Hope is Here in the person of Jesus! Does the reality of that statement create an awe that takes your breath away? For many of us, the unconvinced or the convinced, not much creates a state of awe in us. We live in a culture that has basically stripped all of our awe away. Just think of the news that has caught or even captivated your attention recently. The awful gets our attention, but not the awesome. Mary, the mother of Jesus, had a moment to decide whether the news of Gabriel was awful or awesome. She decided awesome and responded: “I belong to the Lord, body and soul,” replied Mary, “let it happen as you say.” And at this the angel left her. (Luke 1:38 Phillips) What would it take for our awes to be more on the side of awesome rather than awful? We will try to unpack that idea in this message, as we learn what it means to live out of the reality that Hope Is Here, especially for the fearful!…

Many times in our lives, we have all felt like calling out, "I need saving and I need it now!" When was the last time you felt that way? Who did you call out to? What happened? In Mark 11:1-11 (page 691 in an SCC chair rack Bible), the people of Jerusalem lined up and shouted "Hosanna!" to Jesus as He entered the city. "Hosanna!" is a Hebrew expression that means "Save!" Do you think the people saw how much they needed a Hosanna life-change? Do we see that need in our lives today? You want to talk about something that can be too hot to touch? How about raising kids? Everybody has an opinion on that and it's easy to be silenced. This Sunday, we will be talking about influencing the kids in your life. This isn't just for parents, it is for all of us.
This Sunday we might find that love can be as hot too touch as submission, but when the two are combined and held well, you will never want to let go of them.
In our message this Sunday, we will be trying to unpack a concept that can be just too hot handle and too prickly to pick up for anyone, but especially Christ-followers. Yet, you can't be in a successful relationship, especially a marriage, without trying to figure what this topic means for a Christ-follower today. That topic is Submission. God inspired Paul to write these words: Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Ephesians 5:21 NIV Next Paul applies it to married life: Wives, understand and support your husbands in ways that show your support for Christ. The husband provides leadership to his wife the way Christ does to his church, not by domineering but by cherishing. So just as the church submits to Christ as he exercises such leadership, wives should likewise submit to their husbands. What's the first thing you do when you are having trouble sleeping? I try not to get irritated. If I do, I will be up for a while. Just this past week, (sorry Cindy) one night after I had fallen asleep, Cindy dropped her phone or something (we haven't even talked about it - Cindy, when you see this, text me what it was and I do forgive you). The bang woke me right up. Immediately, I repeated silently "Don't get irritated" about 3-5 times and fortunately I drifted off to sleep. Most sleepless nights, the first thing that comes to mind is not that maybe God's providence is in play. Maybe He wants me awake for me to do something like pray. Gone with the Wind (1939) "I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse." The Godfather (1972) "Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore.” The Wizard of Oz (1939) "Here's looking at you, kid.” Casablanca (1942) "Go ahead, make my day.” Sudden Impact (1983) “May the Force be with you.” Star Wars (1977) “E.T. phone home” (1982) “You can’t handle the truth!” A Few Good Men (1992) “My precious” The Lord of the Rings: The Two towers (2002) “I feel the need-the need for speed!” Top Gun (1986) “Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary!” Dead Poets Society (1989) What would you add to the list? We have been riveted to the news this week as one country that seems to be lead by one man, a Haman-like character, has moved to cancel another nation and its leadership. We can't, or don't want to, imagine being in that place and are praying hard against the unnecessary bloodshed. Hope is Here - Part 4: Forgotten by Dave Spencer
Hope is Here in the person of Jesus! Does the reality of that statement create an awe that takes your breath away? For many of us, the unconvinced or the convinced, not much creates a state of awe in us. Actually, we live in a culture that has basically stripped all of our awe away. The awful gets our attention, but not the awesome. Just think of the news that has caught or even captivated your attention. Solomon wrote: The starting point for acquiring wisdom is to be consumed with awe as you worship Yahweh (one of the many Hebrew words for God). To receive the revelation of the Holy One, you must come to the one who has living-understanding. Proverbs 9:10 TPT Mary, the mother of Jesus, had a moment to decide whether the news of Gabriel was awful or awesome. She decided awesome and responded: “I belong to the Lord, body and soul,” replied Mary, “let it happen as you say.” And at this the angel left her. Luke 1:38 Phillips What would it take for our awes to be more on the side of awesome rather than awful? We will try to unpack that idea in this message, as we learn what it means to live out of the reality that Hope Is Here, especially for the fearful!…
