has for every single Jew.…
N
Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive

In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg examines many of the halachos of the Metzora and explains the inner nature of each one. When we take a snapshot of someone, defining them without context by their lowest moments, we fail to capture the full picture of who they are.
N
Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive

In this shmooze, delivered at Mevaseret Mishmar, Rav Burg explains the inner meaning of Sefiras HaOmer and the connection to Shabbos. Only when we find serenity can we dream and only when we can dream can we receive the Torah.
N
Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive

In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains the inner meaning of the Niddah cycle. The halacha of the mother who gives birth to a baby boy and gives her son a Bris represents the Torah of man. We are not meant to live in a state of Tahara but to achieve a state of Tahara. In this way we rectify the sin of Adam HaRishon.…
N
Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive

In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explores the inner nature of the Racham bird. In today's day and age it is popular to put things in "context" in order to find compassion for those who commit atrocities. Ultimately this leads to the development of a cruel society. Similarly, in relationships, while there is often value in being compassionate, we must learn to create healthy boundaries when someone is showing up in ways that are inappropriate and make us feel unsafe. The Racham bird may be compassionate, but it's compassionate even to the cruel.…
N
Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive

In this shmooze, delivered at Mevaseret Mishmar, Rav Burg explores three different Torah’s around the halachos of Kashrus in animals. The Kli Yakar explains that we must be careful about our surrounding influences. Rav Yisrael Salanter teaches that we can never write off another Jew. The Chida explains that we need to define people by their core positivity. And if this is true about how we relate to others, it is certainly the way we need to relate to ourselves.…
N
Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive

In this shiur, delivered in Sharfmans, Rav Burg explains the inner nature of the sin of Nadav and Avihu. What does it mean that they were drunk? Why is Ahron HaKohen told to communicate the issur about being drunk in the Mishkan for all generations? There is a difference between religious and spiritual. Religion is about serving Hashem the way He wants to be served. Spirituality is about serving Hashem with all of our heart. When we combine being religious and spiritual is when we are truly serving Hashem wholeheartedly.…
In this shiur, Rav Burg explains (based on a Torah from the Shvilei Pinchas) the secret of the Bnei Ephraim leaving Mitzrayim 30 years too early. What was their thought process? What was their mistake? Why does Hashem say that He will avenge their blood if they made a mistake?
N
Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive

In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam on Erev Pesach, Rav Burg explains the inner meaning of Ha Lachma Anya. Only through pure Chesed will Klal Yisrael ultimately be redeemed.
N
Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive

In this shiur Rav Burg explains the deeper meaning of the small Aleph at the beginning of Vayikra. When we humble ourselves and the world then we reveal the inner essence of Hashem that the material world is rooted in. Only when we harmonize the physical and the spiritual world are we fulfilling the mission for which we were created.…
In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explains why Hashem wanted Klal Yisrael to avoid the Pelishtim as they left Mitzrayim, why the first Mitzvah Klal Yisrael received was freeing slaves and why on the precipice of entering Eretz Yisrael, Moshe Rabbeinu reminds Klal Yisrael of the fears they experienced when they left Mitzrayim. To be a slave in Mitzrayim means to lose all sense of dignity and agency over one's life. The process of taking Klal Yisrael out of Mitzrayim is restoring their dignity and giving them a sense of responsibility for their lives.…
In this shiur, delivered in Sharfmans, Rav Burg uses several different aspects of the Mishkan to explore how we can build a relationship with Hashem.
In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains the deeper meaning of Yetzias Mitzrayim. More than just Hashem overpowering Pharaoh, Hashem took Klal Yisrael out from the womb of Mitzrayim and birthed us into a nation.
In this shiur, delivered at Mevaseret Mishmar "Unplugged" (last Mishmar of the Zman), Rav Burg shared a Vort from the Noviminsker Rebbe zt"l who explains why in the Mishkan they collected not only gold and silver but even copper. A Yeshiva is a place where even boys who don't obviously shine are a cherished part of the Yeshiva. Only when we value the copper Talmidim can we be considered a true Mishkan.…
In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains the inner connection between Shabbos and the Mishkan. Our responsibility is to build a vessel and to relinquish control to Hashem that He will fill our vessel with Divine blessings. In this way we let go of the anxiety of taking responsibility for the outcome of Parnasa. At this level even our weekdays take on an element of Shabbos.…
In this shiur, delivered in Aish Gesher for Women, Rav Burg explains the inner meaning of why Esther HaMalka insisted that Purim be established as a Yom Tov and Megillas Esther be included in Tanach. When we understand the secret of the Machtzis Hashekel being a coin of fire, that we have a mission for which we are created, that Hashem loves us eternally and that small actions make a big difference, we recognize that we are all writing a Megillah for generations to come.…

Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive

In this shmooze, delivered at the pre-Purim / Hilula of Moshe Rabbeinu Mevaseret Mishmar, Rav Burg explains the significance of the fact that Haman rejoiced over the fact that the lottery fell out in Adar, the month when Moshe Rabbeinu passed away. Haman failed to realize that in Yiddishkeit death is just the beginning of new life.…
In this shiur, delivered in Sharfmans, Rav Burg explains the inner meaning of the noise that the Kohen Gadol's clothing makes upon entering the Beis HaMikdash. There is a difference between guilt and shame. When we feel shame we feel unworthy of love and connection. When we feel guilt we are tapped into our true self which is essentially connected to Hashem. That bond can never be broken and Hashem always wants to hear from us no matter how far we have strayed.…
N
Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive

In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains (based on a Sicha from the Lubavitcher Rebbe) the inner meaning of why Moshe Rabbeinu's name is missing in this week’s parsha. We all carry within our own souls a spark of Moshe Rabbeinu. When we define ourselves by our essential self we tap into that spark and transform our service of Hashem.…
N
Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive

In this shiur, delivered in Aish HaTorah to the Chizuk Mission, Rav Burg explains the inner meaning of the halachos of how we read the Megillah, how we roll the Megillah and the tenses of the Brachos. Esther is the bechina of the greatest possible concealment, which is where she discovers her truest self.…
In this shiur, delivered to Darchei Binah on the occasion of their 30th day of being social media free, Rav Burg explains the inner meaning of the word Hineini. Hineini means to stand with humility and bravely face the impossible. As we let go of distractions in our lives we become more present in reality and have the capacity to live Hineini lives.…
N
Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive

In this shiur, delivered in Sharfmans, Rav Burg explains why this Parsha is named Terumah and not Mishkan. To make a lasting and meaningful change in this world, the transformation needs to come from below. As we become givers, the world becomes a dwelling place for Hashem.
In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explains the inner meaning of the Keruvim standing in an intimate embrace as the Beis HaMikdash is being destroyed. The secret of Sinas Chinam is that we only hate because we love.
N
Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive

