Prophecies of Jesus’ Birth and Mission

Jesus Christ is present in the Old Testament in at least three ways: preincarnate appearances (the angel of the Lord), prophecies (there are about 350), and types and shadows.

We looked at four areas of prophecy:

1. The Messiah will be born of a virgin (Isaiah 7). We might not recognize a statement in the Old Testament as a prophecy except that the NT identifies the OT statement.
2. The Messiah will provide redemption (Isaiah 53). The Messiah bore to the cross everything ruined by the fall and everything we have personally done.
3. The Messiah will minister to the poor and needy (justice and righteousness). One of Christ’s missions was to minister to the hurting. The church should be the place where people can be transparent about their spiritual, physical, and emotional needs.
4. The Messiah will come for both Jews and Gentiles. Both Paul and Jesus came into conflict with the Jewish religious leaders whenever they offered the Good News to Gentiles. This is a major theme in the NT that should teach us that the Gospel is intended for all cultures and people groups.
