What happens when photography becomes a tool for social change rather than just documentation? In this episode, Michael Dooney speaks with acclaimed British photographer and artist Mark Neville about his journey from art school to the front-lines of conflict, and how he uses collaborative photography projects to empower communities, challenge social norms, and effect real-world impact. Neville shares stories from his time as an official war artist in Afghanistan, discusses the making of influential projects like The Port Glasgow Book Project and Stop Tanks With Books , and reflects on his ongoing work in Ukraine. Listeners will gain insights into the ethics of documentary practice, the power of art as activism, and what it means to make photography for—and with—the people it represents. This week's EYE ON NPI is going to keep an eye on the hot summer temperatures - it's Melexis' MLX90632 Miniature Far Infrared (FIR) Sensors (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/m/melexis/mlx90632-miniature-far-infared-fir-sensors) a series of low cost, high performance, ultra tiny IR temperature sensors with medical grade accuracy! The MLX90632 comes from Melexis (https://www.digikey.com/short/zvzvp01b) whose expertise is IR temperature sensors. We've been using their sensors like the MLX90614 (https://www.digikey.com/short/b990pn8w) for over a decade! These sensors are specifically good for sensing the temperature of something that they are not touching. There's lots of reasons to use this, for example when something is really hot, so you don't want your circuit to reach the same temperature which would degrade or damage it. Or for sanitation: unlike in-ear or oral temperature sensing, you can point this at someone's head or mouth to measure their temperature without ickyness. Or maybe you're measuring something that is far away or hard to attach a thermocouple to, for example to measure the temperature of a leaf for calculating the Vapor Pressure Deficit (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vapour-pressure_deficit). For 'single point' measurement, we've used the MLX90614 (https://www.digikey.com/short/b990pn8w), they've also got the MLX90640 (https://www.digikey.com/short/8pf5zrq8) which is more like a camera, with 32x24 pixel IR camera support. Both are way cheaper than a full FLIR camera module, and we love the I2C interface which makes it easy to interface with any microcontroller or microcomputer. However, what we really wanted is something more affordable and hopefully even surface-mount-friendly. After a bit of searching this week we bumped into the MLX90632 (https://www.digikey.com/short/zvzvp01b) which has everything we've wanted! First up, unlike the other IR sensors we've used, the MLX90632 (https://www.digikey.com/short/zvzvp01b) is compact and surface mountable - that makes assembly fast and easy without hand soldering and lead-clipping. Second, it's got an I2C interface so we don't have to do any analog noodling to convert a current to temperature. It's also pre-calibrated so you can use it right 'out of the box' like classic non-IR temperature sensors. There's versions for both 3.3V or 1.8V power/logic, so you can pop it into your circuit with ease. And if you're using for human/animal temperature monitoring, the medical-grade version is factory calibrated with an accuracy of ±0.2˚C within the narrow object temperature range from 35 to 42˚C. Note that both 'standard' and 'medical' grade have different accuracy zones, and as you get to the extremes from 25C, the accuracy in C will rise to +-4C: its a trade-off between range and accuracy. Just note that you need to tell the sensor which mode you want to be in, over I2C Speaking of - this sensor is I2C compatible! So it's easy to interface this using C, Arduino, Python, etc. Check out the register map in the datasheet - you will need to read the pre-programmed calibration constants in order to convert readings to ambient/remote temperatures. There's also built in EEPROM that you can program with offsets or to change the I2C peripheral address, handy if you have device-specific settings that you want to tie to the individual sensor for custom calibration. To make it easier to get going, check out the Melexis C library on github (https://github.com/melexis/mlx90632-library) If you think the MLX90632 (https://www.digikey.com/short/zvzvp01b) is hot-to-trot, then you are in luck because there's tons in stock at DigiKey right now, available for immediate shipment! Order today and you'll get this tiny IR sensor for your own by tomorrow afternoon so you can start getting precision remote temperature sensing added to your design in a jiffy.…

(Re-broadcast, LIVE was not working for all social media on Sunday night, so here ya go! This week at our desk, we spent a lot of our focused engineering time working on e-paper display drivers. These displays are a lot more annoying than TFTs, which have settled on standardized MIPI command sets. Also, they have custom "waveforms" used to configure the refresh technique. By default, we use the built-in waveforms from OTP memory, but it's possible to load new waveforms, letting us do funky stuff like coax 4-grayscale out of a "monochrome" display. We also designed a simple moisture sensor PCB for an ultra-low-cost kit to be used by students—sometimes it's okay to under-design for cost reasons!…

