An informal and candid podcast discussing real world horsemanship with respected and experienced experts. Daniel is a guy who is good with horses. He has a background in cutting where he was predominantly involved in developing aged event horses and started over 1000 head of colts, many of whom went on to win lots of cash. A very bad horse wreck at a horse show, involving his niece, prompted him to begin working with people and showing them a no BS version of how to not get killed by their horses. He's since worked with thousands more horses and people from varying disciplines and breeds including many last chance problem horses. In addition to his general horsemanship knowledge he is an internationally known expert on bits and how and why they function. He has a well rounded knowledge base of horsemanship and is working hard at his communication skills with his own species. His wife is a firm believer that he really likes the sound of his own voice and that is the real reason he's started this podcast.http://dauphinhorsemanship.com/

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info. Here's our next quarterly Q&A episode with Nicole Schoup. Nicole is a board member of the Best Horse Practices Summit. She also teaches horsemanship classes for THE Ohio State University. We talk in this one about things to look for when buying/leasing your first horse. We get into building confidence in new riders. I give a few tips and strategies on anxious riders or those who are too much in their head when riding. As we are both board members of the Best Horse Practices Summit, and I am also a presenter at the Summit coming up in April, we also discuss that event and how special it is and what attendees can look forward to. Lastly, we talk about what Nicole is up to in her part of the world and what her horsemanship classe look like. If you are interested in getting on the email list for The Bit Course, I'd suggest you follow this link and start with our free video on the foamy mouth. This will automatically get you on the email list. We begin the next MasterClass in ONE WEEK! https://thebitcourse.com/foamy-mouth You can find Nicole Schoup at the following links: https://www.facebook.com/p/Nicole-Shoup-Horsemanship-100091774544130/ https://www.instagram.com/nicoleshoup/ https://www.youtube.com/@NicoleShoupHorsemanship…

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info. We had Kerri on the podcast last year and it was one of those conversations that could have gone on for a long time. So, we had her back! I was also privileged to be a recent guest on her podcast, Compass Conversations. That's a podcast with 6 guests that doesn't begin with a topic until we've all been talking for a little while and it develops organically. That was episode 21 if you care to listen. It was on competition without combat. If you're into animal communication, intuition, consciousness, and emotional connection with animals, this one's for you. That's Kerri's wheelhouse. I only learned recently that she was/is an animal communicator and I pick her brain on that topic in this episode from start to finish. If you've listened to me at all, you know I'm fairly skeptical about that side of things, being more analytical and literal about things. This is also a conversation between two adults that don't agree completely on everything, but can have a civil conversation about their disagreements, find common ground, and remain friends. I think that lesson is a good one to diplay these days. Anyway you shake it, this was a cool conversation that I really enjoyed. You can find Kerri at the following links: https://www.generateharmony.com/ https://www.instagram.com/generationofharmony https://www.facebook.com/generationofharmony We mentioned Leslie Desmond's truck fire and losses. If you'd like to donate to Leslie, you can find her gofundme here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/please-help-leslie-desmond-recover-from-a-truck-fire If you might be interested in my bit course, you can sign up for one of the free webinars here: https://www.thebitcourse.com/bit-or-bust You can sign up for our newsletter and get the free foamy mouth video here: https://thebitcourse.com/foamy-mouth…

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info. Lynn Acton has been certified by CHA (Advanced English / Intermediate Western) since 1994. In addition to conventional lessons, she founded and taught for several years in a therapeutic horsemanship program for at-risk youth that got national recognition. Her diverse interests led her to lessons in jumping, classical dressage, western, Centered Riding, ground work, natural horsemanship, dressage musical freestyle, obstacle training, and clicker training. She's learned from three of Sally Swift’s Centered Riding apprentices who expanded on her work: Wendy Murdoch, Susan Harris, and Mitzi Summers. Lynn's current focus is horse behavior, emotions, and learning. Applying her academic background in sociology and systems science, and teaching experience, she translates current research into practical application. Herwork is unique in that she integrates insights from diverse sources, showing how they complement each other, and can guide all of us in improving horse welfare, and the quality and effectiveness of our interactions with horses. Lynn and I discuss many topics in this podcast. We get into dominance theory, her brand of protector leadership, her experiences that have informed her theories, and much more. I have read and recommend Lynn's book, "What Horses Really Want". It offers her perspectives on how things should go, with many examples and quite helpful pictures that illustrate her points. You can find Lynn at the following links: https://www.lynnacton.com/ https://www.facebook.com/lynn.acton.94 https://www.lynnacton.com/Book https://www.youtube.com/@jerryacton5825/videos…

