"It is a scientific fact that these macaques, like all other primates, including humans, are communicating. They communicate in much the same way we do - facial expressions, vocalizations, body postures, those kinds of things." - Jeff Kerr Jeff Kerr is PETA foundations Chief Legal Officer. I asked him to come on the show to talk about one of PETA’s current lawsuits against the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Nathional Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). PETA is arguing that the monkeys being tested on in a government run facility are capable of communication (or “are communicating”). And that we have a constitutional right under the First Amendment to receive their communications. This could be a game changer in allowing us to see what’s really going on in labs that are funded by taxpayer money, and which have so far been censored from public view. PETA’s lawsuit follows years of NIH’s attempts to deny Freedom of Information requests banning PETA executives from its campus and illegally censoring animal advocates’ speech on NIH’s public social media pages. Through the lawsuit, PETA is seeking a live audio-visual feed to see and hear real-time communications from the macaques who have been kept isolated, used in fear experiments, and had posts cemented into their heads. Anthropologists and other scientists have studied macaque and other primate communications for decades and know that the monkeys communicate effectively and intentionally through lip smacking, fear grimaces, body language, and various cries and sounds—all of which constitute speech under the law. Primatologists can analyze that speech on a deeper level to share their stories with the world.…

She co-leads Karger’s Open Science Task Force as well as the Karger Ambassadors Program. Specializing in Open Access since 2010, Beth is engaged with strategy, policy, and communications to support Karger's “open for Open“ drive toward a sustainable transition to Open Access that will serve all stakeholders, from libraries to authors to research funders and the broader public. In this episode, Beth shares her journey into scholarly publishing and her role in promoting Open Science. She started with a background in journalism before joining Karger. Beth discusses how Karger embraced Open Access publishing early, launching its first Open Access journal in 2017. Over time, her role expanded to Open Science, which includes supporting researchers with best practices beyond Open Access, such as open data, FAIR data principles, and open peer review. Dr Friederike Rohde is a sustainability researcher with a background in science and technology studies. 1 Reflections on the usefulness of the 100th published paper - A conversation with Matthieu Boisgontier 25:34
A couple of days ago, Matthieu Boisgontier shared a post on Linkedin, mentioning that he had just published his 100th paper. While this seems to be quite the achievement for many scholars these days, he questioned if that was even something that should be celebrated. Matthieu Boisgontier is an Associate Professor at the University of Ottawa in the Faculty of Health Sciences, a physiotherapist, a kinesiologist, and a certified medical imaging technologist. He completed his Ph.D. in France in 2012 at the Université Grenoble Alpes. His research program combines neuroscience, gerontology, and health to contribute to understanding and solving the pandemic of physical inactivity. In this episode, Jo and Matthieu discuss Matthieu's career transition from physiotherapy to research and teaching, as well as the importance of open access publishing in academic research. They explored the benefits of diamond open access journals, the progress of open science initiatives globally, and the significance of multilingualism in research communication. Podcast summary Career Transition and Research Importance Matthieu and Jo discussed Matthieu's career transition from physiotherapy to research and teaching. Matthieu expressed his initial skepticism towards research, but now appreciates its niche nature. Advantages of Diamond Open Access In the discussion, Jo and Matthieu explore the purpose and benefits of publishing academic research through open access journals. Matthieu highlights that diamond open access journals promote inclusivity and diversity, as they eliminate financial barriers for researchers from less privileged institutions. Jo emphasizes that in the digital era, open access journals can assign persistent identifiers and be indexed in scholarly databases, ensuring wide dissemination of research across linguistic and geographic boundaries. Both agree that now is an opportune time to embrace diamond open access publishing, preprints, and open practices that prioritize equity and accessibility over commercial interests. Multilingualism in Research and Communication Jo and Matthieu discussed the importance of multilingualism in research and communication. Matthieu shared his experiences of conducting interviews and presentations in French, despite most of his research being in English. Both agreed on the need for more inclusive research practices, with a focus on equity, diversity, and inclusion. Dine Roseline Dzekem ( ORCID : 0000-0002-8210-9258 ) created the Review and Curate Club, an open-science and open-access club in Africa, which is operated by an enthusiastic committee. It aims to promote open science by boosting awareness of preprints, scientific processes, prereview, and curation. The Review and Curate Club wrapped up the year 2024 with a webinar titled " Advocating for Preprint Sharing in Rwanda and Africa." The event served as a platform to emphasize the growing importance of preprints in fostering collaboration, accelerating research, and building a stronger Open Science community in Africa. Four guest speakers have been featured with presentations on the key scholarly services for preprint sharing and community-based peer review: Jonny Coates from ASAPbio gave an overview of the African and global preprint landscape; Jo Havemann from Access 2 Perspectives provided an overview of Open Science, Open Access principles, and the opportunity to share preprints via the continental research repository AfricArXiv ; Ogunniyi Tolulope Joseph, from the Review and Curate Club, presented the Needs assessment results “ Promoting Preprint Awareness and Adoption in Africa: A Need-Driven Perspective From the African Region / https://africarxiv.ubuntunet.net/handle/1/1798 ” conducted by the club; and Vanessa Fairhurst from PREreview discussed the services and activities of PREreview, and the value of collaborative peer review. With over 20 years of experience, she has worked at universities like the University of Pretoria and Stellenbosch University, focusing on repositories and journal publishing. She has a Master’s in Computer Integrated Education and has helped implement important projects like UPSpace and SUNScholar. Since 2014, Ina has been the Planning Manager at the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf). She is a DOAJ Ambassador for Southern Africa and led the review of the DOAJ Ambassador Programme in 2024. She also led the African Open Science landscape study and helped create the African Scientists Directory. Anja Harrison , PhD Dipl.