For our E-Ink display breakout boards, we add an SRAM chip onboard to help buffer the display. Unlike TFTs that have built-in video RAM, EPDs require writing the full memory at once—which can get into multi-KBs. For many modern chips, up to 64KB of video RAM isn't a big deal, but for small, low-cost micros like Arduino, that's a lot! Since EPDs are slow anyway, we can use an external SRAM chip for fast write/read—an ideal solution. This week's EYE ON NPI is locked in and latched on - it's CIT Relay and Switch's L115F2 Series Latching 50 A Relays, (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/c/cit/l115f2-series-latching-50-a-relays) a great way to control high voltage and currents, at a great price, and with the benefit of a latching control system so you don't need nearly as much current when activating as standard relays. We've covered relays a few times on EYE ON NPI (https://blog.adafruit.com/2023/08/03/eye-on-npi-sensata-crydoms-series-1-ac-panel-mount-solid-state-relays-eyeonnpi-digikey-sensata-digikey-adafruit/) there's thousands of different types stocked at DigiKey, for every kind of configuration and power usage. We've even seen solid state relays (https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/01/07/eye-on-npi-te-ssrmp-series-solid-state-relays-eyeonnpi-digikey-teconnectivity-digikey/) that don't have a mechanical component. But, if you're designing something that isn't meant to switch more than 10,000 times in its lifetime, you can keep your costs low by sticking to the tried and true mechanical relay. The only thing you might like is the upgrade of a Latching-type relay such as the L115F2 series (https://www.digikey.com/short/372fdpvv). Most relays (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/power-relays-over-2-amps/188?s=N4IgjCBcoLQdIDGUBmBDANgZwKYBoQB7KAbRACYAWSgThAF0BfRg80kAJxwzQE8HGQA) are simple on-off types, when you put current through the electromagnet, it attracts the relay contacts to switch from the Normally-Closed side to Normally-Open making the circuit. The moment the current is removed, the electromagnet turns off, and the relay switches back off. That means, you have to keep that current going for as long as you want the circuit to close. For some relays, that can be quite a bit of power: it's not unusual to need up to 200mA at 5V. If you're running on battery power, or if you want to keep your power supply budget from getting sucked up, you can swap to a latching relay. These have a 'bi-directional' electromagnet, and a plastic latching system so when you put current through one way, it will turn on and stay on. To turn off the relay, swap the polarity of the electromagnet so current goes the other way: that will unlatch the relay and turn it off. The mechanical construction is a little more expensive than a standard relay, and you'll need an H-bridge (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H-bridge) to control the electromagnet, but you only need current for that short pulse. The CIT Relay and Switch's L115F2 Series (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/c/cit/l115f2-series-latching-50-a-relays) are available in a range of configurations: with coil rated voltages of 5/12/24/48V, so you can use with whatever your native power system is. In both SPST and SPDT contacts, and either 30A, 40A or 50A rated current. There's also two size versions, the slim one still has the spade contacts on the top but they stick out rather than being sunken in the relay body.. If you want a powerful, low cost, low power solution to switching some high voltage/currents around your next product - check out the CIT Relay and Switch's L115F2 Series Latching 50 A Relays (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/c/cit/l115f2-series-latching-50-a-relays) available at DigiKey! This week's EYE ON NPI is a powerful pocket-sized 'puter - it's the new PocketBeagle 2 from beagleboard.org! (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/b/beagleboard/pocketbeagle-2) This is a nice update from the beagleboard team to replace the deprecated PocketBeagle (https://www.digikey.com/short/bcmnqt01) - this new version gives you a lot more processor power at a much lower price. It's perfect when you want a full-featured single-board computer with a ton of GPIO and analog inputs, in a very smol package for easy integration. The PocketBeagle 2 is built around a TI Sitara AM6232 (https://www.digikey.com/short/83md98qd) dual-core Cortex-A53 plus dual Cortex-M4 subprocessor, with 512MB of external DDR4 SRAM. There's 4 MB of onboard eMMC flash, plus a socket for external microSD cards. There's also essentials like USB C for the native device, and a picoprobe-compatible (https://www.digikey.com/short/fq4wmp2b) UART port. What's