In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains (based on the Kedushas Levi) why the Aron containing the Luchos is mentioned twice and why the rods in the Aron were not allowed to be removed. The Luchos represent the essence of our relationship with Hashem. Sometimes our Yiddishkeit can feel disjointed. Mitzvos may feel like they stand alone, separate from our mission to be Davek to Hashem. The Aron must be portable, revealing the essence in every single Mitzvah.…
N
Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive

In this shiur, delivered to the Chizuk Mission in Aish HaTorah in Yerushalayim, Rav Burg explores the inner essence of antisemitism and how we claim our Jewish identity in the darkest of times. We have a choice - fulfill the hole we have in ourselves with power or with submission to Hashem. Ultimately, our choice to submit represents a threat to those who seek power.…
N
Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive

In this shiur, delivered at the Ramada Hotel to the Daily Giving Learn a Thon, Rav Burg explains how Klal Yisrael is in its essence a nation of Chesed while our enemies seek out new ways to inflict cruelty upon us.
N
Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive

In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains why in the middle of Kabbalas HaTorah the Torah "interrupts" the narrative to give the civil laws of Parshas Mishpatim. How we engage in our interpersonal relationships is critical to Kabbalas HaTorah and our mission as Jews.
In this shiur, delivered at Stern College, Rav Burg explains the inner connection between being misameach a Chasan and a Kallah and meriting the Five Kolos of Torah.

In this shiur, delivered at the Mashiach home in Chicago, Rav Burg explains the inner connection between man being described as a tree in the field and the egla arufa. Our soul expresses itself most deeply when it does a Mitzvah. Self actualization means not only that we are productive people but that our soul is able to fulfill its purpose.…
In this shiur, delivered in the Valley in Los Angeles, Rav Burg explains the inner workings of how we can leave our personal Mitzrayim and yet still be stuck before we arrive at our personal Har Sinai. Truth can defeat falsehood but it cannot necessarily overcome apathy. When we don't care we have to move beyond logic and tap into the essence of our soul. This movement becomes the vehicle for achieving our own Kabbalas HaTorah.…
In this shiur, delivered in Sharfmans, Rav Burg explains why Klal Yisrael prostrated themselves after hearing the Mitzvah of Korban Pesach. Only when Klal Yisrael has their hope for a future restored can they truly be mekabel on themselves to serve Hashem.
In this shiur, delivered in Mevaseret, Rav Burg explains why only after Makkas Choshech did Pharaoh and Moshe become angry with one another. What was the value in Moshe Rabbeinu slapping Pharaoh in the face? The ten Makkos are meant to rectify the ten dimensions of the soul. In this shiur each Makkah is explored so as to understand why everything changed after Choshech.…
N
Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive

In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains (based on a Sicha from the Lubavitcher Rebbe zt"l) why Makkas Bechoros specifically happens at midnight and why Klal Yisrael needed a special protection during this plague. Hashem chooses Klal Yisrael from the essence of His being. Through the Mitzvah of Bris Mila and Korban Pesach we reveal our own essence thus drawing Hashem's essence into our world.…
In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explains (based on a Torah from the Lubavitcher Rebbe zt"l) why Rashi reminds us that Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov are the Avos. Moshe Rabbeinu learns that Hashem is trying to communicate His essence to Klal Yisrael and that can only happen as Klal Yisrael discovers their own essence. While the mind will always ask questions, the heart understands what the mind cannot.…
In this shmooze, delivered at Mevaseret Mishmar, Rav Burg explains why Moshe Rabbeinu spoke to to Pharoah despite the fact that Pharaoh could not understand him and Ahron HaKohen would be interpreting. In order to overcome our ego it needs to be introduced to Hashem. Only afterwards can we employ our faculty of reason.…
N
Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive

In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explains (based on a Sicha from the Lubavitcher Rebbe zt"l) why the Torah tells us that Moshe Rabbeinu was afraid despite the fact that it doesn't seem to advance the narrative of the story in any way. The way we perceive the world becomes the reality we live in. When we think good, when we have Bitachon in Hashem, we create a positive reality.…
In this shmooze, delivered at Mevaseret Mishmar, Rav Burg explains the inner connection between the death of Yosef HaTzaddik and the Bracha of Moshe Rabbeinu to Yosef thay references Hashem as dwelling in the Sneh. In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explains why Asarah B'Teves would obligate us to fast even on Shabbos, the connection between Asarah B'Teves and Yosef HaTzaddik and the inner nature of a siege. On Asarah B'Teves Hashem revisits the decision of whether the churban will continue and how we relate to every other Jew decides our fate.…
In this shiur, delivered in Sharfmans, Rav Burg explains (based on a Torah from Rav Yaakov Kaminetsky zt"l) why Shimon and Levi were assigned to become the Rabbeim and the Sofrim of Klal Yisrael. True, they were criticized by Yaakov Avinu for being overly zealous in killing the inhabitants of Shechem, but they were motivated by the pain they felt for their sister. They needed to be separated to avoid future destruction but they had the makings of great Mechanchim and transmitters of Torah.…
N
Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive

In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains the meaning of the fact that Parshas Vayechi is setumah (a closed parsha). The eyes and heart of Klal Yisrael became closed when Yaakov Avinu passed away beginning the exile in Mitzrayim. Knowing that we are deeply rooted allows us to find our emotional footing and reclaim our vision even in difficult times.…
In this shiur, delivered at the Almuni Mevaseret Mishmar, Rav Burg explains why it was specifically Yehuda who was sent to establish a Yeshiva in Goshen. While Levi was the Rosh Yeshiva, only Yehuda who had a great enough sense of self to be able to admit to his wrongdoings with Tamar, could establish a Yeshiva in Goshen. Only Yehuda could create a Yeshiva built on kindness and compassion.…
In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explains how the purpose of going into Golus was to bridge the gap between the Avos and Klal Yisrael in order to pass on the pristine emunah that they had achieved.
N
Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive

In this shiur, delivered at the Michlala Chanukah "Culture" Yom Iyun, Rav Burg explains the inner meaning of the word Hod. There is surface beauty that reflects the inner beauty of a person and then there is a beauty that is so awesome that it cannot be captured by the vessel that attempts to contain it. The miracle of Chanukah is that the inner beauty bursts forth and overwhelms the container.…
In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explores the difference between the dreams of Pharoah and the dreams of Yaakov Avinu. Pharaoh dreams that he is standing above the Nile River, Yaakov dreams that Hashem is standing above him. When we dream that we are above God we go back to sleep. When we dream that God is standing above us we are obligated to fulfill the mission for which we were created.…