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info. This one's long, but very good and has lots of stuff people need to hear. Jillian Kreinbring is a Functional Anatomy expert and charming to boot. She's been studying this stuff her entire adult life, has a M.S. in it, and has been running the roads teaching it for over 20 years. Her goal is to teach you how to keep your horse working for longevity and vitality. She began flipping ponies for the local sale barn as a youngster. She spent time in Germany riding western of all things and for the latter half of her career has been a student of Manolo Mendez and has been influenced by other teachers like Peggy Cummings, Stephanie Millham, Mark Russel, and Betina Drummond. While her western roots are still in tact, she's a Classical Dressage rider these days. She's a big proponent of in-hand work and using the various types of cavesons for maximum communication. This talk gets pretty deep into the structures and movement consequences of those structures. We talk about what lateral flexion really is, skeletal maturation, collection, different postures for different goals and much more. Jillian also has a Books and Bourbon Club along with her friend, Suzanne. They assign 7 books throughout the year and have live online webinars, sometimes with the authors or influential figures. They also spotlight an adult beverage each time. I'll be joining them this year and I'm sure you could do worse with your time. You can find Jillian at the following links: https://online.jilliankreinbringinspired.com/ https://www.facebook.com/JKInspired https://www.instagram.com/jkinspiredllc/ https://www.youtube.com/@jilliankreinbringinspired5580 Books and Bourbon Club https://booksandbourbonequestrianclub.net/ The Bone Room https://www.equus-soma.com/…

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info. Mark Rashid is an internationally known clinician, author, screenwriter, musician, luthier, and Aikido master. He's also developed his own blend of Aikido and horsemanship called Aibado. Mark is a go with the flow kind of guy. He doesn't get his feathers ruffled too easily and is a wealth of great insight. Mark's known for his ability to understand the horse’s point of view and solve difficult problems with communication rather than force. His books are treasured in many collections and include titles like: "Considering the Horse", "Horses Never Lie", "Life Lessons from a Ranch Horse", "Whole Heart, Whole Horse", and his latest book, "For the Love of the Horse". Mark also wrote the novel, "Out of the Wild", which was turned into a movie. If you're interested in riding softly, with intention, and being in harmony, Mark is your guy. Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info. If you've listened to the podcast very much, it'll come as no surprise to you that Jim Masterson is one of my favorite people in this business. Since we have such a good relationship, he asked if he could flip the script and interview me and even do the sponsor for the episode. He did not disapoint. This business is ultimately about people having fun and that we definitely do. I hope you enjoy learning a little more about me and the future plans as well. https://dauphinhorsemanship.com/ https://thebitcourse.com/ https://www.youtube.com/@DanielDauphin https://www.instagram.com/dauphin_horsemanship/ https://www.facebook.com/ddauphin77/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/795178083941287 https://mastersonmethod.com/ https://www.facebook.com/MastersonMethod https://www.youtube.com/@mastersonmethod https://www.instagram.com/mastersonmethod/ https://www.instagram.com/mastersonmethod.canine/…

