(A Recovery of Joy) WEEK #9 - 84th day of the Year - Palm Sunday
New Year's Theme - “REJOICE” - The joy of the Christian experience is the key theme running through this epistle. The words "joy" and "rejoice" are used 16 times in the epistle. Paul wrote Philippians at a time when he was suffering in prison (under house arrest), when he was weary and wondered if he might soon lose his life for Christ. And he wrote to people he loved. So his words to the Christians in Philippi were heavy but caring; sad but consoling; appreciative but bittersweet.
This Epistle of Philippians teaches that HUMILITY mixed with HOPE overcomes HARDSHIP and results in JOY (See Psalms 118:24 & Nehemiah 8:10)
Series Theme Verses:
*John 15:11 (KJV) These things have I spoken unto you, that my"joy"might remain in you, and that your "joy" might be full.
*Philippians 4:4 (KJV)“REJOICE” in the Lord alway: and again I say,“REJOICE”.
From these verses we see that our source of “REJOICING” comes from the Word of God on the inside of the Believer! Today being Palm Sunday means we as Blood bought believers have so much to rejoice about, think on that as we continue in this series! With that being said, let’s go to chapter 3:1-8 of Paul’s letter to the Philippians! In this section of this Epistle we will see:
#1 DUPLICATION
*READ Philippians 3:1 (KJV) Finally, my brethren, “REJOICE” in the Lord. To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not grievous, but for you it is safe.
Note “To write the same things to you” - Here by inspiration of the Holy Spirit the Apostle Paul is duplicating - repeating some truths they need to keep in mind! They need to know there will be “JOY” stealers at work all around you. Here on “Palm Sunday” let’s remind ourselves why we can “REJOICE” in the Lord! Turn to the prophet Zechariah (God Remembers) and see God’s Words through him 500 years before hand:
*Zechariah 9:9 (KJV) “REJOICE” greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is “JUST”, and having “SALVATION”; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.
Note V.9 “REJOICE” greatly” - Why? Well for us in the Lord’s church now we know just as Jesus came in the first advent, He is coming in the second advent:
“ behold, thy King cometh unto thee” - are you a part of Zion - the church? As a daughter - child of Jerusalem your life is founded on peace! Notice Jesus came to bring to us who believe:
“JUST” = to make right - to justify!
“SALVATION” = to be wide, open and free, by implication to be safe!
This prophecy was fulfilled when Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey, as recorded in all four Gospels (Matthew 21:1-11, Mark 11:1-11, Luke 19:28-44, John 12:12-19). The Lord Jesus didn’t come like they thought He would come, and it is no different today! Jesus came the first time lowly riding on a donkey but He is coming on a white sted in power and glory the second time!
#2 DECEITFUL DOCTRINE
*READ Philippians 3:2-7 (KJV) Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision. 3 For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh. 4 Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more: 5 Circumcis