In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains the inner connection between Yaakov Avinu skipping the Beis HaMikdash and returning to it through Kefitzas HaDerech, the institution of Maariv and Har HaMoriah. When we daven in our lowest moments we can skip over the normal process and find ourselves at untold spiritual heights.…
In this shiur, delivered in the Lubat home in RBS, Rav Burg explains the darkness of Yavan. When man believes that only that which can be explained in a logical and rational fashion exists he puts himself at the center of the universe. This results in a tyrannical approach to the world. In contrast, Judaism believes that the essence of Hashem is beyond human comprehension and from the perspective of the essence all categories fall away. Darkness and light have one shared Godly essence and as a result we are able to illuminate the darkness.…

In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explains how Rivka was confused by her dual nature. Our conflicted nature is not a bug but a feature as we learn to bring Godliness into every aspect of our lives.…
In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains the difference between the way that Avraham engaged with the world and the way Yitzchak engaged with the world. In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explores the Haftorah that deals with the Isha Shunamis who did not ask Elisha for a bracha to have children despite her barren state. In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains (based on a Sicha from the Lubavitcher Rebbe zt"l) the true nature of Mesiras Nefesh. Anyone can sacrifice their life for a greater cause but in a certain way that can still be self serving. The ultimate sacrifice is the sacrifice of Avraham Avinu - he was ready to sacrifice himself. He was ready to destroy everything that was important to him simply because Hashem asked him to. The sacrifice of Akeidas Yitzchak blazed the trail for all Jews throughout time who have not just given up their lives but given up themselves in the service of Hashem.…
In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains how living from a deep place of soulfulness creates our reality. Hagar received messages from four or five angels when she was told that she was going to give birth to Yishmael. This is a reference to the soul itself and when we are deeply connected to our soul, we can bring ourselves into reality.…

In this shiur, delivered on zoom for oravsimcha, Rav Burg explains the Chasidic approach to the role of Malchus. On the one hand Malchus is a Mekabel, actualizing the Sefiros above it and yet paradoxically it is also rooted in the Divine Essence, completely above the Sefiros.
In this shiur, delivered at Thursday night Mishmar in Mevaseret, Rav Burg explains (based on a sicha from the Lubavitcher Rebbe) how Noach knew that the waters of the flood had receded and that it was safe for him to leave the Teiva. We can leave the Teiva when we know that we are essentially Godly (olive trees) and that we can always grow new leaves (freshly plucked). Only then can we confront the challenges of the outside world.…
In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains how Noach failed to help even one person do Teshuva because he didn't daven for them. Davening is a form of imagination. It allows us to see the world as Hashem wants it to be. So too when we daven for someone we are seeing their greatness. People are not inspired by education alone. They need to be taught by a Rebbe who davens for them. Only then will they realize their own greatness.…
In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explains why we praise the Tzaddikim when given the opportunity and why Shem and Yafes did not look at their father when he was uncovered. The way we speak about people and the way we see people has a tremendous impact on them. When we speak/see people negatively we can destroy them. When we see or speak about their beauty we reveal their inner beauty. (Note: Rav Burg asked that it be noted that he forgot to answer why we praise Tzaddikim when given the opportunity. The answer is that when we praise the Tzaddik and speak positively about him we elevate his capacity to fulfill his mission which in turn aids us in fulfilling our mission.)…
In this shiur, delivered at the Vayichan program in Yeshivat HaKotel, Rav Burg explains how we can possibly dance and be joyful during Simchas Torah this year. In this shiur, delivered in NCSY Michlelet, Rav Burg explains why of all people, it is Bilaam HaRasha who transmits the prophecy about the coming of Mashiach. Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive

In this shiur, delivered in the Feder home in Lawrence, Rav Burg discusses (based on a Torah from the Nesivos Shalom and from the Kedushas Levi) the inner connection between the Omer and Bris Milah and why we don't make a shehecheyanu on the Mitzvah of the Omer. While seeing Hashem in the miraculous can jump start a relationship we have only learned about Hashem, we have not yet built a relationship with Hashem. When we find Hashem in nature, we shift our relationship from one of action to one of presence. On Shavuos, through the Korban Todah we have the best of both worlds.…

In this shiur, delivered at the first ever Chizzuk Mission shiur in Los Angeles, Rav Burg discusses why the Torah was given first to women and then afterwards to the men. Only when our children are first given the space to discover who they are can they become something even greater. Even when we are acting in a masculine fashion and putting our imprint on our children, there must be a feminine quality to the way in which we allow our children to become who they truly are.…

In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah (last shiur of the year), Rav Burg explains how Shemita and Yovel rectify the sin of Kayin and Hevel. As one journeys through the story of Kayin and Hevel to Lemech and his wives and four children and finally to Shes and his ultimate descendant Noach it becomes clear that the narrative is about the loss of Tzelem Elokim and the dangers of living in an animal society. Ultimately a society that loses its awareness of its own Godliness will destroy itself. Shemita and Yovel bring us back to true freedom and restore our Godly dignity. If we are going to bring Mashiach we need to put our real feelings on the table and create real peace.…
In this shiur, delivered on NCSY Kollel during Mishmar, Rav Burg explains how Hashem calls out to us through our desires. In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explains a very sophisticated concept from the Lubavitcher Rebbe. The three gates of Nezikin (Babba Kamma, Baba Metzia, Baba Basra) are three steps in mans journey throughout history. We move from barbaric to civilized conflict to Godly harmony. Similarly in our journey towards Hashem we begin by conquering our negative forces, then we conquer our more civilized nature and ultimately we partner with Hashem in building the world into a Godly place.…

In this shiur, delivered to the Shana Bet of Sharfmans, Rav Burg explores an idea from the Alter Rebbe regarding how we receive our life force. Life belongs to Hashem and He gives it to us. Embedded in life itself is giving because that's the nature of how we receive life. Those who use life as it meant to be used receive life in its fullest form. Those that consume life naturally receive less vitality and the nature of the life force that they receive is in exile.…