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info. Josh is a friend and has been on the podcast before. He's from Alberta, and like all Canadians that I've met, is a very nice and good natured guy. He's got a heart to help people and a very thoughtful perspective. He understands that this is a lifelong journey, as evidenced by his tag line, A Horseman's Pursuit. Josh is about your relationship with everything. One aspect of his take that I really appreciate is that he looks at things not just from the horse's perspective. He understands and gives space for you to do what you need to do, in the moment, even if it has nothing to do with training the horse. In this episode we talk a lot about the industry, trends, classics, and things we feel are somewhat misguided and need to shift back to center. I also discover he's a team roper. It's a roller coaster. In addition to Josh's website courses and offerings, he's now also got some exculsive content through NF+. You can find Josh's stuff at the following links: https://joshnichol.com/ https://www.youtube.com/c/JoshNicholAHorsemansPursuit https://www.instagram.com/joshnicholahorsemanspursuit/ https://www.facebook.com/AHorsemansPursuit https://noellefloyd.com/pages/josh-nichol?srsltid=AfmBOop05CClnB_XNF-BbSWBl2G-CXdC1Bnt4MpVQM2PlRC-E0qcVjjo…

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info. This episode is turned over to you. Last week I made the offer of doing a live Q & A over zoom. It went quite well and they kept me busy answering their questions for a couple of hours. We'll be doing more of these types of Live Q & As, so make sure you're on our email newsletter list. We cover topics in this from bitting questions to laying a horse down. We'll plan more of these, so, if you'd like your chance to ask away, make sure you're on our email newsletter lists. Go to either of the websites listed below and just wait a few seconds. There will be a popup that will prompt you to enter your information to join that list. You'll get all of my news and events information first, challenges where you can win prizes, as well as exclusive articles and offers. You can also join my private facebook group for more interaction. https://dauphinhorsemanship.com/ https://thebitcourse.com/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/795178083941287 https://www.facebook.com/ddauphin77/ https://www.youtube.com/@DanielDauphin https://www.instagram.com/dauphin_horsemanship/…

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info. Kerry Thomas never meant to be in the horse business. He started out observing animals in a biological research way and had the chance opportuntity to observe mustangs and predators. He's also colorblind and that changes the way he literally sees horses, which lead to him seeing them differently, figuratively. I really appreciate his take on herd dynamics. We talked about how a colt is weaned will affect their personality and presence. I even threw a few things at him on the fly during this episode that I really wasn't sure how his take would match my own. All of this time observing wild horses lead to him doing personality profiles and sensory evaluations in the racing world through his business, Sensory Soundness. He's traveled the world and worked for some of the biggest owners, kings, and trainers in the racing world. He was even involved in the purchase evaluation of Runhappy, 2015 American Champion Sprint Horse. He's spent years doing evaluations for the Kentucky Derby too. Kerry has a fairly unique take on horse personalities. His name first came my way when I interviewed Dr. Shelley Appleton and I really enjoyed my talk with Kerry. Due to his schedule on the day or our recording, we had to cut things short, so you can certainly look for him to come back on again in the future. Kerry and his wife, Daphne, have a new podcast called Beyond the Hoof. You can find Kerry at the following links: https://www.kerrymthomas.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/kerrymthomas/ https://www.tiktok.com/@sensory.soundness https://x.com/viewfromthehoof?s=20 https://www.instagram.com/sensorysoundness/ https://www.facebook.com/SensorySoundness https://www.youtube.com/@Sensory943 Thier Podcast, "Beyond the Hoof": https://creators.spotify.com/pod/show/125418362…

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info. Gretchen Deane is an accomplished rider. She's an accomplished bodyworker with experience and training in both The Masterson Method, and Reiki healing. She's also a trained and practicing neuromuscular equine dentist and an overall cool lady. This is a must listen episode in my opinion. Equine dentistry is probably the low hanging fruit of horse care at the moment. We've even got a whole new disorder, EOTRH, that has come about mainly because of excessive floating with power tools. In this episode we discuss the bodywork side of Gretchen's training, but we get pretty deep into the hyoid apparatus, the TMJ, how to know when you horse is due for dental care, how to evaluate a dental provider, and just how much proper or improper dental care can affect your horse. Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info. I do like the format of doing Q&As, but it does seem awkward at times to just be droning on by myself for an hour. So, Nicole has agreed to help me do these occasionally. Please let me know how you like these. Nicole is a trainer in her own right. She also teaches Horsemanship Classes at The Ohio State University, and is a Board Member of the Best Horse Practices Summit. In this episode we talk about: Desensitization, spooking, threshold, timing, building rapport What to do if you are riding a horse that sees something scary and goes frozen on you Using other horses to help a green horse build confidence Being important to your horse and fully having their attention Tom Thumb bits, unbalanced horses with over developed muscle groups Backing up to a snaffle if needed A phenomenal exercise to help get a resistant horse to soften mentally Proud cut horses and stallion management You can find Nicole at these links: https://www.facebook.com/p/Nicole-Shoup-Horsemanship-100091774544130/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTJ7qxudfdhvqYcNiyJR2yA https://www.patreon.com/NicoleShoupHorsemanship https://www.instagram.com/nicoleshoup/ To get to the new self-guided version of "The Bit Course" or to get on my newsletter: https://thebitcourse.com/self-guided-home https://dauphinhorsemanship.com/…

