What do you get when a group of podiatrists team up with a Barbie doll collector? A research paper published in the journal PLOS ONE that looks into 65 years of Barbie history. The idea started when one of the authors was watching the 2023 Barbie movie. In it, there was a scene when Barbie steps out of her high heels and her feet flatten for the first time. For those of us who grew up with Barbie, we know that her feet used to be in a permanent tip-toe position. The researchers found a Barbie collector and analysed 2750 of their Barbie dolls from her debut in 1959 to June 2024 with a specific tool designed to measure foot posture of the doll. They found that over the decades Barbie has moved from a world of endless stilettos to one where flats are more common, especially when she’s on a job. Just like many women today, Barbie now 'chooses' her shoes based on what she needs to do. If she's skateboarding, working as an astronaut, or heading to a medical shift, it's flats all the way. But when it's time to party, those heels come back out. In the 1960s, all Barbies stood on tip-toes, ready for a night out. But by the 2020s, only 40 percent of Barbies had that high-heel-ready posture. That change aligns with Barbie’s expanding résumé. From being an astronaut in 1965 to a surgeon, Barbie has boldly entered fields once dominated by men. As women gained more workplace rights and opportunities, so did Barbie. In fact, by 2024, 33 percent of Barbies represent real-world jobs. And with that shift came new footwear more functional, more stable, and more diverse. The study found that Barbie’s foot posture reflected more than just job roles. It mirrored broader changes in representation and inclusion. For example, Barbie dolls with prosthetic limbs wore flat shoes to reflect stability, but intriguingly, some dolls in wheelchairs still wore high heels, reminding us that fashion and function can coexist, and that breaking stereotypes isn’t always about ditching glamour. The topic of high heels often comes with warnings - about bunions, knee pain, back problems. But here's the twist: these issues are also common in people who don’t wear heels. And most research into high-heel risks involves people who rarely wear them or wear them during high-impact activities. There’s a lot we don’t know about the long-term effects of regularly wearing high heels. What we do know is this: they slow your walking pace and challenge your balance. But risk varies depending on heel height, shoe design, and individual lifestyle. Ultimately, Barbie reflects us. She's not just a plastic fashionista, she's a cultural mirror. Her shift from stilettos to flats isn’t about turning her back on glamour. It’s about making purposeful choices. Barbie wears heels when she’s feeling fabulous, and sneakers when she’s saving the world. And maybe that’s the real message here: women can and do make thoughtful decisions about their footwear based on comfort, identity, and function. Palak paneer curry Cook time: 10 minutes Prep time: 10 minutes Serves: 6 1kg spinach paste 500gm paneer 1 onion diced finely 2 tbsp sunflower oil 4 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed 1 tsp finely grated ginger 2 finely diced tomatoes (or ½ can chopped tomatoes) 1 tbsp cumin seeds ½ cup cream or coconut cream for dairy free 1 ½ tsp garam masala ¼ tsp turmeric Chilli to taste Salt to taste Start by making the fresh spinach paste. Remove the large stalks from the spinach and drop into a large pot of boiling salted water. Leave for 30 seconds before removing and placing into iced water to stop cooling. Place the spinach into a food processor and blend with a pinch of salt until it turns into a paste. Add a touch of hot blanching water if required. Now make up the Palak Paneer: Heat oil and add cumin seeds, fry till it sizzles and pops. Add chopped garlic and let it fry till raw smell goes and it is light brown. Add onions and fry till light brown, then add ginger and fry till raw smell goes. Add tomatoes and cook it till oil separates. Add salt, chili, turmeric, add spinach paste and cook for 2 mins. They don’t make them like Tom Cruise anymore. As the nature of stardom has changed over the last few decades the idea of the classic movie star has slowly diminished. But the latest and final Mission Impossible film, The Final Reckoning, makes it clear Tom is top of the list of good old-fashioned movie stars still out there. There are several reasons movie stars and stardom aren’t what they once were. The rise of the paparazzi, the internet and social media means we know much more about the people up on screen. Actors struggle to control their image and brand the way they once did - they are