In this shiur, the final shiur delivered to the Shana Bet of Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explains (based on a piece from Rav Wolbe zt"l) why Yosef HaTzaddik is singled out as having lived in Mitzrayim. The same Yosef HaTzaddik who was a shepherd for his father, is the same Yosef HaTzaddik who is a king in Mitzrayim. How do we stay authentic irrespective of our environment? In this shiur Rav Burg speaks about how Yaakov lived a broad life while Eisav lived a dual life. Yosef, through his Middah of Seder, was the foil for Eisav and stayed true to himself even in the depths of depravity in Mitzrayim.…
In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explores our battle with Amalek. Purim is the Yom Tov that remains even after Yemos HaMashiach. Amalek is the battle that we fight in every generation. Esther HaMalka asks Achashverosh to have another Seuda tomorrow. It seem that everything in our battle with Amalek is future oriented. In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav explains the missing 1775 shekalim from the Mishkan. Their light is absolutely blinding.…
In this shiur, delivered in Aish HaTorah to the Chizzuk Mission, Rav Burg explores how we can increase joy even in times of great tragedy. Rav Akiva woke up his Talmidim by explaining that Esther HaMalka ruled over 127 countries because Sarah Imeinu lived for 127 years. Al though the years of Sarah's life were far from simple, she found the good in every moment and that is how we survive and thrive even in the darkest moments of our exile.…
In this shiur, delivered in Sharfmans, Rav Burg explains why Betzalel and Ohaliav were equal with regards to building the Mishkan. Klal Yisrael required divine inspiration to build the Mishkan. A nation of slaves lacked the artisanal skills that would be necessary for building. Betzalel inspired those who felt worthy but Ohaliav, with his simple background, inspired the lowest of Jews.…

In this week's Parsha the Torah repeats the building of the Mishkan after the Cheit Haeigel. In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains the various aspects of rupture and repair in our relationships. 1. Build something holy. 2. Rupture and repair is a process that happens over and over again. 3. We may return to places we already thought we repaired and that is normal and expected. 4. Our responsibility is to make peace with this process.…
In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explains why the Torah spends 400 Pesukim detailing both how the Mishkan was meant to be made and how it was ultimately made. There is an ideal life and a real life. We should not sacrifice our ideals because the reality is different and we can embrace the beauty of of our reality even when is not ideal.…
In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains why the Luchos could be read from the inside and the outside. There are two ways of relating to Hashem. Outside Torah is scientific and mathematical. This was the Torah of Avraham Avinu. Inside Torah is discovered from within the relationship itself. We can and should discover Hashem not only from the outside but from within the words of Torah, at our Shabbos tables and in our community.…
In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explores why although the world is a fragmented place but we crave wholeness. In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains (based on a piece from Rav Shaul Alter shlit"a) the inner connection between the three times it says the word V'nishma in the Torah. We must know that: 1. We have inside of ourselves the capacity to be totally devoted to Hashem. 2. No matter how far we stray from the path, Hashem always us a relationship with us. 3. Every Jew is a Kohen Gadol, worthy of wearing the robes of nobility.…
In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explains why Moshe Rabbeinu's name is not mentioned specifically in this weeks Parsha. Moshe Rabbeinu argued with Hashem that if Hashem were to destroy the Jewish People then he may as well erase Moshe's name from the Torah. Moshe had become one with the Torah to the degree that it was no longer necessary to mention his name. He was the Torah and the Torah was him. Klal Yisrael, Hashem and the Torah are one. Moshe was one with all of Bnei Yisrael. To destroy Bnei Yisrael would be to destroy the Torah itself. Only though connecting on this essential level can we illuminate the world.…
In this shiur, delivered in Sharfmans, Rav Burg explores (based on a piece from Rav Moshe Weinberger) how Yiras Shomayim is the outer sanctum and Torah is the inner sanctum. One must enter the outer sanctum first, where we feel the pain of exile, before we enter the inner sanctum, the joy of Torah. Although the Beis HaMikdash has been destroyed we still have our Mikdash Mi'at, our Shuls and Yeshivas where we can access the joy of he inner sanctum.…

The fear of losing their relationship with their father caused the Shevatim to tell themselves to tell a story about Yosef that led to their own resentment. This resentment led to the jealousy that ultimately resulted in Yosef's sale. This story was passed down for generations and ultimately led to the Cheit HaEigel. In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains the inner meaning of the Terumas Hadeshen and the Hotza’as Hadeshen. The Terumas Hadeshen reminds us that our parents and grandparents etc... built the community that we now inhabit. This obligates us to build our community for the next generation just as those who came befoe us did. The Hotza’as Hadeshen teaches us that each days Avodah in the Beis HaMikdash begins anew. We must confront the challenges that we face today and live in the present rathet than getting stuck in the past.…
In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explains why although the Aish on the Mizbeach comes from Hashem, the Kohen had to light the fire in the morning. And athough the fire comes from Hashem, we are instructed to protect it when we travel. The nature of life is engaging with suffering but a Jew is thankful for the suffering they endure because that's how we discover Hashem. It will always rain on our fire but we are assured that our fire can never be extinguished. Our job is to chop the wood and protect the fire.…
In this shiur, delivered in Sharfmans, Rav Burg explains why: 1. We are not Yotzei when we read the Megillah backwards. 2. We are obligated to drink until we don't know the difference between Arur Hama and Baruch Mordechai. Who would read the Megillah backwards? Why would we want to get so drunk that we can't distinguish between a Tzaddik and a Rasha? Only when we let go of using knowledge as power and control do we come to accept reality as it is. And once we accept reality as it is it is quite possible that the exact thing we thought was hurting us was our greatest asset.…

In this shiur, delivered in Ba'er Miriam, Rav Burg explains (based on a shiur from Rav Ahron Lopiansky shlit"a) the inner nature of a Korban. A Korban is not a sacrifice, it is a gift that we give to Hashem and the gift that Hashem wants from us is not merely our service but our passion.

In this shiur, delivered in Sharfmans, Rav Burg explains three dimensions of building a relationship with Hashem. 1. Avraham Avinu - Love - Digging Wells 2. Yitzchak Avinu - Fear - Maintaining the Structural Integrity of the Well 3. Yaakov Avinu - Truth - Unplugging the Well
In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explained why: 1. Yaakov was attracted to Rachel. 2. Lavan wanted Yaakov to marry Leah first. 3. How Lavan intended to uproot the entire Jewish Nation. We live within the dialectical tension of being ok and yearning for more. On the one hand we need to be ok with our state of Golus so that we can survive. On the other hand we cannot become complacent and stop yearning for Mashiach.…

