- James Gilliard was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a gradual, degenerative disease that eats away at the retina, in 1997 and has been legally blind since 2011. In 2014, he decided his sport of choice was going to be triathlons. In the decade since making that decision, James now has over 80 races under his belt.
