They also bring a wide range of World Music into their performances and original compositions. Ep #168 with Mark Allan Stone, Array Mbira player and composer. Mark plays a new and very unusual instrument - the Array Mbira. It is based on the mbira (kalimba) from Zimbabwe and South Africa but it has been expanded to have 120 tines. You can play in any key and modulate keys freely. The instrument was invented by Fred Wesley and is not yet played by many people. Mark also plays marimba, gyil (balafon) and other African percussion instruments. He is deeply inspired by his Ghananian mentor Bernard Woma who played the gyil and one of his pieces is featured on this episode. Mark teaches a World Music class at a college in Michigan. Ep # 163 with Olox - Neo-Shamanic World Fusion. Olox is a very unusual duo that features Siberian singer Zarina and Armenian-Greek percussionist and singer, Andreas. They had a big breakthrough with an appearance on America’s Got Talent that blew away the audience and judges. Zarina grew up in the Sakha culture where the winters get down to 90 degrees below zero. Spending her youth in nature, imitating birds and animal calls, she also learned the traditional songs of her Sakha culture. Andreas plays percussion, electronics and does deep throat singing that perfectly compliments Zarina’s voice. They wear very striking costumes on stage that have traditional significance.