In this shiur, delivered at Sharfmans, Rav Burg explains the inner nature of the name Yitzchak and why Yitzchak specifically is described as loving Eisav. Yitzchak laughs because while on the one hand he lives within boundaries, he has the capacity to defy all normal expectations. Some people are able to find light beyond the darkness; Yitzchak can find light within the darkness. Only Yitzchak can see beyond the behavior of Eisav and expect the unexpected.…
In this shiur, delivered at Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explains why it was Yitzchak's Teffilah and not Rivka's Teffilah that was answered when she was unable to have children. Only when we live with a sense of abundance in our lives are we capable of imagining the world in new ways. When we are defined by our past we have an impoverished mentality and our imagination is more limited.…
In this shiur, delivered at the Lubat home in Ramat Beit Shemesh, Rav Burg explains the inner meaning behind the Machlokes between Beis Shammai and Beis Hillel as to how we light the Menorah. In this shiur, delivered at Sharfmans, Rav Burg gives over an idea from Rav Lopiansky shlit"a that reveals the inner nature of Bracha (blessed) and Arur (cursed) . Why is it that Avraham tells Eliezer that he is Arur? How is it that Hashem sends a message to Eliezer through Lavan that he is blessed?!? One who lives an integrity life becomes a conduit for blessing in this world.…
In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explores the three names of Sarah Imeinu, how each one of the names relates to a different Mitzvah. miracle and a particular Avodah of relating to the reality of the world. Important note from Rav Burg: "In the beginning of the shiur I asked a question about how the return of the miracles consoled Yitzchak but neglected to answer the question. I apologize. The answer is that because Sarah Imeinu was able to discover Godliness on all three levels (disavowal, refinement and sublimation) her impact on this world transcended her death. Until Rivka came onto the scene, her impact was not felt and this was what Yitzchak was grieving. He could not understand how his mothers Avodah was somehow discontinued. When Rivka married Yitzchak she took on the countenance of Sarah Imeinu and in a certain sense, she became her. The miracles were once again brought back into reality and this is how Yitzchak was consoled. Through Rivka he understood how his mothers impact continued to be a part of this world."…

This shiur, delivered in Yeshivat HaKotel for the newly formed Acheinu program, explores the nature of the world pre-flood and post-flood. Pre-flood the world received its Godliness from Hashem whereas post-flood the world discovered its Godliness from within. This change was brought about through two mechanisms: 1. the flood 2. the Teiva. The flood of life destroys all of our toxic systems and the Teiva is where we discover our inner strength.…

Noach would not leave the Teiva until the dove returned with an olive leaf in his mouth. But where would a dove get an olive leaf from? The Medrash provides us with two solutions: Gan Eden or Eretz Yisrael. What is the inner meaning of retrieving an olive leaf from these two places? In this shiur, Rav Burg explores how we can return to our lives after the flood of destruction. How do we know that it is safe to leave the Teiva? When we discover that our inner essence is untainted, the essential self that never participated in our lowest moments and even the essence of our lowest parts that did things we are not proud of, it gives us the feeling of safety to return to the vulnerabilities of life.…

As Hashem sees us putting the needs of others before our own, He in turn puts our needs before His own and redeems us even if we are unworthy.…

In this shiur, delivered to Mevaseret alumni at Lander College for Men, Rav Burg explains why Yehuda said that their brother (Yosef) had died. Rashi teaches that Yehuda lied to avoid having to produce Yosef. On a level of Drush, Rav Burg explains that to impact Yosef, Yehuda knew that he needed to speak words from the heart. In an honest moment Yehuda came to the recognition that Yosef could not have survived Mitzrayim without his brothers.…

Why would this cause Yaakov to love Yosef? What type of father loves his son who tells evil tales about his children? The Ruzhiner explains that in truth Yosef HaTzaddik was being Melamed Zechus on his brothers and seeing them through the lens of positivity is what brings Hashem the ultimate Nachas. In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explores the topic of seeing the sounds by Har Sinai. The Zohar HaKadosh takes this literally. The inner message of this teaching is that Yiddishkeit needs to be something visible and visceral. We cannot teach the menu of Shabbos without teaching the majesty of Shabbos. If we are going to be Hashem's loyal servants, when the mountain of Har Sinai is held over our heads and a deep hester panim has set in, we must be able to draw from the strength of our relationship with Hashem.…

As the beginning of Maggid, Ha Lachma Anya contains within it all of Maggid. And yet it is a section of the Haggadah that makes very little sense. In contrast to the rest of the Haggadah it is written in Aramaic. Why? Ha Lachma Anya does not seem to have anything to do with Maggid. Why is it placed there? This is not the bread that our forefathers ate in Mitzrayim, it's the food that they ate when they left Mitzrayim? The Magen Avraham says that we ought to say "This is "like" the food that they ate..." but the Mogen Avraham says lo hifsid if we say it according to our current girsa. Why doesn't the Magen Avraham mandate that we say "like"? Why does he allow the current girsa? He even makes it sound like it is correct and that we have lost nothing by saying the current girsa? This is obviously not an invitation - that should have happened in Shul. At the very least before Kiddush so that the person being invited could have had the first cup of wine. The door is not even opened! What's the difference between those who are hungry and those who are needy? What does it mean to invite some to celebrate Pesach with us? They can't join us in the Korban Pesach, it's too late! They have to be included before the Korban was shechted. What's the difference between now we are here and now we are slaves? What's the connection between all three of these things? In this shiur, delivered in Monsey, Rav Burg explains how we are still in Egypt and the process of leaving Mitzrayim is the story of our entire history. Ha Lachma Anya is a road map for how we leave Mitzrayim. 1 - We recognize our state of being in Mitzrayim. 2 - We realize that we are part of something larger than ourselves. We contribute to those who are in need. We recognize how we are needed in the world. 3 - We hold on to the hope and vision of redemption being both physical and essential.…

Why did he not just instruct them to take the Atzei Shitim from Mitzrayim? Or better yet, just take them from the Midbar and not have to carry them throughout the desert? In this shiur Rav Burg explores the part of us that is foolish. On the one hand we can fall into the foolishness of sin and on the other hand we can be so foolish as to believe in and achieve the impossible. A Jew must take the Atzei Shitim, tress of folly, from Eretz Yisrael so that they may have hope in Mitzrayim and build a dwelling place for Hashem down below.…

Rashi tells us that Yisro heard about the splitting of the sea and the war with Amalek. This is difficult to understand since the passuk tells us that Yisro heard everything that happened. Why do Chazal highlight these two events? In this shiur Rav Burg explains that difference between excitement and inspiration. Az Yashir is the source for techias hameisim in the Torah. What is the connection between techias hameisim and singing? 3. Every morning we sing Az Yashir in Pesukei D'zimra. P"D is about praise and thanksgiving for the greatness of Hashem. Az Yashir does not fit this theme. 4. The Gemara in Megillah (16b) teaches that the sections of the Torah involving Shirah need to be written “ariach al gabei leveinah” the script of the line above is written over the empty space of the line below it, in a bricklaying pattern. Rashi comments that there is actually more empty space than words in the Shirah – more blanks than writing. What is the inner significance of this format? Rav Burg explains that Judaism has a body and a soul. The halacha is the body but emunah is the soul. Through our connection to the soul of Yiddishkeit, not only can we survive in Golus but we can even sing.…
Why is the name of the Parsha Beshalach when there are so many aspects of the Parsha (Krias Yam Suf, the descent of the Mann and Milchemes Amalek) that seem to be more important? Why is it that Pharaoh needs to compel us to leave Mitzrayim? In this shiur, Rav Burg explains how we are brought down into this world to transform the Pharaoh in our lives. Additionally, only through being absolutely compelled to leave Mitzrayim have we truly gone free.…