no longer untouchable or mysterious. And these days ‘celebrity’ has morphed into something different. Anyone can be elevated to ‘famous’ if they’re prepared to put themselves out there on Insta, Twitch or the 'Tok. The film industry is also less snobby - even A-list film stars do TV now. So over time, we’ve seen the clout of the movie star decline. Don’t get me wrong, a big studio will always want a name - and big names - but that big name no long guarantees a movie will open well at the box office, or make a killing. Look at last year’s The Fall Guy . It featuring two talented, popular actors at the top of their game, Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling, straight off the Barbenheimer train, but didn’t really bother the box office. It struggled to break even. And then there’s the rise of the franchise. Consumers are more loyal to a franchise than an actor these days - and the output from Marvel, DC, Jurassic World, and Final Destination films just keeps on coming. But watching Tom Cruise on Friday night at a preview of his nostalgic and thrilling final Mission Impossible film, reminded me that the man is in a league of his own. It’s taken most of his career for me to like the guy. He was growing on me, but then he lost me when he jumped on Oprah’s couch trying to convince us how much he loved Katie Holmes. But I have always respected him. Not because he does his own stunts, takes traditional filmmaking to its limits, and creates ambitious and wildly entertaining films. Not for his acting ability - although he definitely can act - think Magnolia , Minority Report , Born on the Fourth of July , and A Few Good Men . Nor is it because he can open a film to rave reviews and great box office - the Mission Impossible franchise has made more than $4 billion. The reason I respect him is simply because he’s in it for the love of it. At the beginning of the Mission Impossible preview on Friday night, Tom did a quick piece to camera to thanks us all for being there. This wasn’t a charm offensive. He was quite particular in what he said - he wanted us to enjoy this authentic cinema experience on the big screen the way it is was made to be seen. Since the pandemic, Cruise has been on a mission to get people back into the cinema. Long before Anora director Sean Baker urged viewers to keep seeing films in theatres at the Oscars earlier this year, Tom Cruise has literally been putting his life on the line convincing us that there is nowhere more magical to watch a film than in the theatre. They meet up again when Juliet travels from her home in Auckland for Rory’s funeral, and find they need to reconcile the realities of love, betrayal and the limits of forgiveness. Autumn veggie soup with lemon garlic bread Cook time: 30 minutes Prep time: 15 Serves: 6 2 tbsp sunflower oil 1 medium onion, chopped 4 cloves garlic, peeled and smashed 3 carrots, peeled and diced 1 cup chopped celery 4 bay leaves 400gm can whole peeled tomatoes 400gm can cannellini beans, drained 1 ltr water & 1 stock cube ½ tsp toasted fennel seeds 5 large spinach leaves, destalked and roughly chopped 1/2 cup kalamata olives Old parmesan rind if you have one Lemon garlic bread 6 ciabatta rolls 150 gm unsalted butter 4 tbsp chopped parsley 3 cloves garlic, crushed Zest and juice of one small lemon Flaky salt and pepper Heat the oil in a large soup pot or casserole. Add chopped onion and garlic and sauté until translucent. Add carrot, celery and bay leaves. Continues to sauté for another minute before adding in the tomatoes, drained beans, fennel seeds, water, stock cube and Parmesan rind. Simmer for 20 minutes before adding olives when you want to serve. Super fast and really easy. Whilst your waiting, make up the butter. Turn the oven on to 180*c Combine the soft butter to the rest of the ingredient and season with flaky salt and pepper. Make a couple of cuts in the top of the rolls and fill with butter. You can choose to wrap the rolls in tin foil or simply place onto a baking tray and bake for 10 minutes Serve soup with warmed lemon garlic rolls. Research from the journal Injury Prevention shows that a pedestrian or cyclist is 44 percent more likely to be fatally injured if they are hit by an SUV or light truck (LTV), compared with smaller passenger cars. Between the shortage of qualified professionals, long delays and high costs, plenty of New Zealanders aren't getting the help they need. oVRcome specialises in VR Exposure Therapy - and the start-up is expected to showcase the technology at Melbourne’s Digital Health Festival. oVRcome founder Adam Hutchinson says the company is focused around delivering exposure therapy through VR technology. "We deliver