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info. I met Sara this past February at Buck the Trend . This was a mental health conference put on by Maddy Butcher and Best Horse Practices for the ranching, horse, and agriculture industry professionals. As Sara talks about in this episode, that conference had a profound effect on her. Sara has owned a horse magazine, puts on clinics, is a Detective for a Wyoming Sheriff, and does training for the mounted patrols of Wyoming. She's also a character and someone you'd enjoy spending some time with. Sara lives a life in service to others, and she bravely talks about some of those stuggles. During Buck the Trend, we talked about suicide. Sara's one of the ones who finds you after. That takes a toll on a person. It's going to take people like her to talk about these things and remove the stigmas, so that those who do need the help won't be too ashamed to seek and receive it. Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info. I've known Amy Lang for over a decade and she's a treasure within our industry. She's been a collegiate equestrian, trainer, has a masters in Equine Management, ran a massive lessons program at a huge public stable, has been a vet tech, and is now running her own marketing firm aimed at helping equine business owners with the tasks of social media and marketing. Amy is very soft spoken, and one of those people that you'd likely underestimate, but there's iron in her core. On my first interaction with her we were working with a problem mare that had a significant problem kicking out at other horses. I wasn't sure if the reserved young lady before me was going to be able to ride everything that I knew was coming. I was wrong. She's a badass. Amy's managed a farm with and shown Saddlebreds, she's jumped the jumps, she's done about everything you can do in an English saddle with class and poise. She's also got a lot of thoughts on the business side of this world and I think her perspective is helpful and genuine. You can find Amy at the following links: https://arlcreative.com/ https://www.etsy.com/shop/arlcreative/?etsrc=sdt If you're interested in "The Bit Course 2.0: Understanding How and Why Bits Function" Self-Guided Course, you can find it here: https://thebitcourse.com/self-guided-home…

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info. Dave Duquette is a Marine, Horse Trainer, and Emmy Winner. He has also been fighting for the agricultural industry and particularly the horse business for a long time. He used to work at Protect the Harvest and started Western Justice several years ago. Western Justice has the mission to fight animal extremist groups and the influence they are having on our industry. If there's been a legal battle going on where some rancher has been unfairly railroaded by the government's mindless beaurocracy, or some animal rights group is trying to end rodeo forever, it's very likely Dave was in there fighting for us. The point of Western Justice is to have an organization with a membership that fights to preserve our western heritage. Those of us in agriculture and the horse world are astoundingly under represented and the organizations that have supposed to have been fighting for us are largely ineffective or simply bowing down without fighting at all. Western Justice's team is committed to forming a united front of western organizations and individuals and to advocate on their behalf at the legislative level. Colton Woods, along with his wife Maredith, have Colton Woods Horsemanship, The Professional Horseman's School, Professional Mentorship Program, and the online webdevelopment platform Horse Business Manager that helps other professional horsemen and women with the scheduling, billing, social media, and communication with their customers. Colton's also a Christian, husband and father, with the courage and willingness to fight the absurdities that we're asked to tolerate these days. In part 2 of our chat, we get into horse slaughter, animal rights vs animal welfare, branding mustangs, self-policing problems in the industry, attempts at banning rodeo in California and New York, and the fact that USDA Inspections and registrations will soon be required for all horse events as of Feb. '25 if something doesn't get done and how that's a lot more dangerous than it seems at face value.