The Halachos of Shlucho Shel Adam Kamoso is learned out from the Parsha of Korban Pesach. Why specifically this Parsha? Moshe Rabbeinu is the ultimate Shliach of Hashem and yet he is at first hesitant to accept the mission. Why? In this shiur, Rav Burg explains how if we want to leave the Mitzrayims of our lives and experience true redemption we must transcend our own ego and nullify ourselves to Hashem. In this way we become true emissaries of Hashem in this world.…
Each of the ten Makkos that destroyed Mitzrayim taught invaluable lessons about the dysfunctionality of Mitzrayim. In this shiur, based on a sicha from the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rav Burg explores the Makka of Barad, hail. The unique nature of the hail in Mitzrayim was that it was fire covered in ice. Why did Hashem create the hail in this fashion? We must make sure in life not just to engage the cold exterior but to rectify the fire of the ego that burns within the coldness of a person.…

In a consumeristic culture we have lost sight of what our relationship with Hashem is all about. In this shiur Rav Burg explains how we tend to "sell" Judaism to our youth rather than teach them that they have obligations and reponsibilities to participate in our relationship with Hashem. Each of us has a unique Godly soul and we are meant to contribute to this world.…

1 Dignity in Focus Challenge (Tomer Devorah Awards Dinner) - Rav and Rebbetzin Burg (shiur plus Q&A) 57:09
For several years Tomer Devorah runs a DIF (Dignity in Focus) challenge that culminates with a dinner for the winners. Rav Burg spoke about dignity as a shemira and Rebbetzin Burg spoke about Tznius as creating space for another.…
In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explores the Mitzvah of Shemitta. Why does the Torah indicate that Shemitta was to be kept immediately upon entering Eretz Yisrael when in fact it was only kept seven years later? What is the inner connection between Matan Torah and Har Sinai? Why does the Torah record the question of those Jews who wondered what they would eat after the Shemitta year rather just giving the answer as the Torah generally does? Rav Burg explains the difference between a scarcity mentality and an abundance mentality and how the Mitzvah of Shemitta restores us to our original settings on an even higher level.…

In this shiur, delivered on the NCSY staff training Shabbaton, Rav Burg explains the secret story behind the Mekalel and what led him to curse Hashem and scoff at the Lechem HaPanim. In this shiur, based on a Sicha from the Lubavitcher Rebbe zt"l, Rav Burg highlights the needs for structure in order to be successful. In the Beis HaMikdash the Kohanim were vigilant because the environment was permeated with Kedusha. Outside of the Beis HaMikdash, Moshe Rabbeinu ensured that they were overseen by the Beis Din in oder to ensure their continued vigilance in the area of Kedusha. While we have created wonderful structures for women today, we must do more to ensure their continued success after seminary. Rav Burg gives several practical ideas for women who want to structure themselves for success.…

In this shiur, delivered in Mevaseret at the start of Kayitz Zman, Rav Burg explains how Moshe Rabbeinu wanted Rav Akiva to take the Jews out of Mitzrayim. Because Rav Akiva achieved understanding of the fiftieth level of Binah he was able to see through to the essence of even someone who had fallen into the lowest level of Tumah and to redeem them. Rav Burg explains how when we learn Torah we have to see not only the words of Torah but the crowns, the essence, that is within those words. True Torah must draw us closer to every other Jew.…
In this shiur, based on a sicha from the Lubavitcher Rebbe zt"l, Rav Burg explains the concepts of Ratzo and Shov, three perspectives as to how Hashem relates to creation and how Rabbah Bar Nachmeini was able to see the purity in every single Jew, even those who were persecuting him.

In this shiur, delivered to the Nshei of Neve Shamir, Rav Burg explains the Zohar HaKadosh which speaks about Moshe Rabbeinu confronting the inner essence of Pharaoh, namely arrogance. Arrogance is built on the impoverished mentality that we are not enough and allows us to do despicable things to uphold this false notion of self. On a deeper level, even our arrogance comes from the Divine but it is a misappropriation. Once we realize that everything comes from Hashem, even our arrogance, redemption occurs.…

Question - If Rebbe were to give shiur about things to keep in mind and be conscious of when building a home of shalom bayis what would be the number one thing that Rebbe would speak about? What is that one factor that will create a strong home of Shalom Bayis? In this shiur, Rav Burg answers this question by examining the enlarged Beis in the word Bereishis and the small Aleph in the word Vayikra. True humility means stepping up to the call of the mission for which we were created (to sustain the world) and stepping back to create space for another in our lives.…
In this shiur Rav Burg gave over two pieces from the Aish Kodesh. Vayechi - In this piece the Aish Kodesh teaches us how Yaakov Avinu being "blocked off" from revealing the end of days to his children was actually a sign of the redemption itself. When the damage of Golus reaches cosmic levels Hashem will surely bring the Geula. Vaeira - In this piece the Aish Kodesh teaches us the difference between chein, chesed and rachamim. Chein and Chesed have nothing to do with being judged. We find grace in Hashem's eyes not because we are worthy or unworthy but simply because. Similarly, Hashem does Chesed for us because he is the ultimate Baal Chesed, not because we are deserving. When it comes to Rachamim, mercy, we are in a state of judgement and Hashem finds something within us that we can be deserving of His mercy. Moshe Rabbeinu is commanded to treat Klal Yisrael gently because Pharaoh was working Klal Yisrael to death. In such a state they needed chein and chesed, not rachamim.…
Moshe Rabbeinu wonders about the reason Klal Yisrael has not left Mitzrayim. Initially he believes that Klal Yisrael needs a warrior to teach them their strength but ultimately he learns that the reason Klal Yisrael has not left Mitzrayim is because of their lack of Achdus. To redeem Klal Yisrael Moshe Rabbeinu must learn to become a shepherd, taking care of the young sheep that has strayed from the rest of the flock. In this shiur Rav Burg explains the three lessons that Moshe Rabbeinu learned as a shepherd and how we can bring redemption in our generation by employing these very same lessons.…

There are various opinions regarding the origin of Moshe Rabbeinu's name. There are those that maintain that it is a Hebrew name while others maintain that it is an Egyptian name. If Klal Yisrael is redeemed in the merit of not changing their names, how could Moshe Rabbeinu himself have an Egyptian name? In this shiur Rav Burg explains the true nature of golus. A light descends into the darkness of golus to emerge greater than before. The Chutzpah of Pharaoh gives rise to an even greater and holier Chutzpah from the daughter of Pharaoh. It is that holy Chutzpah that Moshe Rabbeinu embodies as he redeems us from Mitzrayim.…