virtual reality exposure therapy - it sort of tricks the brain into thinking that you're actually in that environment. Experts have voiced support for Labour's new bill requiring more reporting around tobacco lobbying - and there's growing calls for more transparency. Reports also indicate alcohol lobbyists have been given input into health policies. Transparency International New Zealand chair Anne Tolley says there needs to be more regulation and transparency around lobbying - so Kiwis can see who's involved. "The problem is, we don't know who's talking to whom, how often, and what the results are. That's why we're asking for a register of lobbyists, much more transparency about who's talking to whom and how often - and then what the outcomes are." Francesca Rudkin: There's a new horror movie out - in the form of Trump tariffs 4:12

This week, a new disaster movie was announced. There isn’t a script yet, because no one knows how it’s going to end - and when it was announced, no one knew how to react. If there was ever a global WTF moment in film, it was Trump’s announcement of a 100 percent tariff on films coming into the US which have been produced in foreign lands. As is often the case with President Trump, he asks a good question but comes up with the wrong answer. It’s totally reasonable to look at how California can rebuild its entertainment industry. According to the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, around 18,000 full time jobs have been lost over the last three years, mostly in California. So, yes, sure, look at how to maintain production and jobs in the US - but in a way which will actually benefit the entertainment business. No one sees the tariff on films made overseas as the answer to their problems. Many US studios make films overseas. The industry was advocating for tax incentives and subsidies and all the other normal things countries, including New Zealand, have done to help their film industries. But throwing out a declaration on social media without further explanation isn’t the way to convince an industry you have their best interests at heart. Share prices for Netflix, Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount and Comcast fell after President Trump’s announcement. And what does this proposal even mean? Is Trump talking about independent, foreign language films? Or large-scale studio films made overseas? And what if you produce the film from the States - say you write the script, pre-produced and post produce the film in the US, but take advantage of another country’s tax incentives to shoot there? Is that a film made in a foreign land? What about a US produced film that uses Weta FX in NZ to create award winning visual effects - will it have to foot the tariff bill? What does this mean for streaming services? It's thought about 75 percent of Netflix content is made outside the US. Will TV shows be included? It’s a minefield and it has thrown Hollywood into chaos. Films do not get made in a hurry, they are scheduled and planned years in advance. This is close to a writer’s strike - in that Hollywood is being forced to take a breath and pause non-committed work, and it will take some time to get things started again. It’s not just Hollywood who has been thrown, film industries around the world are in collective shock. In the UK, where new instalments of Marvel’s Avengers and Spider-Man are set to shoot in London, the news was met with disbelief. Succession star Brian Cox called it “an absolute disaster”, and with a related workforce of around 200,000, many freelancers could find themselves jobless. New Zealand could suffer the same fate. Our industry has been bolstered recently by international productions, such as Chief of War, Minecraft and Brad Pitt’s Heart of the Beast. We have an incredible industry here driven by a world-class crew who rely on these international projects. At the beginning of the year, Studio West in Auckland completed construction of its fifth sound stage, and Auckland Film Studios is also adding new stages - all so they can accommodate bigger international projects. The industry will be holding its breath that it can find a way to fill this new capacity. New Zealand's film sector generates NZ$3.5 billion annually, with around one third of revenue generated from the United States. So, yeah, what Brian Cox said - this could be a disaster. But we're grown ups - so keep calm and carry on seems to be the public response so far, but behind the scenes there is no doubt at least mild panic. Finding a way to convince Trump there are other approaches to Make Hollywood Great Again will be at the forefront of industry leaders' minds right now - let’s hope they do.
