La Tajhsha Farrell (The autobiography of a teacher who overcame speech impairment)
Manage episode 382262135 series 3325229
I didn't start speaking until I was five years old. My mother and grandma were baffled as to why I couldn't speak, so they used their contacts to find a speech therapist for me and informed me that I had no chance of ever speaking. At age 5, I uttered my first word, "Gamma." When they heard my first word, my mother and grandmother burst into tears. After I uttered my first word, I continued my studies until I reached adulthood while also pursuing a career in child development.I attended Valley College after high school to earn two AAs in child development and liberal arts and humanities in the fine arts. I transferred to Walden University after graduating from Valley College to complete my BS and MS in Early Childhood. Parents who inform me that their child is learning things in a different way from them receive my response, "It would be okay because children develop differently and it takes time for them." I experienced it as I was growing up as well. Parents were motivated by what I had to say and felt that their children had a chance to succeed in life in whatever they choose.
