After a long day of work there's nothing I like more than to sit down on my couch and unwind. It's safe, it's predictable and I get to recharge the batteries for a little while. But let me ask you a question, and be honest with yourself: have you ever had that feeling in church? Now I'm guilty of this too: you get to church, sit down and decide, you know what? I'm going to just sit here and tune the preacher out for an hour and relax. Church was never meant to be a passive experience. You should be engaged and you should be feeling something. If not joy, then conviction. Checking out and letting your mind wander throughout service is exactly what the devil wants you to do. The book of Zephaniah Ch. 1 says that God will “utterly consume all things from the land, both man and beast. (However, if you skip over to Matthew 10:28, we’re reassured not to fear someone who only has the ability to kill the body, but to fear him which is able to kill both body & soul.) Now when the King learned that Shadrach Meshach and Abednego wouldn’t bow down, he gave these boys an ultimatum: kneel and worship or else he would throw them into the fiery furnace. He wanted them to know that HE was the only one that could save them from their fate. But they respectfully declined saying that God would deliver them out. And in verse 18 they add "But if not, be it known here, O King that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.” So they knew it could be a death sentence but they stuck with their faith in the Lord to deliver them. The 3 boys went into the fire and when the king’s men looked in, 4 MEN were walking around, unfazed by the flames.
