If you’re a leader concerned about losing your best talent in the highly competitive post-covid job market, you need to listen in! Today’s guest is a woman after my own heart with bold and humorous book titles such as Help them Grow or Watch them GO, Up is Not the Only Way, and Love ‘Em or Lose ‘Em: Getting Good People to Stay! Dr. Beverly Kaye is an internationally recognized authority on talent development and employee retention, and I’ve wanted to interview her since I first saw her speak at a conference nearly ten years ago! In fact, Bev was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Association for Talent Development (ATD) in 2018 and the Institute for Management Studies (IMS) in 2019. On this episode, we trace her passion for career development, starting from her days as a college administrator and dean where she observed, in her words, “A students at A schools thinking there will be an A line I stand in and I will have an A life…(but they had) no contingency plan.” For a culture of development to work, companies need individuals with spark, managers who actively support, and effective org systems and structures. One non-negotiable way for LeaderShifters to support their top performers is having “stay interviews,” a term actually coined by Bev that has gained lots of traction as a proactive way to have fewer exit interviews! She also has sage advice for people feeling stuck in their careers to consider a wide range of mobility options, or be “opportunity minded instead of opportunity blinded.”