-Psych is a Lecturer and Applied Neuroscience Programme lead at King's College London , Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and CEO at The Collaborative Library - an online platform dedicated to bringing scientific knowledge to the masses by providing a space for people to share plain language summaries of research articles. She recently finished her PhD at UC Berkeley in August of 2023. Her dissertation fieldwork and outreach in the high Andes contributed to her interest in making access to scientific careers and scientific findings more equitable. She served as founding chair of the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology’s Translation Working Group, and continues through this group to work on collaborations focused on increasing linguistic diversity in science. She is in charge of the "ADOC Lorraine" data workshop, the support service for research data, as well as the Bibliometrics unit. At the national level, she leads the research data working group of the Couperin consortium. She is also the project leader for the French Open Science Monitor on research data and software codes. Ms Joy Owango is also the project lead at the Africa PID Alliance , an organization whose mission is to secure the future of African Innovation, Indigenous Knowledge and Cultural Heritage. Ms. Owango has a proven history of working in higher education across private, university, and non-governmental sectors. She was a successful higher education practitioner with Clarivate Analytics and has collaborated with the governments of Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Mauritius, Ghana, Senegal, Burkina Faso, among others. Mofahloshi R.M. Chuene is a research scientist specializing in applied chemistry, with a focus on water treatment, nanotechnology, and sustainable energy solutions. She recently completed a Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry at the University of Johannesburg, where her thesis investigated the development and application of sawdust nano-adsorbents for heavy metals remediation and their potential reuse as alternative fuel cell electrocatalysts. She is expected to have the degree conferred in August 2024. Ms. Chuene embarked on her academic journey by obtaining a National Diploma in Biotechnology from the University of Johannesburg in 2007, followed by a Bachelor of Technology in Biotechnology in 2012, and a Master of Technology in Water Care (with distinction) from Tshwane University of Technology in 2019. Her master’s dissertation focused on the disinfection of wastewater using an integrated ozone-nanoparticle system. At the University of Johannesburg, she served as a First-Year Tutor and Laboratory Demonstrator, preparing and supervising laboratory activities while ensuring compliance with safety regulations. Additionally, she made significant contributions to sales and marketing strategies in her role as Head of Sales and Marketing at PureMadi and Dertig Multipurpose Projects, where she drove the distribution of ceramic water filters. She is a member of the Future Earth, Water Institute of Southern Africa (WISA) and Young Water Professionals (YWP-ZA), and a Professional Natural Scientist with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP). Her accolades include recognition as the most valuable contributor and a rising star by the Council for Scientific Industrial Research (CSIR). Ms. Chuene’s contributions to the scientific community are further evidenced by her active participation in numerous conferences and workshops, where she has presented her research and chaired sessions. Notable among these are the Young Water Professional Conference, the South African-Egypt First Joint Researchers’ Workshop, and the Nanos Nanoscience Young Researcher’s Symposium. Her diverse skill set and commitment to advancing scientific knowledge make her an invaluable addition to any research and development team. She currently works for Aphrike Research as a stakeholder relations officer. Maha Said is a post-doctoral researcher on the ERC -funded NanoBubbles project which asks the questions how, when, and why does science fail to correct itself. Originally trained in molecular and cellular biology and working close to science and technology studies especially science integrity, she is currently working in 2 sub-projects, the first being post publication peer review in which articles on the topic of interest are critically analyzed and publicly commented on Pubpeer , and second is the reproducibility project in which research articles that describe the use of nanoparticles for intracellular sensing are examined. Dr. Wendy Patterson is a member of the board of management of the Beilstein-Institut where she serves as scientific director. She received various degrees in the field of physics, culminating in a doctorate degree in optics and then continued post-doctoral research in the areas of nanotechnology and materials for energy conversion and storage in the US and Germany. Concerned with the direction that scholarly publishing had taken and its impact on scholars, she joined the Beilstein-Institut, a charitable foundation, in 2014 to contribute to their diamond open access journals. She is also a board member of Crossref and the Free Journal Network, both non-profit entities providing services for the scholarly community. Wendy joins Jo on this episode to discuss her journey from academia to her current position at the Beilstein-Institut , where she now focuses on improving the scholarly publishing system, promoting open science principles, including supporting open access, open data, and open infrastructure in chemistry. Rania Baleela has been a dedicated Open Science and Open Access trainer since 2012. Rania is the Founder of the first Sudanese institutional repository (OASCIR), a platform for openly sharing research. As the EIFL Open Access Country Coordinator, she has played a key role in advancing open access in Sudan and has trained librarians in this area. Rania is also the Founding