Beth Bayley is the Open Science Manager at Karger Publishers, a health sciences publisher based in Switzerland. She co-leads Karger’s Open Science Task Force as well as the Karger Ambassadors Program. Beth discusses how Karger embraced Open Access publishing early, launching its first Open Access journal in 2017. A couple of days ago, Matthieu Boisgontier shared a post on Linkedin, mentioning that he had just published his 100th paper. While this seems to be quite the achievement for many scholars these days, he questioned if that was even something that should be celebrated. Matthieu Boisgontier is an Associate Professor at the University of Ottawa in the Faculty of Health Sciences, a physiotherapist, a kinesiologist, and a certified medical imaging technologist. He completed his Ph.D. in France in 2012 at the Université Grenoble Alpes. His research program combines neuroscience, gerontology, and health to contribute to understanding and solving the pandemic of physical inactivity. In this episode, Jo and Matthieu discuss Matthieu's career transition from physiotherapy to research and teaching, as well as the importance of open access publishing in academic research. They explored the benefits of diamond open access journals, the progress of open science initiatives globally, and the significance of multilingualism in research communication. Welcome to our bonus episode featuring the end-of-year event of the Rwanda Preprint Club currently known as the Review and Curate Club. Dine Roseline Dzekem ( ORCID : 0000-0002-8210-9258 ) created the Review and Curate Club, an open-science and open-access club in Africa, which is operated by an enthusiastic committee. It aims to promote open science by boosting awareness of preprints, scientific processes, prereview, and curation. The Review and Curate Club wrapped up the year 2024 with a webinar titled " Advocating for Preprint Sharing in Rwanda and Africa." The event served as a platform to emphasize the growing importance of preprints in fostering collaboration, accelerating research, and building a stronger Open Science community in Africa. Four guest speakers have been featured with presentations on the key scholarly services for preprint sharing and community-based peer review: Jonny Coates from ASAPbio gave an overview of the African and global preprint landscape; Jo Havemann from Access 2 Perspectives provided an overview of Open Science, Open Access principles, and the opportunity to share preprints via the continental research repository AfricArXiv ; Ogunniyi Tolulope Joseph, from the Review and Curate Club, presented the Needs assessment results “ Promoting Preprint Awareness and Adoption in Africa: A Need-Driven Perspective From the African Region / https://africarxiv.ubuntunet.net/handle/1/1798 ” conducted by the club; and Vanessa Fairhurst from PREreview discussed the services and activities of PREreview, and the value of collaborative peer review. Speaker's Profile: Ina Smith, DOAJ Ambassador Southern Africa ORCID ID: ⁠ 0000-0002-9710-3668 ⁠ Ina Smith is a strong advocate for open science, especially in Africa and South Africa. With over 20 years of experience, she has worked at universities like the University of Pretoria and Stellenbosch University, focusing on repositories and journal publishing. She has a Master’s in Computer Integrated Education and has helped implement important projects like UPSpace and SUNScholar. Since 2014, Ina has been the Planning Manager at the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf). She is a DOAJ Ambassador for Southern Africa and led the review of the DOAJ Ambassador Programme in 2024. She also led the African Open Science landscape study and helped create the African Scientists Directory. Ina’s work in open science has earned her several awards, including the LIASA Librarian of the Year in 2016. Zoë Mullan is the Editor-in-Chief of the open access journal, The Lancet Global Health . She is an Ex-Officio Board Member of the Consortium of Universities for Global Health ; an International Advisory Board member of Sun-Yat Sen Global Health Institute, Guangzhou, China ; and a Scientific Advisory Board member of the Centre for International Health Protection at the Robert Koch Institute, Berlin, Germany . Between 2013 and 2017 she was a Council Member and Trustee of the Committee on Publication Ethics. She trained in Biochemistry at the University of Bath, UK, before joining the publishing industry in 1997 as a Scientific Information Officer with CABI. She moved to The Lancet in 1999, where she has worked since, variously as a technical editor, section editor, and founding editor of The Lancet Global Health. She is a founding member of Afrika Hai , where she uses Creative Art Therapies to co-produce knowledge in local communities and to restore African indigenous healing knowledge ways. Stephanie Gauttier is an Assistant Professor at the Grenoble School of Management (GEM) doing research at the intersection of information systems, human-computer interaction, and ethics. She is the Vice-Chair of the COST Action CA 19117 Researcher Mental Health Observatory and is active in initiatives related to supporting researchers’ mental health. For the Marie Curie Alumni Association, Stephanie co-created a peer-to-peer mental health mentoring network. Stephanie defended her PhD in management information systems in 2017. She has a Master's degree in Political Sciences and a Master's in Communication Sciences, and over five years of experience in the marketing industry. As a result, her research crosses disciplines and was applied to consumers (PhD), learners (EDUWORKS), and more recently to the healthcare domain (Responsible-Industry and GLASNOST). During her Postdoc she focused on Philosophy and Ethics. In 2018, Stephanie was awarded an individual Marie Curie fellowship, was nominated on the list of 400 women in the NL across all industries in the “bright mind” category in 2018, and received the Brenner award for her work in Q-methodology and phenomenology in 2019..
