Less than a year and a half after Superman III had a watery reception, to say the least, the Man of Steel had to move over for his younger cousin, Supergirl. Instead of debuting in Superman's third outing, the Salkinds made her own film featuring Oscar-winning stars such as Peter O'Toole and Faye Dunaway. They also chose to have her fight a wannabe occultist instead of a comic book-style villain. Needless to say, this wasn't a winning formula, and the film bombed at the box office and received abysmal reviews causing Supergirl to go dark for 20 years.
