Uncool at any Speed: The Chevy Corvair
Manage episode 445964036 series 3577351
What Were They Thinking?
The marketers at Chevy take one look at the youthful popularity of the Volkswagen Beetle and decide to emulate key features of that novel little auto: its compact size, air-cooled rear engine, and scaled-down transaxle, among others—in designing the company’s first “American-sized compact”: the Corvair.
With more than 250,000 units sold in its first year, Corvair sales continue to accelerate into the mid-1960s—until the power of the pen suddenly causes the car’s popularity to hit the skids and crash. Listen and learn all about it in this episode.
