The Layers of Learning Podcast with Karen and Michelle is here to help you get your whole family learning together in your homeschool. We are the sisters behind Layers of Learning. We love getting together to chat about homeschooling and this podcast is just a series of our chats. We’re inviting you to listen in on our conversations.

We both have big families, but we teach almost all of our school subjects to everyone at once. We want to help you find the joy in that too, so we talk a lot about family homeschooling. To see all of our episodes, visit our Layers of Learning Podcast Page. Join us as we explore how to have a happy, hands-on, family-style homeschool.

How To Teach Geography

Michelle and Karen discuss how to teach geography. It tends to be overlooked in the educational realm, but it shouldn’t be! Geography is fascinating, important, and worthwhile.

Geography is a look at the lands and inhabitants of our planet. Understanding the earth’s lands, plants, animals, people, and cultures will give you more appreciation for the diversity that exists on the earth. In this episode, you will get a glimpse of how the authors of Layers of Learning approach geography lessons with their own kids. Finally, you might also enjoy these sample geography lessons if you’re wondering how to teach geography.

Here Are A Few Topics You’ll Hear About In This Podcast:

  • Why geography deserves to be treated as its own subject, just as important as history and science and art.
  • What geography your kids should know by the time they graduate to be culturally literate.
  • How repetition aids in helping your kids develop a mastery of the globe and understanding where things are on the planet.
  • How to use simple games and flashcards for a constant review.
  • The role of hands-on projects as you study geography. Recipes, crafts, flags, cultural stories, dances, holidays, and traditions can all be a fun part of your homeschool geography studies.
  • Make the celebrations, dances, and music from all over the world part of your own family’s experiences.
  • Come to know the traditional stories from other countries to begin to understand their values.
  • Take opportunities to travel and see other places. Meet people who are from other places.
  • Compare your life, values, and experiences to those of people in other places.
  • How you can tie in all of the other subjects to geography.
  • What family-school looks like as you study geography.
