Wednesday, May 1, 2024. Imagine a thousand-pound moose only 50 yards away and glaring at you; whatever your next move, choose it well. Every day, men face daunting challenges that deserve careful analysis and strategic action, whether that means avoiding a hard knock or recovering from one. In episode 9, Rob Stout presents the third in a series focusing on overcoming the hard knocks of life.

Recap: In episode 7, Rob walked through two approaches to understanding hard knocks – the Elitist approach, and the Eeyore approach. The former says, “I am above this hard knock.” The latter says, “Just my luck. This hard knock is my fate.” The third and better approach is the Now What mindset, where a man (1) “Embraces the suck” of the hard knock, and (2) Calls the hard knock “joy.”

In Episode 8, Rob walked through three manifestations of that third approach of embracing the suck and calling it joy. These are the “Now What’s?”

Now What #1: When you get knocked down, REACH OUT. Don’t medicate with isolation, drugs, alcohol, porn, food, or anything else. Reach out to a fellow man for helping getting through this hard knock.

Now What #2: When a friend gets knocked down, JUMP IN. Be the man who jumps into the pit with other men struggling through their hard knocks.

Now What #3: When you get knocked down, REACH UP. Get real with God and take him at his offer – He really does want to be in relationship with you.

In Episode 9, Rob dives into the pragmatics of facing and overcoming your hard knocks: (1) Get Sick and Tired of the status quo; (2) Get Moving; and (3) Make a Plan.

Show Notes

In Episode 9, Rob references the parable of the Prodigal Son, a teaching by Jesus about a son who comes to regret foolishly spending his inheritance on partying and is amazed to discover that his father never stopped loving him. The story is one of the most famous in the Bible, and is recorded in the gospel of Luke, chapter 15, verses 11-32. You can read it here, or you can read it in your own Bible. Don’t have a Bible? Sherpa 5280 would love to provide you one, free of charge. Just email TheNextStage@Sherpa5280.com.