great about the PocketBeagle 2 (https://www.digikey.com/short/17jh4q7b) is that compared to many single-board computers, the design is fully open source (https://github.com/beagleboard/pocketbeagle-2) verified-and-tested, so if you want to design your own board to add or remove peripherals/components, you can just pick up an AM6232 (https://www.digikey.com/short/83md98qd) from DigiKey and route your own design. Of course, with the high density BGA chip design, it's for experts: many makers and small-scale designers will be better off just adding the 2x18 Cape Headers (https://docs.beagle.cc/boards/pocketbeagle-2/04-expansion.html) which give you a ton of power and GPIO. For example, if you want to connect an external USB device to the host peripheral, those pins plus power and ground are on P1. If you want to connect a TTL graphical display (https://www.digikey.com/short/z9mfvzr8), the HSYNC/VSYNC/DE/Data pins are all on the P1/P2 - they're called VOUT. There's also multiple I2C and SPI ports and analog inputs. The PocketBeagle 2 (https://www.digikey.com/short/17jh4q7b) is back compatible with older peripherals you can pick up to get started designing 'Capes' (the name used for plug-in peripherals). Since the boards use 0.1" socket headers, its easy to prototype with jumper wires or DIY a design with simple CAD software and hand soldering. You can check out the GamePup (https://www.digikey.com/short/n2pp834m)which shows how to connect USB host, external battery, TFT display and lots of buttons. Or the TechLab (https://www.digikey.com/short/852dqn2c) which has 7-segment display, buzzer, USB serial and host, PWM'able RGB LED and I2C accelerometer. (https://www.beagleboard.org/boards/techlab) There's open source design files that you can use to kickstart your own Pocket Cape design (https://github.com/beagleboard/capes/tree/master/pocketbeagle/TechLab) Best of all, the PocketBeagle 2 (https://www.digikey.com/short/17jh4q7b) from beagleboard.org is almost half the price of the original PocketBeagle...and DigiKey has them in stock right now for instant shipment! Book today and you'll have a tiny and powerful single board Linux computer in your pocket by tomorrow afternoon. And don't forget... next week, June 19 2025, there's a webinar you can join to learn more (https://event.on24.com/wcc/r/4906084/A19039CF9E3C1ED0F430C14932B23630?partnerref=nph) about how to use the PocketBeagle 2 - it's free and run by the folks who designed the board, so register to get a reminder and watch!…

You can build a 3D printed IoT alarm clock using CircuitPython and electronics from Adafruit. Guide: https://learn.adafruit.com/led-matrix-alarm-clock This LED matrix alarm clock is inspired by the cute plush toy monsters LaBuBu by Pop Mart. It gets time from the internet and features sound effects, brightness dimming for night time and cute animations like winking eyes. The clock is powered by an Adafruit QT Py ESP32-S3 with an amplifier for high quality audio output. Set your timezone, alarm time, volume, and the LED brightness settings for day and night. The alarm sounds are audio .mp3 files that are randomized each time they’re triggered. Scrolling text is displayed when an alarm goes off, and a winking eyes animation plays -- giving the clock some character. A rotary encoder is used to set the alarms. You just press on the encoder and turn the knob to set hours and minutes. Text will display to show if the alarm is On or Off. This week's EYE ON NPI is a super connector - it's the Texas Instruments SimpleLink Wi-Fi CC33xx Family (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/t/texas-instruments/simplelink-wi-fi-cc33xx-family) with 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi 6 support, plus optional Bluetooth LE, in a low cost co-processor you can add to any microcontroller project you have to instantly IoT-ify it. This family of chips is a big upgrade in the CC3 family, and looks like a very competitive solution to existing market chips - we're excited to see how TI has adapted to the existing market to bring this compelling offering. Oh the TI CC3x series, how you've grown! We first met you back when it was the CC3000, a radical WiFi co-processor with the (at-the-time) astonishing price of ~$10 per module. At the time, we crafted an Arduino-compatible shield and a breakout board (https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-cc3000-wifi/overview) as well as an Arduino port of the TCP/IP mini-stack so that folks could do amazing things like get the time (https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-cc3000-wifi/internettime), read a web page (https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-cc3000-wifi/webclient) or even send a Tweet (https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-cc3000-wifi/sendtweet). The big thing was making it so you weren't spending the $50 it cost up-till-then to add a full-linux-system-as-peripheral (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1498). Since then, TI has released some updated versions, such as the CC3100 (https://www.digikey.com/short/9cp431pr), which added 802.11n and lower power draw - we saw it featured in a few micropython projects (https://blog.adafruit.com/2016/08/24/micropython-name-badge-from-emf-2016/) thanks to the core driver support (https://github.com/micropython/micropython/tree/master/drivers/cc3100). And after that, the CC3200 series (https://www.digikey.com/short/9289jcq3), which added TLS/SSL support and had an internal ARM Cortex-M4 that could run code on its own, like MicroPython! (https://github.com/micropython/micropython/blob/master/ports/cc3200/README.md) So it's no surprise that TI is continuing to press their WiFi family forward, to now the CC33xx! The new Texas Instruments SimpleLink Wi-Fi CC33xx Family (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/t/texas-instruments/simplelink-wi-fi-cc33xx-family) comes with 4 variants: the CC330x have 2.4GHz WiFi only, where-as the CC335x add 5GHz for an additional cost. Likewise, the CC33x0 have only WiFi, and the CC33x1 have WiFi+BLE. Since all the chips / modules are pin-compatible, you can develop with one and then change in production to whatever final setup suits your product. Like the earlier chips, these chips are expected to be connected to a main processor: either a microcontroller or microcomputer, over SPI or SDIO. SPI will work great for your smaller micros, SDIO is great when you have the speed and bandwidth to shift a lot more data around. When connecting over BLE, use the UART-with-flow control - that's the standard for a "BTLE Host Controller Interface" communications (https://www.bluetooth.com/wp-content/uploads/Files/Specification/HTML/Core-60/out/en/host-controller-interface/uart-transport-layer.html). Of course, there's no way you'll want to write a driver for this kind of complex chip - so visit the CC33xx software download page (https://www.ti.com/tool/CC33XX-SOFTWARE) which has software in the form of Linux kernel patch/drivers for beefy chips, or an microcontroller with an RTOS - follow their porting guide to get it running on a non-TI chipset (https://dev.ti.com/tirex/explore/node?node=A__AEIJm0rwIeU.2P1OBWwlaA__CC33XX-RTOS-MCU__dzPVh4K__LATEST) Now you're probably saying "OK cool but I don't want to do a bunch of RF layout, I want a nice tinned module i can slap down and connect my RP-SMA or chip antenna" - and not surprisingly, it looks like there's a CC3301 module (https://www.ti.com/product/CC3301MOD) in pre-production with an optimistic budgetary price of $2.88 - that's for 2.4GHz + BLE. For the 5GHz CC3351MOD (https://www.ti.com/product/CC3351MOD) the price is $3.50. Sans BLE the CC3350MOD (https://www.ti.com/product/CC3350MOD) is $3.13. If you want a peek at what the CC3301 module might look like, the BoosterPack product page has a tantalizing glimpse (https://www.ti.com/tool/BP-CC3301MOD). You can sign up at TI's site for updates on the release schedule, or chat with your DigiKey sales rep and they'll let you know when the part makes it into general distribution. Until then, you can get plenty of TI CC3350 (https://www.digikey.com/short/3z7tqtrp) and CC3351 (https://www.digikey.com/short/hmqzwv5j) bare chips: they're both in stock at DigiKey for immediate shipment! Order today and you'll quickly add low-cost WiFi 6 + BLE support to your next design, with 2.4/5 GHz support so you're ready for any customer or configuration. With ready-to-go software, and great low prices, you can get your design set up with cutting-edge networking without breaking the BOM bank.…

This week at the desk, we worked on getting more small hardware boards done. We revised our 1.5" transparent OLED breakout (oops, pins were swapped), designed breakouts for sensors like the AS5600 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/ams-osram-usa-inc/AS5600-ASOM/8250257) and STHS34PF80 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/stmicroelectronics/STHS34PF80/13187390), and updated the NAU7802 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nuvoton-technology-corporation-of-america/NAU7802SGI/4929384) to have both ADC ports available. We’re also working on another stepper motor driver, since the TMC2209 breakout (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6121) was a big hit. We wrapped and sent out the Triple-output Active Shifting RGB Matrix Bonnet (https://blog.adafruit.com/2025/02/28/triple-matrix-bonnet-makes-big-bright-displays/). Then we finally had a little time to get back into bigger projects, like Fruit Jam, which we re-picked-up! This week we focused on implementing the ESP32-C6 Wi-Fi co-processor, which needed a bit of rework, but now we've got rev C prototype PCBs on the way. ----------------------------------------- Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------…

For our Triple-output Active Shifting RGB Matrix Bonnet (https://blog.adafruit.com/2025/02/28/triple-matrix-bonnet-makes-big-bright-displays/) design, we need to shift a lot of signals from 3V to 5V. Let’s look for an 8-channel level shifter that takes 3V in, gives 5V out, and can handle 10 MHz signals.
