In a nation with as much ancient winemaking history as Italy’s it’s a challenge to find an under-the-radar region, but the wines of the Marche in Central Italy may just be the country’s best-kept secret. The region sits in the center of the country, skirting its eastern edge and bordering the Adriatic Sea. With ideal exposure to the sun and the cooling influences of the Apennine Mountains, this area has a historical predilection to red grape varietals. It is rich with such native varietals as Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Passerina and Pecorino.
Our red blend comes from vineyards situated high in the hills of the southern Marche overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Our grower’s co-op was established in 1969 by a group of 150 farmers that were tired of accepting the oppressive conditions of the local private wine firms that bought their grapes. Since then the winery has grown in size and talent and today numbers upwards of 300 members.
We were fortunate to be able to work with smaller lots of Montepulciano and Cabernet Sauvignon that had been set aside from regular production due to longer maceration - approaching three weeks with the skins. This additional maceration time delivered even more complexity and nuance to our final blend, yielding a wine of fine structure, balance and mouthfeel.
