A monument to murder stands high above the village of Elsdon, in the remote moorlands of Northumberland. This stands as a reminder of a vicious murder which occurred in 1791, when a defenceless old lady was killed by three criminals who wanted to steal her wares to make some easy money. They were caught, and executed, and one of them had his body hung in a gibbet cage as a warning to others. It’s believed that his ghost wanders the area where his body was picked clean by the wildlife, before his bones were unceremoniously thrown away.
