On this day 20 years ago, a string of terrorist attacks numbed America into a state of shock and disbelief. A band of Al Qaeda terrorists hijacked four planes, of which two were rammed into the twin World Trade Center towers in New York. The United States went after Al Qaeda, waging a war in Afghanistan. Two decades and several goof-ups later, it withdrew its troops, ironically ceding space to the Taliban that it had ousted from power in Afghanistan in 2001.
