Kara Swisher 導聽第二講: 為什麼她的訪談風格讓科技大老們又愛又恨
Manage episode 358287617 series 2780350
英文敘述
Kara Swisher has a remarkable personal story. When she was five, her father suddenly died of a cerebral hemorrhage. This incident has a tremendous impact on her and her two brothers. They all have a strong sense of mortality. She said, “There’s a theory, and a great book about how kids whose parents die can be very high-functioning people, because the worst thing happened to them, and they got over it.” So not only Kara but also her two brothers have this incredible drive to constantly move forward in life because they know how impermanent life can be. Kara Swisher suffered from a stroke in 2012, and luckily it didn’t do too much damage to her physically. After she recovered from it, everyone around her thought she would slow down and focus less on her work and more on herself and family. But she was like, “are you kidding me?! I could literally die any minute now, so I need to keep going!” People told her that when she died, she wouldn’t miss time spent at work, but she retorted that she would because she genuinely loved her work.
Kara Swisher answers that she just works harder and is more persistent. Moreover, most people are handicapped by laziness and lack of observation. One common problem shared by many reporters is that they don’t take the time to analyze the information they get from interviews. They just quickly react, type, and publish.
When asked why she became interested in tech news and the Internet, Kara Swishers answers that when she was little, she wanted to be in the military, like her dad, but because she is gay, she knew that she could not survive as gay in the military at that time. Then when she was an undergraduate, she wanted to be spy, but once again the environment in the intelligence field was hostile towards gay. However, her interest in espionage and propaganda and the effectiveness of propaganda did not ebb, which is probably why she’s attracted to the Internet because it’s also a form of propaganda. And like a spy, a reporter also needs to cultivate her sources, so she can get as much information about the person she’s about to interview. Therefore, at the time of the interview, se has already known so much about the interviewee that she knows when he/she is telling the truth or a lie.
She doesn’t want things from people. She doesn’t need their love, I doesn’t need their money, she doesn’t want their acceptance or anything like that. She cares little about what people think of her, definitely not a people pleaser. Swisher says this has to do with her sexuality. Because she knows she’s gay when she was only four, she was actually super happy with the way she was born. After that, she discovered at every point in her life where she said what pleased her, she always got more successful.
