In this episode I speak with Dr. Ryan Emanuel. He is a Lumbee associate professor at North Carolina state in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources. In this episode we discuss the Atlantic Pipeline and the recent decision to cancel its construction on July 7th, 2020. The pipeline began in 2013 under the Obama administration. It was projected to be 600 miles crossing from Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina. The Atlantic pipeline was described as an energy provider and job creator, for the region. Those opposed to the pipeline say its presence would have disrupted the water and eco-system while being a threat to poor, rural, Black and Indigenous communities in the states. The cancellation comes as a big win for the networks who organized against it. Included in this network are Indigenous peoples from the surrounding nations. Dr. Emanuel and I discuss the pipeline’s history, Indigenous people’s resistance, and what the win means for Indigenous people in the region.