Hope really is here in the person of Jesus! We don’t have to wait for it! But (you knew there was one) often when the expression of hope (Jesus) is not what we expected, after time we are left discouraged, heartbroken, and yes, even skeptical. This is the place we find Elizabeth (Jesus' mother Mary's cousin) and Zechariah as they process their lives with a delayed realization of hope. Luke described the couple this way: Zechariah and Elizabeth were both good people who pleased God. They did everything the Lord commanded, always following his instructions completely. Luke 1:6 ERV At first glance it doesn't add up that "good people who pleased God" waited almost a lifetime for a response from God. God is quiet, yet Elizabeth and Zechariah don't quit on Him. It is remarkable that God's lack of a response doesn't seem to affect their response to Him. Christmas is a time of anticipation. Children anticipate that toy they have longed for. We anticipate a specific gift, sometimes just hoping it’s money and not a sweater. The older word Advent focuses our anticipation on what Christmas originally was all about. In this message, we’ll look at another challenging subject for parents and others trying to influence the next generation - Correcting Kids. Before you stop reading, especially if you believe influencing kids is outside your wheelhouse, realize that all of us, at every age and stage of life, need to first look at our own relationship with our Heavenly Father before thinking about correcting kids. As a Christ follower, it all starts there! Even if you don't consider yourself a Christ follower, there is a basic question that needs to be answered, “What do you do with correction in your own life?” We need to think about how we process that answer before we correct anyone else's life. Join us as we look at what it means to Correct Kids and what the implications are for us, no matter what our stage or age is. We will begin with a letter written to the Hebrews. The Hebrews lived in a difficult world similar to ours. This is what the writer says: …have you forgotten how good parents treat children, and that God regards you as his children? My dear child, don’t shrug off God’s discipline, but don’t be crushed by it either. It’s the child he loves that he disciplines; the child he embraces, he also corrects. God is educating you; that’s why you must never drop out. He’s treating you as dear children. This trouble you’re in isn’t punishment; it’s training, the normal experience of children. Only irresponsible parents leave children to fend for themselves. Would you prefer an irresponsible God? We respect our own parents for training and not spoiling us, so why not embrace God’s training so we can truly live? While we were children, our parents did what seemed best to them. But God is doing what is best for us, training us to live God’s holy best. At the time, discipline isn’t much fun. It always feels like it’s going against the grain. Sometimes we are walking ourselves into a setup and don't even realize it. This can be disastrous when it happens spiritually, especially when we don't understand the difference between a promise and a principle in the Bible. For example: A gentle answer turns away wrath... Proverbs 15:1 NIV When you expect this Proverb to be a promise, you can be hurt, discouraged, and even disillusioned with God when you give a gentle answer and it doesn't turn away wrath. If you take it as a principle, you'll normally expect a gentle answer to turn away wrath and you have a direction for difficult conversations, something to try in a heated moment. In this message, we will take a look at another spiritual principle that when taken as a promise can be spiritually dangerous.…

When did you get your first cell phone? What kind was it? What did it do for you? For many of us, our cell phones have come a long way since that first one. Somewhere along the way, those phones we went from just making calls to doing almost everything BUT making calls. Subtly, they have taken over to the point where many of us get a little nervous if we leave the house without it. That brings us to the question, "Do we use our phones (technology) or do they use us?" "Have our devices become our vices?" We could make the point, by experience, that if we are not intentional with technology, it will steal from us our margin physically, mentally, emotionally, relationally, and spiritually.