Based on brilliant and novel insight the Lubavitcher Rebbe zt'l, Rav Burg explains how each name of the parshios of Bereishis represents another stage in the development of the history of the world.
The challenge of parenting in today's generation may feel enormous. Yosef HaTzaddik teaches us that even in the most difficult circumstances we are all capable of raising children like Menashe and Ephraim. Our children have two parts: Menashe - the parts they would like to forget and Ephraim - the parts they value. In this shiur, based on the Degel Machaneh Ephraim, Rav Burg explains how we must parent our children to know that the Menashe part of them is not who they truly are. And rather than feeling deeply ashamed of these parts we must understand that we will become great because of them.…
Yosef HaTzaddik reveals himself to his brothers and asks "Is my father still alive?" Of course he is alive! The brothers have been talking about Yaakov throughout their entire time in Mitzrayim. The journey of life can be terrifying. How do we maintain our strength and resolve? The loving words of a parent can stay with us for a lifetime.…
Yehuda tells Yosef do not get angry for you are like Pharaoh himself. The worst way to get someone to calm down is to tell them to calm down. Why would Yehuda tell Yosef not to get angry? In this shiur Rav Burg explains the difference between an abundance mentality and an impoverished mentality as it relates to parenting and relationships with our spouses. Yehudas words give us insight into how we can be enough for ourselves.…
Yaakov blesses his children that the Egyptian ruler should have mercy on them. The Aish Kodesh asks, why doesn't he bless them that no harm should befall them. Just as Hashem creates an expanding universe and tells it to stop expanding so too there are different types of salvations. Sometimes salvation comes from an expanding process. You go to the doctor who diagnoses an illness, procure the medicine etc... Sometimes, if there is no time for an expanding process, Hashem says enough to the expansion. The salvation must come immediately. This is the deeper meaning of Hashem creating the world with middas harachamim before middas hadin. The mercy of Hashem bring a salvation immediately without any process needing to unfold.…
Delivered to the Shana Bet in Mevaseret for Erev Shabbos Mussar, Rav Burg discusses why the Mitzvah of Ner Chanuka is on the home, the reason for the precedence of Ner Shabbos over Ner Chanukah and the last zman for Ner Chanukah is when the tarmudai would come home from the Shuk. The outside influences of immorality have made an impact on our community. In order to transmit Yiddishkeit it needs to be pure through and through. Chazal tells us that Yosef HaTzaddik would tell Yaakov Avinu about all of the misdeeds of the shevatim. If there was anything to tell, he would run to his father to share with him the bad news. Why? In this shiur, Rav Burg explains that lonely children will push away the very people they want to connect with. The journey of Yosef HaTzaddik is our journey. Does the sun not rise for everyone. Rav Akiva answers that the sun that set for Yaakov Avinu when he left his father's home now rose for him as well. We must have faith that the sun will rise once again and though it may be dark times, the dawn is certainly coming.…

Everything the Torah tells us is to impart cosmic and timeless lessons. It is therefore all the more surprising that the Torah, seemingly out of nowhere, tells us about the death of Devorah, the wet nurse of Rivka. Why do we need to know about this? In this week's Parsha Yaakov Avinu fell asleep at the Makom Hamikdash and dreamt of Malachim going up and down a ladder. Chazal tell us that Hashem had to protect Yaakov from these Malachim who wanted to kill him. The Ksav Sofer explains that they wanted to kill Yaakov because he fell asleep at such a holy place. The Gemara tells us that Hashem made the sun set early so that Yaakov Avinu would go to sleep. If that's the case then why would the Malachim want to kill him? He was simply doing what Hashem wanted!?! And is sleeping in the Makom Hamikdash worthy of the death penalty??? In this shiur, delivered in California, Rav Burg explains how we are meant to build a dwelling place for Hashem in our world. 1. The story of Eliezer finding a shidduch for Yitzchak comprises 67 pesukim in the Torah! Normally the Torah is concise but here Hashem sees fit to tell us the story in great detail. Why? 2. Eliezer gives Rivka a golden nose ring worth half a shekel and two bracelets each worth ten gold shekel. Rashi teaches that the nose ring is an allusion to the half a shekel that would one day be donated to the Mishkan and the bracelets are an allusion to the aseres hadibros. What does this have to do with marriage? Why does Eliezer see fit to bring these concepts to mind now? 3. The half shekel was a tikkun for the cheit haegel. Hashem showed Moshe a half shekel on fire because he could not understand how half a shekel could bring an atonement for such a terrible aveira. How does the fiery coin answer Moshe's question. In this shiur Rav Burg explains how these two gifts teach Rivka about having a healthy, non codependent relationship. Like the half shekel she is missing her other half but like the bracelets she is already whole. Being one half of a whole allows us to apologize and to forgive our spouse. Being whole means we allow our spouse to share their lives with us and we in turn share our lives with them.…
In this exceptionally stirring shiur the Aish Kodesh asks why Hashem won't allow the tzaddikim to have serenity in this world. The Rebbe distinguishes between those who are silent because they choose not to speak and those who are mute because they have loss all capacity to process their trauma and give language to their pain. Still, even in this state, the mute person can gesture and communicate somewhat. Deeper still is the person whose pain is so exceptional that they cannot communicate their pain on any level. Their muteness is absolute. The Tzaddik who finds himself in such a state finds a way to cry out to Hashem and raise others up with him. The Tzaddik cannot be serene in such a state. He cannot accept his own pain and live a muted life. As he rises up he brings others with him. The Aish Kodesh had suffered heavy losses in his own life and in this shiur we gain insight into how to Aish Kodesh overcame his own pain and raised others with him.…

Eliezer is the ultimate servant of Avraham Avinu and yet despite his exceptional dedication Avraham Avinu does not see fit to make a shidduch with the daughter of Eliezer. Why then does he trust Eliezer to find a shidduch for Yitzchak? If Eliezer is trustworthy enough to make a shidduch, why is his daughter not a good match for Yitzchak? The Gemara in Brachos teacehs that one who has a makom kavua is an anav, a chasid and a talmid of Avraham Avinu. They have a greater level of siyata dishmaya in their teffilos. What is the significance of a makom kavua? In this shiur, Rav Burg explains how through Teffillah we stay grounded in a chaotic world.…

