Chat GPT does not qualify for the characterisation "artificial intelligence" because the word intelligence denotes a human power and the danger is that using such terminology will result in equating these forms of intelligence with each other. Chat is not aware of itself in the way in which a living human being is. The programmers could, if they chose to, programme in, not the awareness, but the seeming awareness on the basis of particular questions Chat is asked, but these are two different things. Weizenbaums book is dicussed, and a picure of the form of life of the first programmers emerges which is illuminating.
