The War and Treaty’s Michael and Tanya Trotter grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and Washington, DC, respectively, but both have family roots in the South. They also grew up in the musical traditions of their churches – Tanya in the Black Baptist Church and Michael in the Seventh Day Adventist Church – where they learned the power of song to move people. After becoming a father at a very young age, Michael eventually joined the armed forces and served in Iraq and Germany, where he took up songwriting as a way of dealing with his experiences there. Meanwhile Tanya embarked on a singing and acting career after a breakthrough appearance in Sister Act 2 alongside Whoopi Goldberg and Lauryn Hill. Now, after a long and sometimes traumatic journey, Michael and Tanya are married, touring, winning all sorts of awards, and set to release their fifth album together, and their fourth as The War and Treaty. Sid talks to Michael and Tanya about the new record, Plus One , as well as their collaboration with Miranda Lambert, what it was like to record at FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, and how they’re blending country, soul, gospel, and R&B. Actress, presenter and author Janet Ellis joins Geoff Bird for a live recording on our Wilderness Tracks podcast. Janet discusses the six pieces of music that connect her to nature. Janet Ellis trained at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Best known for presenting Blue Peter, she stars in numerous radio and TV programmes and in 2018 appeared at the Edinburgh Festival. In 2016 Janet was awarded an MBE for services to charities and theatre. A graduate of the Curtis Brown creative writing course, her debut novel, The Butcher’s Hook, was longlisted for the Desmond Elliott Prize.…

Sharing the inspiration behind her 'Wilderness Tracks', Raynor takes us on a journey through her childhood, into an adulthood peppered with adventure, fulfilment, hardship, and the constant pull of the natural world. Raynor Winn’s first book, The Salt Path, became an international bestseller and sold in twenty countries. It was shortlisted for the 2018 Costa Biography Award; shortlisted for the Wainwright Golden Beer Book Prize 2018 and was the winner of the Royal Society of Literature Christopher Bland Prize 2018. The Wild Silence was shortlisted for the 2021 Indie Book Awards and the 2021 Wainwright Prize. The Salt Path has also been optioned for a film.