Why does the Malach ask Yaakov Avinu his name? The Rebbe explains that it is not enough simply to leave our state of pain. Delivered at Yeshivat HaKotel's Vayichan program on Hoshana Rabbah, based on a sicha from the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rav Burg explains how it is the simple Jews that reflect Hashem's essence in this world. Complexity hides Hashem's simple presence in creation. The greater the complexity, the greater the concealment. The simple Jew who serves Hashem simply because they're Jewish lacks the concealment of more complex Jews. The Aravos of Hoshana Rabbah are different than the aravos of the dalet minim. Though they both represent the simple Jews, the aravos of Hoshana Rabbah are not impacted in any way by the sophistication of the other minim. In that way, Hoshana Rabbah highlights the beauty of the simple Jews.…
As Yaakov Avinu is sleeping and dreaming of the malachim going up and down the ladder, Rashi explains that it is Hashem who is guarding over him. The Aish Kodesh asks, why is it Hashem guarding over Yaakov and not a malach? Why does it repeat that he is being guarded twice? The Malachim of the ladder represent the nations of the world who are at war with each other. When they are fighting, Klal Yisrael is in danger. In these times we need the special shemira of Hashem Himself. When we have no zechusim of our own, we are still the children of the Avos and Hashem watches over us in their merit. The Rebbe explains that there is a difference between that which is written and that which is spoken. That which is spoken does not last but that which is written can be taken with us. The Rebbe calls upon us, in times of great struggle, to write our inspiration on our hearts so we can take it with us.…

The Rebbe teaches that there are two types of Jews, those who are lost and those are completely unrecognizable. This kinnah, the last of the kinnos, is a kinnah of hope. It speaks about the pain of a woman in labor and the pain of a young bride who lost her husband. The cry of labor is a cry that understands that while this may be exceptionally painful it is for an ultimate purpose. The cry of a young bride is a cry that speaks to the absolute chaos of this world. In her grief, as she refuses to let go of her husband who has passed on, she is giving language to her eternal love and the hope that she will one day be reunited with her husband. We are tasked to live within the tension of both cries, both of which give us an infinite sense of hope. (This kinnah was given over in NCSY Kollel)…
The challenge of Tisha B'Av is that we are being called upon to feel the pain of the loss of the Beis HaMikdash when we have never experienced the Beis HaMikdash. What we can feel is the pain of the shechina who longs to have a place in our world once again. Feeling the pain of another requires a strong sense of self which can only come from tapping in to the Godly soul that dwells within each of us. In this shiur, delivered at NCSY Kollel on Tisha B'Av, Rav Burg takes us through three stories, the story of Kamtza and Bar Kamtza, the story of Tur Malka, and the story of Beitar, amd shows how in each of these stories a lack of self expressed itself in the lack of feeling for another.…

Three times in the Torah לה is spelled without a mapik hey (a dot in the middle of the hey). The final passuk in this week's Parsha is one of those times. Rashi, quoting Rav Moshe HaDarshan explains that without the mapik hey the word can also be read לא. In this context it would indicate that while Novach did conquer Knas and name it after himself, ultimately the name of the city did not last. The question is, why is this an important idea for the Torah to convey? What is the eternal message being communicated to us? In this shiur (delivered on NCSY KOLLEL during Mishmar) Rav Burg explores why Torah is compared to fire, the importance of serving Hashem with love, how we can develop true passion for Torah and why only through passion is our Yidishkeit sustained.…

How can Hashem regret something if He is perfect? The Aish Kodesh explains that Hashem regrets, so to speak, the pain that he has caused Klal Yisrael. Full Teshuva is not only limited to causing Klal Yisrael no more tzaros but a full restoration to our destiny. Furthermore, the Aish Kodesh explains that we are obligated to do teshuva in the same fashion. It is not enough to stop sinning, we must become growth oriented people. In so doing the movement down below creates an awakening from above and will bring salvation to Klal Yisrael.…

Rashi explains that it comes to teach us that while Moshe was concerned about the future leadership of Klal Yisrael, Hashem asks Moshe, who will take care of me when you are gone? This is a shocking Rashi! Is Hashem lacking? Why is Hashem concerned for Himself so to speak? In this shiur, quoting the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rav Burg explores the topic of Hashem's perfection and how each and every Jew infinitely matters.…
In this final segment of the derasha on Rosh Hashanah the Aish Kodesh addresses the issue of the prosecuting angels that challenge the veracity of our teffilos and teshuva. Are we really crying out to connect to Hashem or are we just trying to solve our pain? Are we doing Teshuva because we really mean it, or are we doing teshuva because that's what Yidden do at this time of the year? The Aish Kodesh assures us that when we sincerely cry out to Hashem from a place of yishuv hadaas, Hashem silences the prosecuting angels and returns us to Him. In that context even our personal requests to be removed from our state of pain are considered a praise to Hashem.…

This week's Parsha is a master class on how to respond when you find yourself in a chaotic relationship. Korach is the archetypal narcissist who seeks to control others. While he appears to have a noble mission, in truth it is just a way of elevating himself. Moshe Rabbeinu's response teaches us how we ought to behave when we find ourselves in similar situations. In this shiur Rav Burg explains how we develop a healthy sense of self, the repercussions of falling out of self, and how to engage in an appropriate fashion when interacting with someone who tries to subsume you within their being.…
In this shiur the Aish Kodesh explains how even asking Hashem for our personal needs is an expression of Hashem's revelation in this world and our acceptance of kabalas ol malchus shomayim. When we have the abundance mentality that comes with knowing that Hashem is forgiving we can truly participate in the relationship and take ownership of our sins.…
In this shiur the Aish Kodesh explains the difference in yiras shomayim between those with the impoverished mentality which comes from sitting in the filth of their own sins and those who have an abundance mentality. The former have yiras haonesh, fear of punishment, while the latter experience the grandeur and majesty of the Master of the World.…

Chazal teach us that Moshe Rabbeinu was treated as a father to Aaron's children because he taught them Torah. But the Lubavitcher Rebbe zt"l (with a careful reading of Rashi) shows that we are meant not only to teach our children Torah but to give our encounter with the Divine.

In this shiur Rav Burg explains why on Pesach we begin our journey with only Matzah and yet as soon as Pesach is over we return to Chametz. If Chametz is so bad why do we ever allow Chametz to be eaten? Furthermore, on Shavuos, not only do we allow for Chametz, we celebrate Chametz with the bringing of the shtei halechem. Rav Burg explains that Pesach, Sefiras Haomer and Shavuos represent the development of a healthy relationship with Hashem. Accordingly Chametz is asur at the beginning and celebrated at the end. (Fundamental insights into the nature of building our personal relationships are expressed as well.)…

The Megaleh Amukos connects the death of the 24000 talmidim of Rav Akiva to the 24000 that died in the plague after Klal Yisrael were mezaneh with the Bnos Moav and worshipped Baal Peor. The Arizal connects their death to the 24000 people of Shechem that Shimon and Levi killed in the aftermath of Dina being violated by Shechem. What is the connection between these events? At first glance it seems that the only connection is the fact that there were 24000 deaths. In this shiur Rav Burg explains how these events are connected and how each moment of our lives is designed for us to to transform disgrace into dignity.…

This is the subject of a dispute between Rabban Gamliel and Rav Elazar ben Azaryah.…
