This time of year your email inbox gets filled with invoices, receipts, and shipping notifications more than any other time. Because of that, you are much more likely to receive SPAM and other bogus emails that are 'phishing' you to click on links and provide information to inappropriate actors. " Phishing is the activity of defrauding an online account holder of financial information by posing as a legitimate company." You should always be paying attention to links and attachments in any email you click on but especially around this time of year. Since you are expecting many packages and spending much more money, it is probable you will be much more likely to fall victim to malicious links or attachments in holiday season phishing attempts. In this quick episode, we discuss a few quick tips on avoiding falling for the scams that will get you sharing too much information to the wrong people. Travel can be stressful. There are hundreds of apps you could use to manage agendas, trip itineraries, and sight-seeing plans. I just spent the week in Las Vegas at AWS re:Invent (more on that later) and I used 5 apps to keep my trip organized and know where I needed to go and what I should be doing for nightlife. The 5 apps I briefly discuss are: Google Maps (Directions) Google Trips (Ticketing, Reservations, and Planning) Credntia (Identification, Rewards, Credit Cards) TickTick (Checklist, Organization) Social Location Apps (Activities, Dining, Attractions) Foursquare Swarm Yelp Trip Advisor Google Local There are many more tools for keeping all of your travel plans organized but I find these 5 to be the best 5 by far. Video is getting it's second wind. 'Is getting' is already a little past-tense but Snapchat (or Snap Inc.) is taking it to a new level and they are doing what Google failed to do. And that is make wearable technology cool and fashionable. I don't even have my hands on them yet and I am ridiculously impresses with the feedback and press Snapchat's Spectacles are getting. I cannot wait to get a pair of my own. It is hard to tell what I would actually use them for but I think that is the point. Getting short 10 second clips of some of the most candid moments quickly and easily opens the door for many opportunities. Please keep posted as we find a way to get a pair quickly and affordably. Imagine for a moment your computer never getting a virus or bogus software installed. Imagine buying a brand new computer on Black Friday or Cyber Monday and 5 years from now it running almost as good as the day you bought it. Sounds lofty right? Well, it is possible. It is possible to run your computer, keep it secure, and never get a virus without ever needing to buy Anti-Virus software. I still recommend running some form of protection but you should never have to pay for it on your home computer. The free stuff works just fine with this solution in place. In this week's episode, I talk about THE ONE THING you can do this weekend to make your computer more secure for your entire family. No one thing will keep you 100% safe but this is hands-down the biggest step you can take for being safe and secure on your computer(s).