Director of the Toxic Organisms Research Centre at the University of Khartoum. Her Ph.D. is in Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine. Rania is deeply committed to promoting transparency and collaboration in research, and her work has had a significant impact on the research community. Dr. Jia Ng, MD MSCE is a Board-certified Nephrologist and Assistant Professor at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/ Northwell, New York. She is also the founder of PublishedMD, where she coaches clinicians on how to publish research papers, build authority, and achieve their academic goals without the overwhelm. Since 2020, she has been giving Academic Writing Workshops and Seminars to Medical Departments that want to increase the scholarly productivity of their students and faculty members. She has been invited to speak at institutions around the US and internationally at King’s College London, UK and Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City - Mayo Clinic, Abu Dhabi. She received her Nephrology Fellowship training and Masters of Science in Clinical Epidemiology from University of Pennsylvania, US. Currently, she is an active clinical researcher, and has received more than $1 Million Dollars of grant funding from the National Institutes of Health and Foundational Grants. Emmanuel Boakye holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana. He is an African Open Science champion who has worked with organizations such as the Center for Open Science in the USA and the Association of African Universities (AAU). He was part of the panel of experts invited by the AAU to plan the 2022 Africa Universities’ Day Celebration, dubbed “Open Science: Bringing Equity to Research and Publishing” where he also presented on the “Global and Continental Perspectives of Open Science”. He currently leads efforts to establish the African Reproducibility Network (AREN), a community-led initiative that seeks to bridge the gaps in open science advocacy and adoption through workshops and the establishment of local communities of practice at universities and research institutes across Africa. Lucia Benkovičová was born in 1986 (in Galanta, Slovakia). She is a graduate in architecture from the Slovak University of Technology and in computer science from the Pan-European University , both in Bratislava, Slovakia. Lucia studied (in national languages) also in Austria, Germany, France, England, and Hungary. Today, Lucia works as a publisher (editing articles, handling book publishing, proofreading and managing). She also evaluates research projects for Horizon Europe and the Slovak Research and Development Agency and lectures on The Security of Public Spaces, Open Access, Artificial Intelligence, and Virtual Reality. She authored many articles and 2 books. Her research focus is crime prevention through environmental design and virtual reality. She has also gained several years of work experience outside academia, especially as a practicing architect (civil engineering) and in IT. Dr. Ana Persic is the Programme Specialist for Science, Technology and Innovation Policies and Open Science at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. She is an ecologist by training with a PhD in Ecotoxicology, and she joined UNESCO in April 2006 in the framework of the UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere program within the Division of Ecological and Earth Sciences in Paris. She has then served as a Science Specialist at the UNESCO Liaison Office in New York from 2011-2018. Her work relates to strengthening the science-policy interface and promoting science, technology, and innovation in implementing the United Nations 2030 agenda for sustainable development and sustainable development goals (SDGs). She coordinated the development of the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science and she’s currently working towards its implementation. During the first year of the pandemic, she served as Community Lead at The COVID Tracking Project at The Atlantic , working with more than 800 volunteers to collect and publish key COVID-19 data. In scholarly records, PIDs can also be assigned to individual researchers (ORCID) and research institutions (ROR). This webinar series aims to facilitate African researchers, librarians, and institutions in the adoption of digital tools and persistent identifiers for a significant increase of African research discoverability, globally and to increase efficiency in scholarly workflows. It guides consumers to discover, select and use these resources with confidence, producers to make their resources more discoverable, more widely adopted and cited, and powers third-party tools by providing trustworthy content to promote standards and databases. This presentation will provide an overview of FAIRsharing and how resource developers can get started describing their databases, standards and policies within FAIRsharing. Examples of what you can do with FAIRsharing will focus on the ORCID Registry record as well as records from the countries within Africa. About Allyson Lister Allyson Lister is the FAIRsharing Content & Community Lead at the University of Oxford. With a background in data standardisation, ontologies, semantic data and integration, she is responsible for FAIRsharing content, as well as for the collaborations with users and outreach across all research domains. She joins Jo on this episode of our podcast to talk about fostering and upholding research rigor as a scholarly publisher. Rebecca was responsible for the launch of F1000Research in 2013 and has subsequently led the initiative behind the launches of many funder- and institution-based publishing platforms partnering with the European Commission, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Wellcome and others, that aim to provide a new trajectory in the way scientific findings and data are communicated. She was a member of the European Commission’s Open Science Policy Platform, chairing their work on next-generation indicators and their summary advice: OSPP-REC, and was Editor of their final report. She was also a member of the US National Academies (NASEM) Committee on Advanced and Automated Workflows. She has been co-Chair of many working groups on data and peer review, including for Research Data Alliance (RDA) and ORCID. She is a Steering Committee member of DORA (San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment) and a Board Member of Open Research Central (ORC). She has worked in STM publishing for over 20 years, is an Associate of the Royal College of Music, qualified as a pharmacist, and holds a PhD in Pharmacology.
