Community College to NYU: Talking Transfer ‘Transplants'

In this episode, we sat down with Jacqueline Banegas-Abreu, the Associate Director of NYU's Community College Transfer Opportunity Program, to talk about the role of private universities in outreaching to and supporting transfer students throughout their educational journey. Jacci discusses the importance of intentional marketing, approaching initiative planning with a student-first perspective, and the nuances of advocacy work. The conversation also hits on the idea of redefining transfer programs as 'transplant' programs to recognize and build tailored support off of the fact that transitioning to a four-year university is an intensive uprooting and reacclimating process that transfer students must undertake. Jacci also fills us in on her doctoral program work and research progress.

The Community College Transfer Opportunity Program (CCTOP) is a scholarship and assistance program for students transferring from partnership community colleges into NYU. Founded nearly 30 years ago, CCTOP aims to promote an accessible transfer experience for students across 14 community colleges by providing pre-transfer advising and transitional support services.
